Cui Ming pondered for a moment. "It seems her master is quite anxious. After failing to use forceful means, they can only resort to threats in their discussions with you. Analyzing this, it doesn't seem to have much to do with you. You could also approach Ding Ze; it should be a matter related to your work. Her master is not a good person, unreasonable and accustomed to acting recklessly. When that doesn't work, they are left with no choice but to sit down and talk with you. Hmm... Ye Family, her master is worried that you might hide in the Ye Family, so when the envoy saw Yellen and contacted the master, they demanded that the envoy confront you."
Beiyue sighed inwardly, cursing under her breath. Just yesterday, she had been resolute, but today she found herself completely moved. Yet she couldn't deny the joy blooming within her, especially after Cui Ming's dramatic display of throwing dishes... No, if this continued, she would inevitably develop feelings. She had important matters to attend to and needed to break through her own limitations. Beiyue understood that this state was called budding; as long as they kept their distance and accepted new spaces, people, and things, the feelings between them would eventually dissipate. Before that happened, she shouldn't deliberately resist; doing so would only backfire.
Of course, Beiyue didn't understand all of this, but Jayce did. Just during breakfast when Yellen went to arrange transportation, Beiyue consulted Jayce about how to avoid entangling herself in romantic feelings. Why did she turn to Jayce for advice? Because she had watched his variety show the night before, where his rational analysis of relationships was spot on.
Jayce was surprised and asked Beiyue why she wanted to reject the budding of a pure relationship. Beiyue explained her father's situation, saying that it was serious because he hadn't sought help from the Alliance at the time. This indicated that the opposing forces were far stronger than her father. She needed to become a true strong person to face the truth, and on the path to becoming strong, unnecessary emotions couldn't exist.
Jayce didn't know much about Beiyue's father but was surprised to learn that Yellen had connections with him. When Yellen returned and heard them discussing Master Bei, he immediately recognized Beiyue's identity. Yellen said that Beiyue's father was indeed part of the Alliance and one of the best weapon smiths on the planet; the Alliance took this matter seriously but had no results.
Yellen told Beiyue that if she needed help regarding her father's situation, she could contact him directly because his Greatsword was crafted by Beiyue's father. At the time of Ye Family's patriarch's eightieth birthday celebration, when Beiyue's father was still unmarried, he used a Force Stone provided by Ye Family and spent a year crafting a Greatsword as a gift for the patriarch's birthday. After Yellen practiced Six Elements, his mentor discovered that Yellen's temperament matched perfectly with this Greatsword and thus gifted it to him.
Beiyue also learned about the origin of her Greatsword; a year’s worth of hard work deserved compensation—the reward being an unprocessed Force Ore. Before crafting weapons, one must first understand the ore and then add other materials to forge it into refined iron before creating weapons. Crafting for others took a year at most; it was quite generous. For one's own child, however, it took seven years. In other words, Beiyue had yet to fully unleash the potential of Qianren Greatsword.
Jayce finally added some more words...
"Cui Ming."
"Yes?"
Beiyue took out the knife wrapped in cloth and said, "This knife is called Qianren. My father told me when he gave it to me that a wall stands firm like Qianren, and only by being devoid of emotions and desires can one truly wield its power."
Cui Ming understood and nodded slowly. "Along this journey, we have become too close. The professor mentioned your knife to me, and even if Li Qing encounters trouble, I would still help. Of course, we both know what’s going on in our hearts. I respect you, and since you have a legitimate reason to refuse, rather than looking down on me, I am already satisfied."
"Are we still friends?" Beiyue asked.
"We have always been friends," Cui Ming replied. At twenty-three, he was already quite rational, especially for someone like him. First love belongs to youth, not adolescence. This damned journey had brought them closer together, and given that Beiyue was beautiful, prolonged contact would inevitably stir feelings. Cui Ming had long realized that Beiyue was not solely in pursuit of the truth; she was a strong woman who wanted to do better and become stronger. This trait was neither right nor wrong; it simply did not suit someone like Cui Ming, who preferred to go with the flow. Who knows?
Beiyue had an objective requirement not to be entangled in emotions; she knew what she wanted—the truth was what she must pursue. After the assessment, if everyone passed, they would each have their own matters and responsibilities. If all five failed, they would begin to travel the continent in search of breakthroughs. Their time together with Beiyue would always be brief. Conversely, Cui Ming also had aspirations; he wished to become stronger as well. If after the assessment he could find a common platform with Beiyue, he could strive for more then; surely Beiyue would not deny him that opportunity. If there were no platform for the two of them, then why add unnecessary worries?
What did Jayce say to Beiyue in the end?
Jayce said, "This kind of feeling is called a non-choosing gradual approach. When a man and woman are together for a certain period of time, they develop a desire for each other’s affection. If they find themselves without other options, they will compare themselves with the outstanding individuals around them and thus develop feelings. This kind of emotion is fragile and vulnerable because it can collapse in front of someone superior. Beiyue, you have been an iceberg for years; Cui Ming has been secluded for five years and emerged as a practitioner. Your circle consists only of you few people; Ding Ze has not attempted to approach you for other reasons, which allows you to maintain your icy demeanor. Cui Ming's attempts to get closer to you have led you to harbor thoughts because of this desire period; in the absence of comparisons, one tends to see only the excellent side of the other while overlooking their flaws."
...
Setting aside matters of the heart, Mi Xiaonan returned fully prepared. Cui Ming felt guilty for wasting his efforts and shared everything with Mi Xiaonan. She didn’t care about his wasted trip; instead, she happily said, "This is best! This is best! I was terrified when I heard the target was Beiyue."
Cui Ming asked, "Beiyue, what about the Ye Family and Jayce?"
"They have already left," Beiyue replied. "Jayce did leave a phone number; he said if there are any difficulties, we can contact him. He reminded us not to forget that we fought together as comrades."
Cui Ming asked, "What about the Silent City Envoy?"
"We're not leaving today; we'll call her master directly tonight."
Cui Ming sighed and clapped to encourage himself and everyone else. "Alright, now we need to start the most tedious task. Beiyue, you have to answer all my questions. We need to figure out the other party's intentions so we can gain the upper hand in tonight's negotiations."
"Negotiations?" Beiyue asked in response.
"Of course. He can't get answers through violence; he must pay a corresponding price," Cui Ming explained. "I've heard he possesses a Spectral Cloak... I don't know what it is, but our bottom line is that treasure. Three major conditions and seven minor conditions." Why capture someone alive? Why offer something that would put Eva in danger? And why send Wraith to work with Eva?
As for why the other party chose to kidnap first instead of negotiating with Beiyue, there was an answer. The answer indicated that this matter was difficult to discuss; Beiyue would likely refuse. Moreover, Beiyue could be quite stubborn at times and wouldn't bend for a mere three hundred rice.
