“Beast King?”
Newton looked at the mission sheet in his hands.
“It seems that Beast King is primarily focused on strength and agility, right? Are you planning to give it to Elfman or Lisanna?”
“Hmm, let’s give it to Elfman. After all, he’s a boy. If he can handle Beast King, then I can rest assured knowing he’ll be able to take care of himself or look after his sister when I’m not around.”
Miraj didn’t believe she could stay by her younger siblings' side forever. If anything were to happen to her and she had to leave, they would have to rely on themselves.
“Alright, then get ready and head out. I’ll go grab some potions for you.”
Newton stood up, letting Miraj slide off his lap, and walked toward his laboratory.
“Aren’t you coming with us?”
Miraj shouted from the couch, making sure Newton could hear her.
“No, I’m worried that if I go, I might end up dismembering whatever Beast King we encounter. After all, anything that can be called Beast King should have some pretty good parts as materials.”
Newton came back down with a large bag.
“I’ve prepared everything inside for you—red potions, blue potions, along with explosives and tranquilizers. Just make sure to prioritize your safety. If things get too tough, just take out the opponent and come back. If necessary, I’ll figure out how to strengthen my siblings later.”
He set the bag aside.
“Hmph! They’re my siblings, not yours!” Miraj retorted indignantly.
"Yes, yes, yes..."
Newton could hardly have imagined that what seemed to him a simple task would lead to trouble.
"Where is Lisanna?"
He rushed into Poluchika's room and was met with the sight of a regretful Miraj, along with Elfman and Lisanna lying on the bed.
"Issac..."
At that moment, Miraj looked as if she might collapse at any moment. Seeing Newton finally arrive, the tension in her body relaxed, and she almost sank to the floor.
Newton quickly caught her, noticing her haggard appearance. His heart tightened as he lifted her and laid her gently on the bed.
"They..."
Newton glanced at Poluchika.
"There's nothing serious. Thankfully, thanks to your red potions, her injuries are healing quickly. It's just the psychological aspect that's more challenging..."
Poluchika indicated that Newton need not worry; there were no physical issues.
"Miraj's problem is mainly due to excessive fatigue."
"That shouldn't be."
Newton was extremely puzzled. Even if it was the so-called Beast King they faced, Miraj's strength should have prevented her from suffering such severe injuries. Could it be that someone was looking for trouble? The thought darkened his expression immediately.
"Newton!"
Makarov had already figured out what Newton was really thinking.
"Do you really think he's just a Beast King?"
Newton was somewhat puzzled by Makarov's words, but he nodded; that was indeed how he felt.
"Slap!"
Makarov's hand landed firmly on Newton's face. Poluchika merely shook her head, not saying much.
"You are too arrogant!"
Makarov said angrily.
"I admit, you are talented. The fact that you can research the long-lost Alchemy techniques is indeed impressive. But how long has it been since your last battle? You always look down on your enemies, and it's not just them; I doubt there are many in the Guild you regard highly either."
Newton's face turned various shades of blue and purple as he glanced at the three people lying on the bed. Even if he wanted to explain or say something, he couldn't find the words.
"The world of Mages is not as simple as you imagine. It doesn't work just the way you want it to. Every moment, every Mage faces the test of life and death. If you still can't recognize this, then just wait for someone else to collect your corpse, or I might end up doing it myself."
Makarov sighed and then left, leaving Newton standing dazed in the room.
"Isn't that a bit too much?"
Poluchika looked at Makarov. She still liked Newton, and seeing Makarov criticize him so harshly made her feel a bit uneasy. She worried about what would happen if Newton couldn't handle it; she was already concerned about Miraj and the other two. If something happened to Newton as well, it would truly be a problem.
"Don't worry, he'll be fine."
Makarov replied nonchalantly, a smile on his face that completely masked the anger he had just shown.
"That child is different from my family's Idiot grandson. He can actually listen to others, but he has never stepped into the world of Mage. This experience will allow him to see the harsh realities of this world, which will ultimately be beneficial for his growth. Besides, Newton's talent is quite remarkable. I wonder just how far a cautious mind can grow," Makarov said with great interest, chuckling.
"You rascal."
Poluchika shook his head, feeling a bit worried for Newton but decided to let it go.
Meanwhile, Newton sat beside Miraj, watching her sleep. The occasional flicker of panic on her face made his heart ache. He cursed himself for being so reckless. No matter how strong Miraj seemed in his eyes, she was still just a girl. He could have simply followed her; it was so clear...
"What have I done?!"
Newton slammed his fist against the wall, not caring that it drew blood.
After that, Miraj remained unconscious for an entire One Night, and so did Elfman and Lisanna. Throughout this time, Newton stayed close by their side.
"Hmm?"
Finally, Miraj stirred awake, and seeing Newton asleep beside her bed filled her with warmth as she carefully prepared to get up.
"You finally woke up?"
Poluchika's voice startled Newton awake, and he looked at Miraj with delight.
"Is your body alright now?"
Miraj looked at Poluchika with a hint of reproach, but he didn't care about that.
"You've been asleep for a whole One Night. You should eat something now."
It was like this, but Poluchika was not looking at Miraj; instead, she was staring at Newton.
Newton immediately understood and dashed toward the kitchen.
"Wait! Isaac absolutely cannot go into the kitchen!"
Miraj seemed to recall something and quickly prepared to stop him, but it was too late. Fortunately, everything had already been prepared by Poluchika—cooked rice porridge and vegetables—so Newton's disastrous cooking had no chance to shine.
"Here, ah..."
Newton blew on the food and brought it to Miraj's lips.
"Ah woo..."
Miraj enjoyed being fed by Newton, and after finishing, she began recounting the details of their recent mission.
It turned out that the mission wasn't particularly difficult, but the crucial issue was that Elfman had gone berserk after receiving it. Especially since he had been quite close to Lisanna when he took on the task. After Lisanna was injured, Miraj couldn't go all out to calm Elfman down for fear of hurting him, which ultimately led to this outcome. Newton felt helpless; if it were him facing his brother-in-law, he would probably have acted without hesitation. After all, a sister-in-law could be considered, but a brother-in-law? Well, perhaps a humane destruction would be best.
This mission had caused significant harm to everyone involved, but how many of them would grow stronger from this experience?
