Although the matter of the Dark Magic Cult had garnered significant attention, it was still something that didn't concern the average person much. What ordinary folks were more focused on was the annual event that had become a tradition—the Great Magic Games—was starting once again.
However, since most of the Regular Guilds were participating in the mission against the Dark Magic Cult, the competitors this time were mostly newcomers or emerging guilds. Familiar names like Fairy Tail, Azure Wind Antelope, and Sword-Biting Tiger were notably absent from this competition. In the end, an obscure guild emerged victorious, drawing considerable attention for their unexpected win.
Newton, however, was not particularly interested in these events. There was one piece of news that caught his attention: at the very end of the Great Magic Games, a figure appeared at the venue. This person seemed to be using fire-based magic and was accompanied by a cat. Well, that could only be Natsu.
While members of Fairy Tail were out training, everyone—Laxus included—would keep in touch with Newton. Yet Natsu seemed to have completely fallen off the radar; no one had encountered him. Occasionally, there would be reports of something being burned down, leading to speculation that it might be Natsu's doing. Sometimes Newton even wondered if Natsu was truly Kildas's child. Although he knew Natsu was End and that this was impossible, Kildas had also been away from home for long periods, and Natsu's behavior mirrored his in many ways.
Natsu's appearance this time reassured Newton and others. After all, with Natsu's strength, he shouldn't get into any serious trouble. However, not having news about him for so long had been quite unsettling. It didn't matter if he participated in this mission; knowing he was safe was enough.
But it was clear that Natsu wouldn't let things end so simply. As if to announce his return to the world, Natsu used flames to write "I am back" on the walls of the king's palace. This surprised Newton even more. In the past, while Natsu had shown some ability to change the properties of fire, he rarely applied it in such a manner. This time, it was evident that his flames caused little damage to the palace; they merely adhered to the walls like slime without leaving a trace of charring. This indicated that Natsu's control over fire had become somewhat frightening. Wasn't he supposed to be Natsu? After experiencing several major battles, it felt as if he had integrated everything learned over the past year into his abilities; all previous experiences had transformed into fuel for Natsu's growth. Newton found himself unable to accurately gauge Natsu's strength anymore.
"Look at this..."
Newton casually handed over the newspaper to Miraj and called Erza, who was training nearby, to come over as well. Both approached curiously and saw the report about Natsu, smiles spreading across their faces.
"That guy finally decided to let us know he's alive? I thought he might have died somewhere."
A hint of battle spirit flickered in Erza's eyes.
"I wonder what level he has reached now?"
"When he comes back, why don't you just test your strength against him?"
Miraj had no intention of holding back; instead, she felt a surge of excitement.
In reality, although it seemed that these two had done nothing in the Guild over the past year, their strength had undeniably increased. All the demons from the Underworld Gate had been absorbed by Miraj, and she could skillfully wield various spells. If it weren't for her insufficient magical power, Miraj could single-handedly rival an entire Underworld Gate. Erza was in a similar situation; Newton had crafted countless armors for her over the year. Many might remember the Emerald Dragon that Newton had revived. Although a year wasn't enough for it to fully recover, through occasional exchanges, Newton gained a wealth of knowledge about armor forging from four hundred years ago. Due to its soul's condition, the dragon's body was gradually transforming into that of its kin. To test this transformation process, Newton frequently extracted materials from the dragon's body. Such extractions inevitably consumed resources, but using these resources to create several sets of armor for Erza was certainly feasible.
As for Newton himself, his progress was substantial as well. The two key elements of Alchemy were the Philosopher's Stone and Panacea. The Philosopher's Stone was no longer a challenge for Newton; he believed that during this upcoming expedition, he would acquire a significant amount of it. Thus, most of his time over the past year had been devoted to researching Panacea. Previously, he had discussed relevant medicines with Poluchika, but Poluchika had scolded him harshly back then. No medicine could completely cure all ailments in this world; the logic behind targeted treatments simply didn't hold for Panacea. However, Newton approached the issue from the perspectives of life and soul rather than just medicine and disease.
In fact, Alchemy wasn't merely about creating something; it was a means to explore the essence of things. Just as no one studies molecules or material structures in magic, Alchemy required such study. Newton elevated this foundation to another level: life and soul couldn't be explained through molecules alone. However, if life force combined with a resentful soul could produce a Philosopher's Stone, then it was clear that both could be materialized. What could pure life force yield? Or what could a pure soul produce? Or what could be created by combining life force with other souls devoid of resentment?
Of course, Newton wasn't a murderer; conducting experiments on human bodies was inherently inhumane. He could only utilize pure life force for his experiments. The results were promising: through a complex process, refining pure life force could indeed create an item that healed injuries. It couldn't be classified as a potion since most appeared in the form of crystals. However, this item wouldn't kill bacteria or viruses; instead, it would directly enhance the life force of the individual consuming it—similar to how games replenish health points—but it couldn't eliminate abnormal statuses. While this could save lives, it still fell short of being called Panacea.
Then Natsu's arrival seemed to signal something; all members of Fairy Tail outside began to spring into action.
