“What is going on?”
Makarov slammed his hand on the table, where a newspaper lay open. The front page featured a photo of Newton, with headlines reading:
“Shock! The Mysterious Boss of the Guild Brings Such Disaster to the Kingdom!”
Or perhaps it said:
“Wonder! The Famous Mage You Don’t Know!”
However, the content was not as eye-catching as the headlines suggested. It contained rather mundane information, such as details about the Great Magic Games and the incident involving ten thousand dragons. Notably absent were any mentions of the Dark Guild or Witch's Sin. Although this omission nearly caused an uproar within the Magic Council, the various guilds and the kingdom's influence forced the Council to reconsider their approach; they had to think twice about pushing too hard lest something go awry. What the Magic Council failed to realize was that their standing had already diminished significantly among the Magic Guilds. While they maintained some authority over the guilds in public, recent events like the Paradise Tower incident and Fairy Tail's Wolf Island Incident had solidified their reputation for ineffectiveness. Even though the Magic Council showed up this time, their presence proved to be of little consequence, leading to an awkward situation. When they were needed, they did nothing; now that things had calmed down, they appeared out of nowhere—who would take them seriously?
The Magic Guilds were already displeased with the Council, which seemed orderly on the surface but was actually quite disorganized behind closed doors. The kingdom also sought to isolate the Magic Council; after all, no one liked sharing power with an entity that could rival them. As a result, the Magic Council became a target of public ire. If they had any confidence left, it was likely that Newton would not be taking the blame in this newspaper article; it would have been someone from the Magic Council instead.
Fortunately for Newton, he had considered this matter carefully. While it might be satisfying to let the Magic Council take the fall—and there were many benefits to doing so—the potential downsides seemed far greater. No matter how corrupt they were, this group still wielded considerable power. They had once unleashed Spirit Magic Power equivalent to billions of magical units just to destroy Paradise Tower. According to Gerard, it seemed that the Magic Council possessed even more such capabilities, which was terrifying. This realization strengthened Newton's resolve: the Magic Council could not be allowed to remain intact. It was akin to letting a child hold a nuclear launch button. Although the Council members were not children, anyone could infiltrate and potentially destroy them all; what if someone managed to sneak in and steal all their weapons? But it wasn’t time for action just yet.
While Newton was deep in thought about these matters, another issue loomed larger—Makarov was nearing a boiling point.
“I told you not to do this! I warned you! With us old-timers around, you… you little brat…”
Makarov sighed heavily and expressed his frustration.
“Are you trying to give me a heart attack so you can inherit my position as President?”
"Calm down, calm down."
Newton smiled awkwardly. He knew exactly what the old man was thinking, but precisely because he knew, he couldn't let this elder take the blame. After all, the old man had already lived a wild life; it was better for someone of his generation to handle such matters rather than tarnishing his later years.
"Old man, you're still quite spry. Don't worry, you have many years ahead of you. And if you're still concerned, just know that Natsu will have plenty to worry about later. If you think that won't be enough to keep you on your toes, I can always find some more troublemakers for you."
Newton's words nearly drove Makarov to the brink of fury. What did he mean by saying he still had years left? And finding more troublemakers? Was he really just meant to take the heat for these kids? It was infuriating! Although Makarov understood that Newton meant well, as a parent, he wanted nothing more than to protect his children. Now being cared for instead left him with a sense of loss, as if his child had finally grown up. That feeling was what Makarov found hardest to accept.
But what could he do? The reality had already unfolded; even if Makarov wanted to change things, it was too late. Moreover, in this regard, Makarov wasn't as shrewd as Newton. He couldn't be sure that his plans would come to fruition as he envisioned. What if Newton used him again? If things went awry, it would be even more embarrassing.
"Forget it, forget it. You rascal, you'll drive me to an early grave one day."
Makarov sighed and then suddenly thought of something.
"You haven't told Natsu and the others about this, have you?"
"Of course not! How could I possibly keep something like this a secret?"
Newton shook his head. Although Natsu wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, he wasn't stupid either; he just had a unique way of thinking. While it was true that Natsu rarely read newspapers, that didn't mean he lacked other sources of information. After all, that guy had an uncanny ability to hear everything; nothing could escape his ears. If Natsu found out about this from someone else, who knew what kind of chaos he might stir up? It was better to tell Natsu directly now and avoid unnecessary trouble.
In fact, it wasn't just Natsu; even though others didn't believe Newton would take the blame willingly, he still felt the need to explain himself to prevent any unexpected incidents.
As it turned out, explaining was indeed wise. Although many people knew that Newton had volunteered to take the blame, the anger of ordinary citizens was still directed at him. Just two days after the news broke, their guild in the capital was vandalized. Not only that, but the storm only intensified; other cities that hadn't suffered any damage were now accusing their guilds of producing counterfeit goods and artificially inflating prices or monopolizing trade. This made it seem as if every commoner had risen up overnight against their guilds, which faced varying degrees of backlash. Not only the guilds but Fairy Tail also felt the repercussions. Every mission and every outing became a source of scrutiny for Fairy Tail, making them acutely aware of what it felt like to be publicly scorned.
"Sir, are we not going to take action now?"
Jiang looked at the information in his hands. All this momentum was orchestrated by Newton intentionally. Newton had indeed taken the blame upon himself, hoping that others would owe him a favor in return. However, he also contemplated what would happen if he fell from grace. Despite how glorious the Guild appeared, Newton knew that such immense benefits could not fail to tempt others. If there were any conflicts in business, things would only escalate further. This time presented an opportunity for the Guild to eliminate all its rivals.
"Let me see who has stepped forward."
Newton took the document from Jiang's hands and began to flip through it. There were names of prominent families, famous merchants, and well-known philanthropists. It seemed that men and women from every profession held a grudge against the Guild.
"Wow, so many people want me dead..."
A cold smile appeared on Newton's face.
"Alright then, let's get started..."
With those words from Newton, the terrifying purge began.
