“Magic Council?”
Newton put down the book in his hands and looked at Makarov.
“It’s just a collective meeting; there’s no need to be so tense, right?”
“Yeah, but there’s also this news.”
Makarov handed over a note.
“Curse Song?”
Newton stroked his chin thoughtfully.
“To be honest, I believe Jelf possesses the kind of ability that can cause instant death. After all, according to the Historical Records, the gap between us and Jelf is dimensional. However, if the artifacts he left behind still retain such a level of power after all this time, I find that hard to believe.”
“True, but we still need to be cautious.”
Makarov took a puff of his cigarette.
“The key issue is how to handle Curse Song. We currently don’t know whether that thing is a one-time use or can be used multiple times, nor do we understand its lethality. Until we clarify these issues, it will remain a significant threat.”
“That’s right. Then I’ll keep an eye on news regarding Iron Forest.”
Newton resumed reading, but then seemed to remember something.
“Oh, by the way, Specter has been quite active lately.”
“That guy Joseph, even in Holy Ten Miles Bread, is still considered young and lacks composure.”
Makarov didn’t seem to regard him as a threat. Although rumors suggested that Fairy Tail and Specter were roughly equal, just by observing the leader, Makarov could guess what kind of organization Specter truly was.
“Still, it’s troublesome. The reports from the shops indicate that Specter members are purchasing potions that could support an entire campaign. They’re buying through other Guilds, proxy purchases, and anonymously. It seems they’re planning something.”
Although Newton didn’t think Specter would pose a real challenge to them, he preferred to take precautions rather than being reactive. Otherwise, repairs could end up costing a fortune.
"Just handle it as you see fit, but try not to let the Guild suffer too much damage. Besides, it's not wise for us to strike first. We should focus on defense; otherwise, repairing the aftermath will be quite troublesome."
Although the Magic Council wouldn't do much to Fairy Tail due to economic reasons, being talked about was still a headache.
"Alright, I understand."
Newton nodded, indicating that he would take responsibility for investigating the matter.
That evening, Newton knocked on Laxus's door.
"What do you want?" Laxus asked, looking displeased. As Makarov's grandson, he didn't fully agree with his grandfather's ideals, but he held no resentment towards Newton. He recognized strength, and in his eyes, Newton truly qualified as a strong person.
"I need to discuss something with you. Mind if I come in and sit down?"
Newton looked at Laxus.
Laxus shrugged and let Newton inside.
"Do you mind?"
Newton waved the cigarette in his hand, and Laxus shook his head.
"Well, there might be some trouble coming up. If you don't have anything important to do, it might be better for you to stay in."
"Trouble?" Laxus frowned.
"What's the point of letting those weaklings stay in our Guild?"
"I'm not here to argue with you. I'm just here to inform you."
Newton couldn't be bothered to argue with the rebellious teenager. In the past, Laxus had looked down on those weaker than himself, believing that anyone weaker had no right to be in the Guild. This attitude had led to a conflict with Elfman, and since Miraj wasn't present at the time, Newton had stepped in, which was how Laxus came to acknowledge him.
"Hmph, is it not enough to have you guys around? Or have you already regressed?"
Lightning flickered in Laxus's eyes as he looked at Newton with a mischievous grin, as if ready to fight at any moment.
"You can try," Newton replied, sparks of electricity crackling in his hand. He narrowed his eyes and took a puff of smoke, glaring at Laxus.
"I don't have time for this. Sting has a mission that needs my help, so I might be away from the Guild for a while."
Laxus turned his head away with a haughty demeanor.
"Well then, keep an eye out for Specter when you leave. Recent intel suggests they might be up to something big."
Newton sighed, extinguishing his cigarette and preparing to leave.
"Is the information reliable?"
Laxus suddenly spoke up. Despite his pride, he wasn't foolish. Joseph, the President of Specter, was one of the Holy Ten. Although Laxus believed himself strong, he lacked confidence when facing the Holy Ten. If it truly was Specter, Kildas was on a century-long mission and wouldn't be back anytime soon. Mister Gang didn't even know where the President was; they would only see him when he returned for a mission. This left only himself, Newton, and possibly Miraj and Erza among the S-Class Mages in the Guild. It seemed they were in a bit of trouble.
"I don't know for sure, but lately the only Dark Guild making waves is Iron Forest. They seem to have found evidence of Curse Song's existence. However, what Specter is acquiring isn't meant for solo operations; it's more suited for warfare."
"You guys have a problem?"
If the situation looked dire, Laxus would decide to let Sting abandon his mission.
"No, it's just that if the fighting escalates too much, repairs will be quite troublesome."
Newton's words left Laxus feeling somewhat speechless.
"If it's just Joseph's headquarters sending people over, it shouldn't be an issue. The strongest member of Specter is Joseph himself, but he wouldn't stand a chance against our President. His subordinates are merely Four Elements; although they claim to have S-Class strength, they're roughly on par with Natsu and his group. They are nothing like our S-Class Mages. There's also one who is rumored to be an Iron Dragon Slayer Mage like Natsu; those are their strongest members. However, their branches are numerous. If they all decide to attack us at once, our Guild will find it hard to cope."
Newton's explanation made Laxus nod.
"In that case, it's a problem with the branch guilds? That shouldn't be an issue. We'll take care of those branches after we leave."
"Right. If you see Mister Gang, make sure to say something to him."
"Is it okay to take action directly?"
Laxus sneered, a fierce expression on his face.
"Natsu was able to destroy a port just by facing one Fire Mage. Can't you handle a branch guild?"
Newton's words left Laxus looking displeased.
"Don't compare me to that useless fool."
"We're both Dragon Slayer Mages; there's no need for that."
Newton shook his head and left Laxus's room.
