"It's over."
The four of them lay on the ground like dead dogs.
"Is Newton there?"
Newton's communicator suddenly buzzed, and Jin's voice came through.
"What’s up? Jin, I really don’t want to move right now."
"Bad news. You’d better run now. The Newborn Magic Council has already arrived, and their target is the Six Demon Generals and Gerard. Of course, since you're over there as part of the Dark Guild, you might get caught up in this too."
"I—!"
Newton wanted to move, but his body was in excruciating pain.
"How much time is left?"
"10... 9..."
"Damn it!"
With no other choice, Newton gritted his teeth against the tearing pain and donned his armor, pulling Laxus and Gerard up with him.
"Argh!"
"Ah!"
Two cries of despair echoed, and Laxus and Gerard felt faint, but there was nothing they could do; their spirits were unusually high at that moment.
"What happened?" Erza asked, puzzled.
"We don't have time! We need to get out of here!" Newton said hurriedly. Just as he stepped away, a group of soldiers surrounded the area.
"Who are you?" Erza asked, unfazed. With Newton taking Laxus and Gerard away, it was clear their identities couldn't be exposed, so she didn't worry too much about her own safety.
"I am Captain Lahar of the Newborn Magic Council's Fourth Enforcement Regulatory Unit. Where is Gerard?" Lahar's expression was serious, only to find that Erza was the only one present.
Though Erza was known for her integrity, seeing Gerard being rescued brought her a sense of relief.
"Erza, I ask you in the name of the Magic Council: where is Gerard?" Lahar adjusted his glasses and spoke in a threatening manner.
"Concealing information is a crime as well."
"I'm not withholding anything from you."
As someone who is often judged and criticized by the Magic Council, aside from Natsu, who really isn't the brightest, everyone else has had their fair share of verbal confrontations with them. Erza, as usual, shot back without hesitation.
"I just want to know where my companions are."
Lahar, clearly still a rookie, was getting a bit impatient.
"Hmph, don't think that just because you're from Fairy Tail you can do whatever you want. Do you know what crimes Gerard has committed? It's enough to have your entire Guild executed a hundred times over!"
"Boom!"
The ground erupted, debris flying everywhere, and Lahar along with his troops immediately tensed up.
"Oh? You think you can have Fairy Tail killed a hundred times? Since when did the Magic Council have such power to decide the fate of a Guild so casually?"
Newton stood behind Jin, followed by the Guild's security team, and the atmosphere grew tense.
"Newton, Jin..."
Lahar fell silent. If Fairy Tail's intimidation wasn't enough, then the presence of the Guild's security was truly frightening.
"Alright, let's investigate and ask questions. I will not cover for anyone in our Guild, but you also can't falsely accuse us."
Newton's stance was clear: he wanted fairness. Lahar couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief; at least they were following proper procedures. If they were truly intent on targeting him, he might not be able to withstand it.
Newton walked over to Erza and helped her up.
"How did you come back?"
Erza was somewhat surprised; hadn't Newton run off with Laxus and Gerard?
"I forgot about that. That guy knows about me and Laxus, and if he spills the beans, it could be trouble. So I had to come back and see if I could deal with him."
Erza didn't ask how he planned to resolve it. She wasn't the kind of person to be overly rigid when it came to the lives of friends versus enemies.
"Gerard."
"We've hidden him away."
Newton's words relieved Erza.
"If he wants, he can stay in the Guild and just change his name. At least no one in the Guild would dare to touch him. Otherwise, he can go out and see what he chooses."
"Yeah, maybe he'll choose to go out for a while."
Erza understood her childhood friend quite well.
"By the way, about your body."
Erza was curious about how Newton had recovered so quickly. After all, just drinking one potion had left her and the others in agony; how could Newton still be walking around freely after two?
"I used a potion to numb my facial nerves. Right now, I just can't make any expressions. I'm covered in armor to support my body."
Newton remained expressionless.
"Thank you for your hard work."
Erza suddenly reached out to touch Newton's face.
"......"
Newton was momentarily stunned, as he had never seen such a gentle side of Erza before. It was truly astonishing.
"......"
Erza herself was a bit taken aback; she hadn't expected to make such a gesture. Over the years, the image of the person who had lingered in her heart had gradually faded, while another figure had emerged—someone who had given her clothes, seemingly mocking yet actually encouraging her relationship, crafting armor for her, measuring her for it, and even bathing together.
"Boom!"
Erza suddenly exploded with emotion.
"Feeling sad?"
Laxus and Gerard silently watched this scene unfold. A single potion could tear their bodies apart with pain, yet even Erza could walk with Newton's help. For them, leaning against the wall and sitting up was no small feat.
"Maybe a little. Perhaps being with Newton is better."
Gerard sighed, feeling more of a sense of relief than anything else.
"I owe Erza too much and have hurt her deeply. I really don't have the confidence to give her happiness."
"Hah, that Newton kid has a girlfriend and has been living together with her for several years."
Laxus shamelessly slandered Newton, thinking that if he could stir things up successfully, he might even team up with Gerard to take Newton down a notch.
"Well, as long as Erza can be happy."
It was Gerard's reaction that left Laxus speechless; he had never seen someone so generous before.
"If Erza is a princess, then I am not a prince. At most, I am a knight; Newton is the prince. A knight may fall in love with a princess, but in the end, it will always be the prince who ends up with her. Knights often die protecting the happiness of the princess."
"That's really cruel."
Laxus scoffed.
"Fairy tales are originally quite cruel."
Gerard smiled, whether from sadness or relief, it was hard to tell.
"I find I can talk quite well with you. When I go back, would you like to join my Thunder God Clan?"
"No, this world is vast. I plan to wander and see what I truly want to do."
