Five people waded through the water and entered the cave. Just as they stepped onto dry land, Tang Hao'er couldn't help but exclaim, "Zhao Jun, you are amazing! You found such a hidden place!"
Outside, it was already bright, but inside the cave, aside from the dark section near the entrance, light streamed in through several openings in the cliff, making the cave feel quite bright.
Tang Hao'er and Li Wei dropped their bundles and excitedly began to explore. Li Wei noticed a canvas backpack that Zhao Jun had left in the cave wriggling incessantly and curiously asked, "Zhao Jun, what did you put in that backpack?"
Zhao Jun casually replied, "Just some food."
As he spoke, Zhao Jun placed Cheng Zhengxiong on the ground and helped him sit down. He turned to Su Mei and said, "Sister Su, please check the medical kit for any anti-inflammatory or fever-reducing medicine to give Big Bear. I’ll go outside to gather some firewood and be back soon."
Hearing that Zhao Jun was going out, Tang Hao'er, who had climbed up to a nearby opening, hurried down and said to Zhao Jun, "I want to go with you."
Zhao Jun gently squeezed Tang Hao'er's arm and whispered, "It's bright outside now; the bandits might have come out to search the island. Stay here and help Su Mei take care of Big Bear. I'll be back quickly."
Tang Hao'er pouted and said, "I want to go with you."
Zhao Jun smiled wryly and squeezed her again. "Be good. I’ll just gather some firewood nearby—enough for us to cook something. When it gets dark, I’ll take you out with me."
Tang Hao'er sighed softly and said, "Then be careful."
Just as Zhao Jun was about to head out, Li Wei, who had been wandering around the cave, suddenly shouted, "There's water here!"
That was hardly surprising; they had waded through water to get in. How could there not be water?
However, Li Wei's next words sent everyone into a frenzy of excitement: "It's fresh water!"
Zhao Jun grabbed Tang Hao'er and rushed over to where Li Wei was standing. The area was relatively dim, so Zhao Jun flicked on his lighter and saw a clear stream flowing from a crack in the rocks. Below it was a small stone pit where water collected and overflowed, flowing toward the sea outside the cave.
Zhao Jun cupped his hands and scooped up some water to taste. It was clear and sweet. He couldn't help but laugh heartily. "I can't believe it! The old man has arranged everything for us! I was just worrying about fresh water!"
Tang Hao'er also cupped her hands to drink a bit of water and giggled, "Now we can wash our faces!"
Zhao Jun smiled and said, "No need to wash your face; a bath is fine."
"Bah," Tang Hao'er replied, blushing as she lightly spat in Zhao Jun's direction. In this cave, with no cover, wouldn’t bathing expose them?
Zhao Jun lightly patted his own face and said to Tang Hao'er and Li Wei, "You two arrange the cave; I’ll go gather some firewood."
He waded through the water and stepped out of the cave. He returned quickly, but by the time he came back carrying a bundle of dry wood and a few coconuts, the seawater at the entrance had already risen to chest height.
The tide was coming in. Before long, this cave would be submerged beneath the sea level, and those outside would have no idea that there was such a hidden place here. They would never suspect that Zhao Jun and the others were hiding in such a location.
At this moment, Cheng Zhengxiong had been moved to a drier spot further up in the cave. Zhao Jun dropped the firewood and walked over to touch Cheng Zhengxiong's forehead, which was still warm from sleep. He looked at Su Mei, who appeared worried, and asked, "How is he? Has he taken his medicine?"
Su Mei nodded and replied, "I gave him some fever-reducing medicine and anti-inflammatory medicine. I checked his temperature earlier; it was thirty-eight point seven degrees."
Zhao Jun nodded. "He should be fine. After surgery, there are always some discomforts due to rejection. I'll check his wound and change the dressing; can you bring me some clean water?"
Su Mei stood up with an "oh" and hesitated before asking Zhao Jun, "What should I use to fetch the water?"
Zhao Jun smiled wryly and pointed to two large bundles made of blankets. "There are mineral water bottles and a kettle in there."
Feeling embarrassed, Su Mei hurried over to rummage through the bundles for something to hold water. However, as she squatted down, her long skirt—already torn in several places—fell aside, exposing her pale backside almost entirely. Zhao Jun couldn’t help but glance a couple more times.
At that moment, Tang Hao'er cheerfully ran over from another entrance above. Following Zhao Jun's gaze, she spotted Su Mei's exposed backside and couldn’t help but huff as she jumped in front of Zhao Jun to block his view. With an expression of mock seriousness, she asked Zhao Jun, "Is it nice to look at?"
Zhao Jun coughed awkwardly and said to Tang Hao'er, "Uh, could you bring me the first aid kit?"
Tang Hao'er huffed at him but turned around to fetch the first aid kit. However, her beautiful eyes remained fixed on Zhao Jun’s face as if she intended to make him feel utterly ashamed.
In truth, Zhao Jun had only glanced out of reflex; it was a natural reaction. He didn’t harbor any lewd thoughts—his heart was set on Tang Hao'er after all. No other woman could pique his interest, especially not one who was already taken.
Well then, perhaps it was best not to explain further; that would only make things worse. He had been caught staring anyway; embarrassment was unavoidable now.
Zhao Jun nervously unwrapped the gauze from Cheng Zhengxiong's shoulder. The wound had scabbed over, no longer oozing blood, but it was slightly red and swollen, indicating some inflammation.
At that moment, Su Mei returned and handed a bottle of mineral water to Zhao Jun. Tang Hao'er took the bottle from Su Mei's hands, deliberately positioning herself between Zhao Jun and Su Mei to prevent any contact between the two.
Zhao Jun grinned as he cut a piece of clean gauze, dipped it in water, and gently wiped Cheng Zhengxiong's wound. After applying fresh medicine, he took the last roll of new gauze from the medical kit and bandaged Cheng Zhengxiong properly. Turning to Su Mei, he said, "Sister Su, can you get a blanket for Big Bear? I’ll go cook something for everyone."
Su Mei responded affirmatively and ran off to fetch a blanket. Zhao Jun touched Cheng Zhengxiong's forehead lightly and called out softly. Cheng Zhengxiong mumbled a response, and Zhao Jun patted him gently, whispering, "Just keep sleeping. Sister Su will feed you something later."
Cheng Zhengxiong murmured again and drifted back to sleep.
Zhao Jun picked up the used gauze and stood up, glancing at Tang Hao'er with a guilty expression. "Um, I’ll go wash this gauze."
In times like these, every bit of supplies was extremely precious. Used gauze could be cleaned and reused; while it wasn't very sanitary, having something was better than nothing.
Tang Hao'er huffed and snatched the gauze from Zhao Jun's hands, glaring at him. "I'll do it instead. And when I get back, we’ll settle this."
Zhao Jun forced a smile as Tang Hao'er took a few steps away before suddenly turning back with a flushed face. "You should check where we’re sleeping; it's upstairs."
Where we’re sleeping?
Zhao Jun couldn't help but cough lightly; so that’s what you were busy with earlier…
