"Alright, your arm is all set now. However, since it's a new arm, there will be some differences compared to your old one. But as long as you get used to it, you should be fine."
Newton looked at Kildas, who had fully recovered. There was a clear distinction between the new limb and his body, and Newton felt no need to match Kildas's skin tone.
"Thanks. It turns out that flesh is much more useful than prosthetics," Kildas said as he clenched his fist, feeling the new arm.
"Of course. But what happened to you? How did you get such a serious injury?" Newton asked curiously. Looking at Kildas now, he didn’t seem like someone who had been ambushed; the wound looked more like it was inflicted by a wild beast. But was there really a beast that could harm Kildas? Newton didn't believe it.
"It was a dragon."
Kildas's words left Newton stunned.
"A dragon? Natsu's adoptive father?"
Newton was no stranger to dragons; after all, wherever there was news of dragons, Natsu would rush over excitedly. Moreover, he had heard plenty about Dragon Slayer Mages—not those who merely embedded Dragon Slayer Magic into Magic Crystals but real Mages taught by dragons.
"No, it was a black dragon."
Kildas shook his head, and Newton could see a hint of fear in Kildas's eyes. It was surprising to see this man, known as the strongest in Fairy Tail, show fear.
"It can't be that one, right?"
Black dragons were rare; there were many red dragons like Iron Dragon and Light Dragon that could be considered a species. However, there was only one black dragon. If it truly was that one, then Newton felt this joke had gone too far.
"Yes, the legendary Demon Dragon—Acnologia."
Kildas's affirmative tone left Newton momentarily silent, before he stood up and patted Kildas on the shoulder.
"It's good that you're alive."
"Yeah, the other party didn't even look at me. Just one impact and a bite, and I ended up like this. It's quite lucky I wasn't killed."
Kildas couldn't help but sigh, feeling a sense of relief at having survived.
"We shouldn't tell Natsu about this. The Demon Dragon... it's not something he can handle."
Newton advised Kildas against sharing this information with others. The Demon Dragon was essentially on par with Jelf, if not stronger. Acnologia was the ender of the Dragon Age, while Jelf was merely the strongest Mage among humans. A comparison between dragons and humans made it clear who was superior.
"Yeah, let's drop it."
Newton shook his head; beings of that level were beyond what they could face right now. Instead, he was more interested in gossip.
"Kildas, what’s your relationship with Kana?"
Kildas looked completely bewildered, his expression genuine rather than feigned, which surprised Newton.
"Kana? She's just a companion from our Guild."
"No, after you got into trouble, Kana was really worried. Considering her age, could it be that Kana is your illegitimate child?"
Newton joked half-heartedly at Kildas, but the complex expression on Kildas's face left Newton taken aback.
"Hey, wait a minute. Am I guessing right? You really...?"
"I... maybe... it's possible?"
Kildas couldn't confirm anything, as his past romantic escapades were far too numerous. Even he didn't know if he had truly hit the mark out there.
"Let's go back and check. If Kana really is your daughter, after all these years..."
Newton was at a loss for words, simply patting Kildas on the shoulder.
"I... I'll go back right now!"
Kildas was now completely flustered. Even though he was a rogue, usually women came and went easily for him, but suddenly having a daughter... He thought about the first time he met Kana and then every subsequent encounter, picturing her peculiar expressions. Kildas immediately became restless and grabbed Newton, rushing outside.
Newton didn't mind, as he needed to head back too. However, they had arrived by magic carriage, which was fast, but returning would be different. Kildas's magic was far too unpredictable; if something broke due to carelessness, it would be a disaster. So the two of them could only walk back step by step.
Upon their return, Newton and Kildas found a crowd gathered at the Guild entrance, where Erza and Natsu were facing off.
"What good fortune have we stumbled upon?" Newton approached Miraj.
"Well, Erza and Natsu have agreed to a duel, but no one seems to think Natsu stands a chance. Kildas, hello."
"Ha, this is the first time I've seen someone so unpopular. By the way, Miraj, where's Kana?"
Kildas rubbed his palms together anxiously, looking quite troubled.
"She's inside the Guild drinking."
Kildas rushed into the Guild without having the chance to express his gratitude, while Miraj watched Newton.
"You know?"
"I don't know, just a guess. They aren't father and daughter, nor do they have any other relationship, right?"
"Indeed, I was quite surprised when I heard Kildas had a daughter."
Miraj stuck out her tongue, appearing quite adorable.
"I'm not surprised at all."
Newton rolled his eyes in annoyance. With Kildas's personality, being a notorious flirt, who knew if he would have more daughters or sons in the future?
"Should we go inside? Or stay outside?"
"Let's go inside. The battle outside isn't that interesting."
Newton waved his hand. Indeed, the gap in strength between Erza and Natsu was too great; the antics inside the Guild were much more entertaining.
However, just as Newton held Miraj and was about to enter, a frog accompanied by a group of soldiers approached. It turned out to be members of the Magic Council, and they claimed they were there to capture Erza.
"I..."
"Are you serious?"
Erza contemplated stepping outside, but thin Newton walked over with a cold smile. Upon seeing Newton, the frog couldn't help but break into a cold sweat.
"Well, Sir Newton, we are just..."
"It's fine, just follow the procedure. I don't want our Guild to face any unfair treatment."
Newton couldn't be bothered to joke around with these bureaucrats. This time, the situation was serious because the results of the President's meeting had been compromised. The blame fell on Fairy Tail, but since Newton was present, things weren't likely to escalate too much. Moreover, in such a public setting, Newton wouldn't resort to underhanded tactics; after all, the Magic Council was quite an interesting force in its own right.
"Hey, Newton, what do you mean by that?"
Natsu was clearly upset; Erza was about to be taken away.
"Here, drink this."
Newton rolled his eyes and handed Natsu a vial of potion, which instantly transformed him into a lizard.
"You didn't have to go this far, did you?"
Miraj gently placed the lizard into a glass jar.
"Alright, let's go."
Though hesitant, everyone chose to trust Newton and allowed the Magic Council members to take Erza away. Meanwhile, Newton eagerly made his way to the Guild hall; there was still a good show to watch.
