“Gerard!”
Erza, clad in armor, rushed over and immediately spotted Newton and Gerard at the chessboard.
“Newton?”
“Ah, sorry! I'm tied up right now and can't greet you.”
Newton looked a bit awkwardly at Erza.
“What are you doing here?”
Erza had already prepared herself for a showdown with Gerard, but why was Newton here, and why was he captured?
“Sorry, I lost a fight against him, so I got brought here.”
Despite saying this, Newton showed no signs of embarrassment.
“You idiot, get out of here! This is my battle with him!”
Erza swung her sword and cut the ropes binding Newton, and he instantly felt his magic return.
“Awesome! This feeling of regaining freedom is amazing.”
“Aren't you leaving yet?”
Erza shouted anxiously at Newton.
“Don't be in such a hurry! You need a witness for your battle, right? Besides, I just got beaten pretty badly, so please don't mind me.”
Newton waved his hand dismissively, pulled a chair to the side, and then watched the unfolding drama with keen interest.
"Hmph, it seems I really made a mistake by not killing you."
Gerard now felt a twinge of regret. Looking at Newton, he didn't seem like someone with a hidden card up his sleeve. So even though he had some concerns, Gerard wasn't overly worried about the demon.
"Newton, you should leave here. This is between him and me; I'll handle it myself."
Erza had donned Lun's Armor, looking formidable like a Valkyrie.
"What do you mean?"
Newton had no intention of leaving; he remained seated, calmly watching Erza.
"Even if this is your matter, someone has to see it through to the end, whether it's to collect his body or yours."
"Get out of here! The Spirit Magic Power is about to fall; we will all die if you stay!"
Erza shouted anxiously.
"Then why don't you deal with this guy before that happens? If it's really like yours, then that Spirit Magic Power should drop down soon, right? Aren't you in a hurry?"
Newton continued to smile at Erza.
"Erza, why do I feel like this guy is helping me? Even if you leave me here and take on two opponents, I won't be at a loss."
Gerard remained vigilant against Newton. He couldn't help but feel hesitant in such an unusually smooth situation.
"Newton, please..."
To everyone's surprise, tears fell from Erza's eyes in front of Newton. He had seen her cry before, but it was a rare occurrence.
"Erza, we fought tooth and nail against one enemy after another not for you to come here and die. Death cannot save a person; it's merely an escape."
Newton's expression was unusually serious.
"Even if others want me to take charge, I can't be bothered. But you are my friend. I don't have many friends, but once I consider someone a friend, I won't easily give up on them."
"But I'm not that strong."
Erza collapsed to the ground.
"After all this time in Fairy Tail, haven't you learned anything?"
Newton shook his head and waved his remaining hand. The armor on Erza was stripped away and donned by Newton.
"When I made your armor, I left a backdoor in it. I can control every piece of your armor. Watch closely, Lun's Armor!"
With only one arm left and close combat not being Newton's forte, his swordplay could only be described as clumsy, especially in front of Erza and the others. However, Lun's Armor provided unparalleled enhancement to his physical abilities, allowing Newton to keep pace with Gerard.
But Newton's attacks were simply too weak. Time and again, each strike was dodged by Gerard, who retaliated with powerful punches that landed directly on Newton. Even at close range, Newton couldn't defend against the magic.
"Cough!"
The Lun's Armor on Newton shattered. Even armor has a shelf life and a limit to what it can withstand, and Lun's Armor was smashed apart by Gerard's blows.
"Erza, switch armor!"
Instinctively, Erza donned her strongest defensive armor, but it was soon destroyed again.
"Keep going!"
With each piece of armor shattering repeatedly, Erza watched in a daze as Newton charged forward wearing her armor time after time, only to be beaten until he coughed up blood and left the armor in ruins.
"That's enough..."
"Enough..."
"Enough."
"Enough!"
Erza suddenly shouted, her body wrapped in bandages, two blades appearing in her hands, instantly severing Gerard's magic.
"What I need to do is not for you to teach me!"
Standing before Newton, Erza was no longer lost; her eyes were filled with determination.
"I am a Mage of Fairy Tail, and I will not let my comrades die here."
"Don't you die here either."
Newton lay on the ground, quickly recovering his magic power.
"Don't worry, I won't die so easily."
Erza turned back, revealing a brilliant smile, then fixed her gaze firmly on Gerard.
"That includes you, Gerard. I will bring you back and make you atone for your sins!"
"That's quite true; I can't go back anymore, Erza!"
A hint of sadness appeared on Gerard's face as he unleashed his magic repeatedly. However, having already exhausted a significant amount of energy and magic against Newton, he found himself at a disadvantage against Erza. Each of his attacks was evaded or simply cut down by her Sharp Blade. In terms of physical combat, Erza was undoubtedly superhuman; the sharp blades were manipulated with perfect precision, grazing Gerard's body and forcing him to defend himself. He was soon pinned to the ground by Erza's swift maneuver.
"Gerard, stop it. We need to leave this place."
"No, we can't go back. I can never go back..."
Gerard covered his face with one hand, leaving two lines of hot tears.
"We will definitely think of a way!" Erza shouted.
"Although I don't really like you, I truly..."
Before Newton could finish his sentence, he pulled Erza aside as an attack came flying toward them.
"I can't go back because my goal has already been achieved!"
Gerard suddenly burst into laughter, and Zigrein joined in his mirth.
"Spirit Magic Power, descend!"
A terrifying magical power descended, peeling away layers of Paradise Tower until only the innermost part remained... the Magic Crystal.
