In reality, Erza was incredibly strong, her speed in changing armor was astonishing, and her fighting spirit resembled that of a demon. Her combat intelligence was exceptional; at least Newton didn't think that mere monsters could inflict any harm on Erza.
"Excuse me, sir, is that lady... alright?"
The village chief was an old man; well, in this setting, he was practically a white-bearded elder.
"There's no problem. You should trust our Fairy Tail Mage."
Newton yawned and looked at the village chief.
"Chief, do you have any precious or special minerals around here or in other places?"
"Well, as long as the Mage can deal with those monsters, we would be willing to give up everything we have to meet the Mage's demands."
The village chief immediately knelt before Newton.
"My lord, you should hurry and help us."
"No, no, no, I can't accept that."
Newton quickly stepped aside; this was a matter of life and death. He drew his pistol from his waist.
"I'm not refusing to help; it's just that I trust Erza to handle things over there. The most critical issue is right here."
Bang!
A flash of flame erupted, followed by a whimper from the nearby bushes. Soon after, pairs of green eyes appeared among the foliage, and finally, a single eye as large as a fist emerged last.
"Ah, still old friends."
Although he wasn't sure if these were the same wolves he had encountered back then, they certainly looked similar.
"Ugh... Awooo!"
The owner of the fist-sized eyes was a giant wolf, standing at least three meters tall. It was undoubtedly the Wolf King.
"It seems these aren't the same wolves from back then."
He thought about it; if these were the wolves from his past, this giant alone could probably break through the barriers he had set up in an instant.
"But I'm not the same person I was back then."
With a mechanical arm holding a powerful handgun and his regular arm gripping a smaller caliber pistol, he prepared for the confrontation.
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The sound of gunfire echoed continuously. Newton's marksmanship wasn't great, so he could only rely on suppressive fire to keep the wolf pack at bay.
"Old man, get back! It's dangerous here!"
The village chief was stunned, finally realizing that Newton wasn't there to rob them but was genuinely trying to protect them. He immediately scrambled backward.
"Awooo!"
In the end, several wolves managed to break through the barrage and charged toward Newton, while a few others headed straight for the villagers behind him.
"Not a bad idea."
Newton pressed his hands to the ground, and countless sharp weapons shot up from beneath the earth. In an instant, several wolves were pierced through, their bodies cooling in death. The weapons Newton had created were primarily long ones, with about half of them buried underground. Ordinary wolves found it nearly impossible to move them, creating a significant barrier against the wolf pack's charge. Meanwhile, the villagers hurried back to their homes; although they knew the wooden doors wouldn't withstand much, it was at least safer than being outside.
"Smart," Newton thought, relieved that these people weren't overly curious. Otherwise, this mission could have cost a few lives.
He pulled out several bottles of Explosive Potion from his bag and, using the powerful Mechanical Arm, hurled them into the distance.
"Boom!"
In an instant, several charred wolves lay on the ground. The Wolf King let out a low growl, and all the surrounding wolves began to scatter and find alternate routes.
The Wolf King charged toward Newton, its massive body rendering the weapons he had created as fragile as toothpicks. They offered no resistance to the Wolf King's speed.
Newton grimaced and pulled out an RPG from his bag, firing it directly at the Wolf King. Following that, he shot a bullet that detonated the RPG, resulting in a massive explosion.
"Roar!"
The Wolf King leaped out of the smoke, its fur singed and curled in places. Blood oozed from exposed skin, but perhaps due to having lost one eye, it seemed to protect the other better; remarkably, that eye sustained little damage.
"What a hassle," Newton muttered under his breath as he grabbed a spear and charged forward. By this time, the wolf pack had already breached the village.
"Roar!"
One excited wolf reached the door and lunged at it; the weak wooden door stood no chance against its sharp claws.
"Clang! Hiss..."
The piercing sound sent shivers down the spine, and the wolf that had lunged forward felt as if its front paws were about to shatter. Its two paws were now drenched in blood, and it immediately let out a painful howl.
"What is this...?"
The person hidden inside the room was startled by the sounds outside. Hesitantly, they approached the door and knocked, only to realize something was off. Taking a knife, they pried away a layer of wood from the outside, revealing metal beneath.
At that moment, the village chief recalled how Newton had visited every household when he arrived. Initially, he thought Newton had some ulterior motive, but he never expected that Newton would use magic to turn all the doors into metal. Most houses in the village were made of stone, with wooden doors; this significantly increased the chances of survival for him and others.
However, there was still a problem: the windows. For this, Newton could only reinforce them, as glass and tempered glass were entirely different materials. Newton knew that glass was made of silicon dioxide, but tempered glass? He had no idea.
Additionally, Newton reinforced the joints; otherwise, if the doors and windows remained intact but were knocked off their hinges, it would be quite embarrassing.
This situation highlighted Newton's logistical advantages. If Erza and her companions handled these wolves, they would undoubtedly do so faster than Newton could. However, that might lead to injuries among the villagers. Others could also prepare for such things, but considering the costs involved—materials and labor—it was a significant expense. Newton didn't have to worry about those; he could source materials locally and use Alchemy to create what was needed. This was a clear advantage, and no one else could complete such preparations in just a short time. Thus, Erza's decision to invite Newton had indeed been wise.
Newton had anticipated this situation long ago and ignored what was happening behind him as he focused on the Wolf King before him. He thrust his spear forward with force. Although his own strength wasn't great, the power of his Mechanical Arm made this thrust formidable.
"Roar!"
But what are monsters? They are beings that wield magic. As the king of wolves, the Wolf King naturally possessed magical abilities. A blade of wind shot forth from its mouth and hurtled toward Newton.
"Damn it."
At such close range, there was no way to dodge; Newton could only brace himself for impact. Fully aware of his weaknesses, he took precautions with defensive armor already donned and shifted to the side just in time. The wind blade merely grazed his skin.
However, Newton's spear was quickly seized by the Wolf King and bitten cleanly in half.
"Wow, those teeth are impressive."
However, the remaining half of the spear in Newton's hand transformed even faster. Since Newton frequently used iron for Alchemy, his mastery over the metal was quite proficient. With a flick of his wrist, the broken spear morphed into a large blade, swinging horizontally toward the Wolf King.
At that moment, the Wolf King could only brace itself, opening its mouth again to receive the blow. Its thick fur was enough to form a formidable layer of armor.
As expected, the blade struck the Wolf King's body with no effect; it merely groomed its fur. The thick skin and subcutaneous fat posed a challenge, not to mention the solid muscles beneath.
Yet, even so, it was enough to leave a cut on the Wolf King's body.
"That's sufficient."
Newton's mechanical hand plunged in.
"Alchemy!"
The mechanical hand quickly reconfigured itself into something resembling a sea urchin, with countless spikes protruding from the Wolf King's body, crimson blood dripping down.
"Alchemy."
The metallic sea urchin transformed back into a mechanical arm. Newton let out a slight sigh of relief; now that only the wolf pack remained, it would be much easier to deal with.
