War, a term that seemed like a relic from centuries past to the people of the kingdom, had begun to cast a heavy shadow over even the lowest-ranking workers. This atmosphere was particularly palpable among the port's inhabitants, as massive warships had already been launched, their cannons radiating an ominous energy that made it clear these were not mere decorations but lethal weapons capable of inflicting real harm.
At the same time, the kingdom had commenced preparations for war. Weapons and soldiers were being continuously transported to the shores and coastal cities, as if the entire nation had suddenly entered a state of readiness for battle.
The Guild also began to introduce the underground shelters they had excavated, or perhaps they could be better described as makeshift refuges. They provided ordinary citizens with safety training and knowledge on how to survive during wartime, making everyone acutely aware of the impending conflict.
Not only the Guild but various other guilds also started mobilizing. Each guild's Mages were increasingly reluctant to take on long-distance missions. As a result, some guilds faced financial difficulties due to a lack of assignments, while others found themselves trapped by monsters without Mages to assist them.
However, all these issues were resolved by Newton's Guild. Short on funds? Newton simply withdrew money from the Guild's treasury. In need of manpower? Newton dispatched robots to help out. This time, the Guild had indeed spent a significant amount.
Yet in reality, the Guild did not suffer much loss because even with this influx of cash, its members would still purchase potions and magical machinery, meaning most of that money would ultimately flow back into the Guild. Thus, while profits might decrease slightly, they were not at a loss; in fact, due to the war, sales increased significantly, creating a sense of thin margins but high volume.
"Val, shall we give them a taste of our firepower?"
As everyone prepared for what was to come, the fleet of the Albarez Empire finally arrived.
In the sky and across the sea, warships seemed to blanket the horizon.
"Val, let's fire a shot!"
A cruel smile spread across Agil's face.
"With your strength, it should be easy for you to hit them from here."
"Of course, but why should I do that?"
Val's tone and behavior were somewhat unexpected for the Holy Twelve Shields.
"Val, what do you mean by that?"
Augustus furrowed his brow, sensing that something was off.
"Nothing, nothing at all."
Val smiled and waved his hand, and then a massive cannon appeared.
"Then let me start with a little greeting."
An attack comparable to the Magic Cannon exploded right next to Fairy Tail's Guild.
"Oh?"
Newton stood on the roof of the Guild, with Mavis beside him.
"President, the war has begun."
"Yes, so you should head to the front lines. I can handle things here."
Mavis was filled with confidence.
"Alright, then I'll leave it to you."
Newton smirked, and then armor enveloped him, his voice resonating with a metallic tone.
"Let's return the favor, shall we?"
With a snap of his fingers, countless suits of armor and large robots suddenly lifted off the ground, revealing themselves from beneath the surface. Each mech was equipped with a cannon.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I enjoy war."
As his words echoed, the magical cannons on the ground and the missiles on the Magic Cannon and Mech Armor formed a terrifying barrage in the sky.
"Ah, it seems they are ready for war as well," Val remarked, watching the incoming artillery without a hint of fear or hesitation.
"Damn it, are they really preparing to engage us?" Augustus immediately grew furious.
"All forces, advance! Flatten this place! Let it become part of our empire's territory!"
A powerful magical force conjured a protective shield in front of him, while the remaining Holy Twelve Shields utilized their own methods to safeguard their surrounding fleets.
"Not bad, but is this really wise? You know what happens if a ship explodes at this moment?"
Val's words sounded like a curse from hell. Suddenly, every ship began to explode, sending Albarez Empire soldiers into a panic.
“Val! Have you betrayed the Empire?”
Augustus charged towards Val.
“Betrayal? No, please call me Jiang now, an assistant to Mr. Newton.”
Val bowed gracefully, only to be shattered by Augustus. The main objective this time was to destroy the power systems of all the ships. Even the Holy Twelve Shields could not protect every vessel. Those capable of using time magic could restore their ships, but those relying on sand magic were rendered useless. Erin managed to make some repairs through supplementary magic, but many others could not protect all the ships.
Just like that, a third of the entire Albarez Empire fleet vanished in an instant. Even for those that remained, most of the Albarez Empire's ships had been adjusted by Val. All sorts of backdoors and weaknesses had already been inputted into the armor by Newton.
Even if the performance was similar, Newton's armor could easily take down a ship. This meant that the gap in military strength between both sides was not significant; the main issue lay in the disparity of high-end combat power.
In long-range exchanges, the Albarez Empire suffered a complete defeat, being shot down mercilessly and experiencing internal explosions. With one Val eliminated, the first battle of the Albarez Empire's invasion ended in failure.
“Was it that guy Newton who caused this?”
Jelf's expression remained unchanged. Having grasped the general course of the battle, he understood who was behind it all. Those armors were peculiar; Jelf had encountered them before, and while many could serve as cages, as long as one wasn't trapped and their magic power drained, there would be no problem. As for weapons, facing the Holy Twelve Shields was simply laughable.
However, the consequences of this battle far exceeded Jelf's expectations. Perhaps Jelf himself was not a strategic thinker; what seemed like a mere defeat this time was significant because most of the equipment and potions prepared by Val for the Empire were now unusable due to his betrayal. Moreover, communications were similarly affected; while there might not have been immediate issues here, communication with the Empire’s interior was completely severed. Without logistics, potions, or ammunition—this was the crux of the matter.
