Tu Ling was annoyed by their incessant crying, so she instructed them to clean the meat and prepare some dry firewood.
Then, she called over the most innocent one, Bai Qi, and after sending everyone else away, only she and Bai Qi remained in the cave.
She first reached out to touch the rabbit ears on Bai Qi's head. "Listen carefully, I'm going to test your intelligence. The test is for you to tell me everything you know. If your answers satisfy me, I won't punish Fu Xiang. But if you get even one thing wrong, you'll be punished tonight."
Bai Qi visibly tensed up.
The level of intelligence was the fundamental criterion for determining an orc's status, which is why the Beast World operated as a matriarchal society. Females had significantly higher intelligence than males; only by following the females could the tribe improve.
"Matriarch, do I have to say everything?"
"If you get even one thing wrong, you'll be punished tonight."
Bai Qi turned pale, clearly terrified of the punishment awaiting him that night. He immediately began to babble about everything he knew.
It turned out this was the Beast World, where Male Orcs had two forms: combat and wildness. Females only had the combat form, but for some reason, most of their offspring were male, with females being quite rare.
Tu Ling silently complained in her heart; it was unscientific since the probability of having a boy or girl should be equal.
Each tribe occupied a portion of Orc Island and was composed of factions led by females. Those marked by a female represented that they had become her males, thus joining her faction. Males who did not join a faction were responsible for patrolling and defending the tribe.
The tribe Tu Ling belonged to was located in the center of the island, and her faction was the weakest in the tribe.
Tu Ling was from the Fox Clan, the daughter of Tumi, who had once been the leader of the strongest faction in the tribe. However, after Tumi disappeared, all males except for those in the cub faction had died.
As for these few men, simply put, Bai Qi was a rabbit who had been tricked into coming by Tu Ling because of his innocence; she painted a grand picture for him and he came along. The one with purple hair was named Purple Night; he belonged to the Serpent Clan and had been sent by his Matriarch to win Tu Ling's favor before Tumi disappeared.
The remaining cold man was called Silver Trace; he was someone Tu Ling had saved by accident. Silver Trace belonged to the Moon Wolf Clan and was naturally loyal. After being saved, he joined Tu Ling's faction even though it had already gained a notorious reputation at that time. Later on, Tu Ling and Silver Trace had a little wolf cub together named Silver G.
Fu Xiang was a young White Tiger cub, but his Beast Father had died.
Tu Ling curiously asked, "Where did Silver G. go?"
Bai Qi looked at Tu Ling's puzzled expression and found it somewhat strange. "Silver G. was given to Leader Zhao Xi by you, right? Last winter, the food stored in the cave wasn't enough. To survive, you traded the two-year-old Moon Wolf cub for a cow."
Tu Ling held her forehead; the original owner really could do that—trading a cub for a cow.
Bai Qi cautiously glanced at Tu Ling. "Matriarch, am I performing to your satisfaction?"
Looking at the soft and adorable creature before her, with its starry eyes blinking, Tu Ling couldn't help but reach out to stroke its fluffy head. The cute little white rabbit instantly turned bright red.
In the past, the Matriarch had either scolded or punished him; she had never praised him so affectionately or gently patted his head like this.
Soon after, several men returned, and the meat had been cleaned thoroughly.
Purple Night handed over the meat, and Tu Ling asked, "What are they going to eat?"
The only response was the sound of a few stomachs grumbling.
Indeed, going hungry had become a tradition in Tu Ling's Faction. Those who were well-trained could go without food for five days, like Bai Qi; those who weren't could last three days.
Tu Ling took out a roasting rack from her space. She was not afraid of betrayal from these men because this was a world where female power reigned supreme. If she died, they wouldn't survive either.
She placed hay under the rack and rubbed her thumb and index finger together to create a spark that ignited the hay. Then, using a sharp blade, she sliced the large piece of meat into smaller chunks and began roasting them slowly on the rack.
The men watched in shock as Tu Ling conjured something they had never seen before.
Gradually, a delicious aroma filled the air as the oil sizzled on the meat chunks; unfortunately, there were no plates to serve it on.
Tu Ling fixed her gaze on a large tree leaf at the foot of the mountain. "Bai Qi, go down and grab some leaves. Make sure they're big and intact."
Bai Qi nodded eagerly and hurried down to collect the leaves, returning in no time.
Tu Ling placed the roasted meat on the leaves and called Silver Trace over to eat.
At the moment the roasted meat touched his lips, his previously vacant eyes sparkled with life. It was incredibly delicious; he had never tasted anything so good. He wished Silver G. could enjoy it too.
While Tu Ling was distracted, Silver Trace secretly tucked away a few pieces of roasted meat into his Hide Skirt, but Tu Ling noticed everything.
She felt a pang of concern. "Can you really handle stuffing that hot meat into your skirt?"
Once Silver Trace had eaten his fill, Tu Ling cut the remaining meat into pieces and placed them on the leaves.
"After you're done, you'll take over roasting. Meat always tastes better when someone else cooks it."
Silver Trace approached, mimicking Tu Ling as he added firewood to the grill while flipping the meat.
The flames danced, and the fire crackled, startling Silver Trace. "This heat is even higher than Sun Blaze."
Sun Blaze was a season in the Beast World, akin to summer before the apocalypse, but much hotter than that.
