“Natsu…”
Newton approached Natsu with a smirk that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Ahahaha, I’m the strongest! Newton, I’ve solved—”
Before Natsu could finish his sentence, Newton pushed him, sending him tumbling into a cart. It may have just been a cart, but it was more than Natsu could handle, and he collapsed in a heap.
“I… ugh…”
Natsu’s face turned a sickly shade of purple, his cheeks puffed out as if he were about to vomit.
At that moment, Ginger walked over and immediately recognized that Natsu had likely angered their boss.
“Sir?”
“Set a timer. Take this guy for a stroll around the city. Don’t come back for at least an hour.”
Newton’s words were cold and unyielding towards Natsu, causing the latter’s expression to change dramatically.
“Newton, you can’t treat me like this! If you have the guts, let’s duel… ugh!”
Natsu’s protest was cut short as Ginger wheeled him away in the cart. However, Ginger was clad in armor while remaining behind.
“How’s the war damage?”
War can bring wealth, but it comes at the cost of countless lives. Even Newton couldn’t escape this reality; it was better to prepare mentally than to face the consequences later.
“It’s severe. The mages not on the front lines are dealing with destroyed homes and ordinary civilians affected by the fighting, along with other property losses. This time…”
Ginger shook his head at this point, and Newton fell silent.
“What about the mages?”
“There are only a few guilds involved on the mage side, but when you factor in the participants along with those you invited and the Dark Guilds that came to observe, all of them are fighting on the front lines. So casualties…”
Newton sighed helplessly.
"I was the one who brought them here."
"You’re not planning to apologize or something, are you? If that’s the case, I would absolutely look down on you."
Jiang looked at Newton, and he wasn't wrong in thinking that. Newton knew there would be danger, yet he still allowed them to come, so it was reasonable to say that he was responsible for their deaths.
"Don't worry, I'm not that dramatic. Since I've made my choice, I won't regret it. The most important thing now is how to compensate for their losses."
Newton shook his head. The pain brought by war couldn't simply be remedied; it mainly relied on time to heal those wounds.
"Let's calculate how we can at least ensure compensation for their material losses. As for the emotional scars, there's nothing we can do about that. We should raid the Dark Guild and plunder the entire royal capital; that should suffice."
"Sir, shouldn't we use this as a condition to legitimize the Dark Guild?"
Jiang was curious. Logically speaking, given all that the Dark Guild had done, it should be easy for them to legitimize themselves or clear their name. However, Newton seemed to have no intention of doing so.
"No, the Dark Guild only has meaning in the shadows. They can accomplish many things that Regular Guilds cannot. If they were to step into the light, they would only find themselves constrained."
However, there would inevitably be those who wished to legitimize themselves, just like Song Jiang back in the day who longed for amnesty. Ultimately, a villain is still a villain; no one can remain a villain forever, so Newton understood those who wanted to change.
"Of course, if anyone wants to leave, tell them they can go. However, to prevent our secrets from leaking, we will take certain necessary measures. I hope they can understand."
Just like with Regular Guilds, joining might be simple, but leaving is another matter entirely. Even Fairy Tail has set three rules regarding departures; other guilds have even stricter conditions. After all, once someone joins a guild, they gain considerable insight into its workings. If any internal information were to leak out, it could lead to serious consequences.
"No problem. What about Witch's Sin?"
In this battle, Witch's Sin played a significant role; everyone inside was powerful. With Ultia's Arc of Time saving countless lives, even ordinary members of Regular Guilds now faced these notorious leaders of the Dark Guilds—each one once a wanted criminal—who had now become their allies and even saved their lives. They all had to think about how to face these individuals. Moreover, many from their guild had previously died at the hands of this opposing guild; thus there were both grudges and debts involved, which complicated matters further. Past sins couldn't simply be erased by good deeds.
The most critical factor remained the Magic Council. Let's not forget that it was due to Gerard's actions that the Magic Council was destroyed back then; they genuinely wanted to capture him. Especially with so many dangerous individuals nearby, the Magic Council had to consider the context of saving lives as well.
What made things more troublesome was that since this was during a battle, there was no need for excessive deliberation; they could simply turn their weapons toward them.
"What do you want?"
The members of Fairy Tail stood in front of Witch's Sin, confronting the members of the Magic Council.
"Step aside, Fairy Tail. These people are criminals. Although we are grateful to them this time, they must be taken back for judgment!"
Mest, representing the Magic Council, explained to the members of Fairy Tail. He did not want the relationship between the two sides to become too strained.
"Hey, hey, come on now. We just went through a war; what we need is recovery, not internal conflict," One Night said as he approached, feigning familiarity by putting an arm around Mest's shoulder.
"Exactly. Right now, what's more important than capturing them is figuring out how to clean up this place and assess the damage caused," Minerva, now the new President of Sword-Biting Tiger, added as she stepped forward.
Not just the two of them; members from Mermaid's Heel, Four-Headed Hound, and other guilds also came out. While they might not have a favorable view of Witch's Sin, they were not the type to burn bridges. Moreover, Fairy Tail had clearly stated their position. The guilds that had good relations with Fairy Tail naturally stood by them.
"That's right. My kingdom has suffered significant losses, and I hope to receive assistance from the Magic Council. For now, you should set aside this matter and discuss it later," Thomas E. Fiore, the king, also approached. Now the Magic Council found themselves in a precarious situation; even if they wanted to arrest these individuals, they had to think twice.
Reluctantly, the Magic Council could only take their people away from the scene.
