The Eclipse Gate, the activation device for Eclipse, was established quite swiftly under Newton's supervision. In terms of technological sophistication, it was still not as advanced as Newton's armor; the key elements were the magic circle inside and the polishing of the minerals. Newton had no intention of using Alchemy to assist; he preferred to take his time.
As for the Dark Guild, they could do whatever they wanted. Despite Newton having kept the Dark Guild under wraps, misunderstandings still arose. If he were to be more overt, it would surely drive the entire kingdom mad. Newton had completely lost hope in these politicians with their exceptional imagination.
Even Mavis, who had stayed there for a while, found it rather dull and decided to return to Newton's laboratory. Playing with Ginger was far more interesting than overseeing things here.
However, despite Newton's leisurely pace, the Eclipse Gate was completed within a year. For everyone involved, a year was an incredible feat. Looking at the massive Eclipse Gate before them, it was clear that such a construction was beyond what an ordinary person could achieve.
"Opening such a large gate requires an enormous amount of magical power and Celestial Spirit Mages. While there are plenty of Celestial Spirit Mages around, the ones needed must be holders of the Zodiac Keys, right? Do you currently have any Celestial Spirit Mages who possess Zodiac Keys?"
Newton expressed his skepticism. Not only that, but he also wondered how they planned to gather the immense magical power required to activate Eclipse.
"This will depend on everyone's efforts to find them. However, we already have an idea for accumulating magical power."
Thomas E. Fiore appeared quite confident.
"I plan to hold a festival called the Dragon King Festival! It will be framed as a competition to select the strongest Mage Guild in the kingdom, inviting all top Mage Guilds to participate. Through battles, we can absorb the magical power generated when they cast spells, providing us with a substantial source of magic! We can simply explain that we've installed magical absorption devices around the arena for the safety of the spectators!"
The Dragon King Festival had been a tradition hundreds of years ago, but Newton knew it was not merely a festival. In reality, it was a brutal contest—dragons against dragons, humans against humans, and humans against dragons in fierce combat.
"That name doesn't sound very auspicious."
Newton shook his head. If they wanted to proceed this way, so be it. Besides, he had already modified that gate; on the surface, it looked like any other Eclipse Gate, but its actual effectiveness was significantly diminished. The main component absorbing magical power inside was an enormous Magic Crystal that Newton had placed there. The entire magical supply system was under his control, so he wasn't worried about the possibility of Eclipse Gate being activated in a few years.
"Alright then, if there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
Newton decided to depart without attending the palace celebration for the completion of Eclipse Gate and returned directly to Fairy Tail. Of course, he didn't fly back in his armor but took a leisurely carriage ride instead. At the same time he left, news about the Dragon King Festival began to spread.
Almost all Mage Guilds showed great interest in this Dragon King Festival. After all, there were no firsts in literature and no seconds in martial arts; no one could resist the allure of being number one. Thus, all Mage Guilds began preparing eagerly.
Even Makao approached Newton when he returned to the Guild.
"Newton, what's this Dragon King Festival about? Should we participate as well?"
Makao saw this as an opportunity. Although Fairy Tail had thrived over the past year with Newton's support, things were different now; many viewed Fairy Tail as merely a shell—capable of taking high-level jobs but lacking real strength beyond just having money.
As a Mage of Fairy Tail, both Makao and the others were quite furious about this kind of magic. They had their own pride and wanted everyone to know that Fairy Tail would always be Fairy Tail.
Newton could understand their thoughts, but the ins and outs of the Dragon King Festival were something he was quite aware of. He didn't think much of it, so since everyone wanted to go, they might as well have some fun. Newton didn't plan to participate himself.
"If you want to join, go ahead. I probably won't be going. Makao, keep track of how many people want to go and let me know. We'll do some internal screening in our Guild."
Newton had a lot of confidence in the Mages of Fairy Tail. Although they might not be as strong as Natsu and his friends, they were still formidable among ordinary Mages. They might not match up to Leo Natsu and his crew, but they would be enough to hold their own.
"Alright, I'll go see who wants to join right away!"
Makao and the others in the Guild were quite enthusiastic; it seemed like everyone wanted to go. The remaining two members from Biska Team and Reby Team, along with a few from Makao's group, quickly formed what could be considered the strongest team in the current Fairy Tail.
Even though Makao was leading the team, Newton thought for a moment and decided to follow along. He wanted to keep an eye on things; if anything happened, he could take care of it. Moreover, Newton knew he needed to establish a strong presence and show them that even the current Fairy Tail was still the strongest.
Since it was the first event being held, the competition format was quite straightforward—just a simple arena battle. There would be individual matches and team matches; defeating an opposing team would earn one point, and whoever had the highest score at the end would win.
The competitors included some well-known powerful Guilds like Azure Wind Antelope and Serpent Empress's Scale.
Mermaid's Heel was an all-female Guild that was voted as the most desired Mage Guild to join—unquestionably so, though it was mostly men who voted. And despite being an all-female Guild, there were plenty of strong Mages within.
There were four more teams participating, making a total of eight teams battling it out to see who could score the most points in the end.
In this first year, Newton decided he would take to the stage himself. Even if it was just to give others a warning, he wanted them to know that Fairy Tail was still the same Fairy Tail as before.
Moreover, since the rules were not yet fully established, there was no restriction against the President participating. So when the announcer declared that Guild War had begun, Newton stepped directly into the center of the Arena.
"Um, President Newton, we haven't started drawing lots yet..."
The host said cautiously.
"No need for all that trouble."
Newton shook his head and surveyed all the participating teams.
"All of you, come at me together."
Arrogance, absolute arrogance. Instantly, several people were ignited with rage, but not many acted impulsively; one person jumped down from above.
"Hah, all of you? Who do you think you are? Do you think Fairy Tail is still the same Fairy Tail? Fairy Tail has long since fallen!"
"Indeed."
Newton nodded.
"Fairy Tail is certainly not the Fairy Tail of old, but who told you..."
Newton clenched his fist. Fairy Glitter! In a flash of light, one person collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
"Fairy Tail has fallen?"
The crowd fell silent. They had expected an explosive battle, but no one anticipated that it would end in a single devastating blow.
Suddenly, cheers for Fairy Tail echoed through the air.
