Newton refined all the materials, using the least amount for potions, as everyday tools could be made from the iron elements found in the earth. He left these items for the village, knowing he couldn't take them with him; it was just a way of doing a favor.
After bidding farewell to the villagers, Newton finally set off on his journey.
"Hmm, this herb has some use."
Newton looked at a herb growing by his feet. This wasn't the first time he had discovered herbs, but his backpack wasn't large, so he had to make choices.
"Ugh..."
A low, threatening growl made Newton look up to see a pair of green eyes watching him from a distance.
"Wolves?"
Crouching down, Newton touched the ground, and a circle of Iron Thorns appeared around him. He quickly pulled an explosive potion from his backpack.
"Roar!"
A wolf howled in the distance, and then the pack began their attack. However, due to the presence of the Iron Thorns, they could only circle around Newton, unable to find a way in.
"It seems these wolves don't have great jumping ability?"
As he thought this, Newton expanded the range of the Iron Thorns while keeping the Explosive Potion close at hand for quick access.
Being surrounded wasn't a viable strategy for long. Newton strapped the Explosive Potion to his arm and focused on the wolf pack, placing his hands on the ground.
The ability of Alchemy was to understand, decompose, and refine. If he only reached the decomposition stage, it would cause terrifying destruction to objects.
What Newton aimed to do now was to create a tunnel using Alchemy, softening the earth beneath him through decomposition. He could even produce bricks directly and then build them up inside the Iron Thorns, making it look like a fortified tower. If the wolves had any ideas at that moment, they might find themselves in trouble.
Wolves are intelligent creatures; they couldn't comprehend what Newton was doing but realized that staying there was just wasting their time. So they decided to leave. However, it wasn't long before Newton emerged from underground.
Digging underground was indeed a massive undertaking, and Newton wasn't foolish enough to attempt it. Wild animals were quite intelligent, and given Newton's small stature, the labor involved in such a task was disproportionate to any potential reward. He might not even be able to eat well from it, which was why he decided to leave. Now, he felt fortunate that this wasn't a magical beast; otherwise, he would have been in real trouble.
"It seems I need to be more cautious."
Furrowing his brow, Newton recalled that the herbal remedies he had were based on formulas from his previous life. However, it appeared that there were indeed some differences between the two worlds. While the mystical aspects seemed relatively unchanged, the biological differences were significant.
"Steel Alchemy!"
A shotgun and a handgun materialized between Newton's hands, followed by several magazines.
"If only I had thought to try mining earlier. If I could gather some enchanted materials, magical bullets would be incredibly useful for me right now."
Unfortunately, there was no way around it; the village lacked any mineral resources. Moreover, Newton's skills in enchanting were merely theoretical at best. Although Alchemy allowed for equivalent exchange, without an understanding of enchantment, Alchemy couldn't take shape.
Bang!
A shot struck the tree trunk with decent power, but the recoil was too much for Newton's young body to handle.
Fortunately, he didn't encounter any danger afterward and soon arrived at the next town. Observing the bustling activity at the town entrance made him breathe a sigh of relief.
"Do they buy herbs here?"
It was tough for a skilled craftsman to make a living without resources. In the village, he couldn't earn much money; although he didn't spend much either, he had only managed to save a few hundred coins so far. That amount was hardly sufficient, so Newton had no choice but to check if anyone at the herbal shop would buy his herbs.
"Hmm? Young man, did your family send you out to sell herbs?"
The shopkeeper was a middle-aged man who looked at Newton and assumed he must be helping his family.
"Yes."
Newton nodded, then pulled out the herbs from his backpack and placed them on the table.
"Well, these herbs look decent, but they're not particularly valuable. I can only offer you one hundred j. How does that sound?"
One hundred j seemed like a small amount, but for Newton, it was a significant sum compared to the money he currently had.
"Um, thank you."
Newton took the bills and left. He actually had some gold coins on him as well. As an Alchemist, he initially aimed to turn stone into gold or create the Philosopher's Stone or Panacea. Although his Alchemy skills were not yet at that level, he could still extract gold elements from the earth and refine them into gold bars.
However, Newton understood the principle of keeping wealth hidden. In his previous life, when he first ventured out, he had stumbled upon many valuable items but had also attracted a lot of trouble, even facing life-threatening situations several times. Thus, he never underestimated human greed.
Next, Newton arrived at the Blacksmith Shop. His main goal was to see if he could afford to buy some ores. If he could craft enchanted weapons, his chances of survival would significantly increase.
"Conductivity of Magic?"
The blacksmith was a burly man; it seemed that most blacksmiths shared this image, which made Newton silently scoff in his mind.
"Yes, do you have any here?"
Newton nodded and fixed his gaze on the blacksmith.
"This is material for making Magical Devices or Magical Weapons; it's quite rare. Our town is rather small, but I do have a bit of it—though it's just scrap material."
Seeing Newton's eager expression, the blacksmith sighed and went into the back room to fetch a box.
"This box contains nothing but scrap material. If you're interested, I'll let it go for fifty thousand j."
Fifty thousand j sounded like a lot, but considering it was material for crafting Magical Devices and Weapons—even if it was just some scraps—it was still quite precious. Fifty thousand j was already a reasonable price.
"I don't have any money, but can this be used to settle my debt?"
Newton pulled a few gold coins from his pocket and placed them on the blacksmith's table. The blacksmith looked at the gold with a glint of greed in his eyes.
"Kid, this is still far from enough."
The blacksmith quietly reached for his hammer.
"I suggest you don't move."
Newton bent down, placing his hands on the ground, and iron surged up from the earth, enveloping the blacksmith's legs and rendering him completely immobile.
"Mage!"
The blacksmith was filled with terror. Although he was a strong adult, facing a Mage with greater power made him afraid.
"Please spare me, Mage! Spare me!"
Newton smirked, stowing the box into his backpack. The iron around the blacksmith's feet receded, but Newton still left behind only one gold coin before quickly departing from the town.
In fact, Newton's choice was wise. He had barely left when soldiers from the town came rushing out, and one could still see the figure of the blacksmith among them.
