Everyone rushed over at their fastest pace, but some still arrived a moment too late. For instance, the group consisting of Gajeel and Gray found nothing but emptiness; some residences were completely destroyed, while others showed no signs of disturbance, merely devoid of people. It was likely that many had fallen victim to assassination.
Newton couldn't be of much help here either, so he made his way to Poluchika's location, hoping to assist in treating Laxus.
"How is Laxus doing?"
Newton looked at Laxus lying on the bed. Since he had been brought back, Laxus had remained in a state of unconsciousness, as if he had returned to the time when his health was poor. Back then, Laxus was weak but had inherited Makarov's immense magical power. The result was that his body often couldn't withstand such overwhelming magic, leading him to come here frequently. It wasn't until the Magic Crystal was embedded within him that Laxus's condition improved, and he gained the terrifying power of Dragon Slayer Magic, which began to enhance his strength. Now, however, Laxus lay on the hospital bed, appearing as frail as he once was.
"It's bad. The other members of the Thunder God Clan had only inhaled a small amount of Demon Particles, so we managed to remove a significant portion through surgery. Their lives are no longer in danger. But Laxus? His lungs are practically filled with Demon Particles; he relies on a respirator just to breathe. Although we can continue to surgically extract the Demon Particles from his body, it will take a long time."
Jiang found dealing with the Demon Particles quite troublesome. There were alternatives, such as directly replacing Laxus's organs—removing his lung filled with Demon Particles and replacing it with another person's or even an artificial one. This would simplify things considerably. However, organ matching could be complicated, and there was also the question of whether Laxus would accept having his body altered.
"Then let's take it slow. After all, this time it's about avenging Laxus; what kind of situation is it if the victim goes after revenge themselves?"
Newton shook his head.
"Can we prevent this kind of situation? If someone uses Demon Particles to attack us again next time, will we have an effective way to defend ourselves?"
"Well," Jiang replied thoughtfully, "Demon Particles spread through the air. So what we probably need is... an air purifier?"
At this point, Jiang felt a bit uncertain about his suggestion because it seemed rather far-fetched.
"If it works, that would be great," Newton said nonchalantly. "It may sound ridiculous, but if it proves effective, I wouldn't mind."
Newton didn't care much; once you accepted such things, they didn't seem so strange anymore—in fact, they could even feel quite exhilarating.
"However, can't we create something like masks? If that's possible, wouldn't it make things a bit easier for us?"
After all, an air purifier was meant for large areas and was not quite the same concept as a mask.
"Well, I will consider it."
Jiang nodded. This was the only way things could be for now. Although some of the original council members had been dealt with, there were still others who had not been assassinated, and Natsu was one of them.
"Sir, we've encountered enemies at Natsu's location. Should we broadcast the situation live?"
Although Jiang was asking, he had already pulled out a screen. The view was quite low, likely from Haru, and aside from that scarf, everything else on Natsu seemed to have been damaged multiple times. It was a waste to provide Natsu with armor, especially since Haru was relatively safe; thus, the main focus was on Haru.
The scene appeared calm for now. Natsu was straightforward and immediately revealed everything he knew. The Speaker he was protecting had fallen silent, remaining composed. Naturally, the camera captured more than just Haru. Wendy, Sharlulu, and Lucy were also present, observing their surroundings. Newton noticed that this Speaker did not live alone; there was also a granddaughter.
"Wendy, you might need to protect that girl soon. The enemy is likely to take her hostage."
Wendy nodded, while Sharlulu expressed her annoyance.
"You don't need to tell me that; I've already noticed it. And you don't need to direct Wendy!"
Just as Newton prepared to tease Sharlulu further, an explosion occurred, causing the screen to shake violently.
"The enemy is coming!"
Natsu rushed out without hesitation.
"Wait a moment."
The others did not immediately follow. Wendy looked worried.
"Is it safe to let Mr. Natsu go out alone?"
"Don't worry. I suspect that Natsu's body has already started transforming into a dragon. With that kind of body, even if injured, I've never seen Natsu rest for a week."
Lucy had the most say in the matter, as Natsu often stayed over at her dorm. After every battle, whether it was a celebration or a time for recovery, she would occasionally catch glimpses of Natsu or Gray, and sometimes even others, in her bathroom. At times, Lucy wondered if her home had turned into a public dormitory.
"Alright, Haru, you go out first and see who that demon really is."
Haru immediately flew outside. Newton also noticed it was a demon resembling a leopard, and with each of its attacks, there were violent explosions.
"It seems to be that one called Wolf. Newton, what should we do?"
Even Haru, as an external thought process for Natsu and aided by armor, quickly recognized the attacker from the Underworld Gate.
"Um, you and Sharlulu should keep your distance. That guy can turn objects into bombs upon contact. If you want to approach him, then don’t wear armor and just dodge whatever he throws."
Haru swiftly flew outside while Wendy and Sharlulu stayed behind to protect the Former Speaker. Lucy rushed out as well, summoning Scorpio the moment she stepped outside. However, the sand Scorpio conjured was easily blocked by the shockwave from Wolf's explosions. Fortunately, because it was an explosion, the flames were quickly consumed by Natsu. But due to the nature of the explosion, while the flames were manageable, the shockwaves left Natsu battered and bruised.
Overall, though, the battle was still going well; few could match Natsu's reckless charge in close combat.
"It seems like there’s no problem now."
But things can change in an instant...
