Zhao Jun and Tang Hao'er rushed into the cave, startling Cheng Zhengxiong and his two companions who were eating. Li Wei jumped up from the ground and asked Zhao Jun, "What's going on?"
Zhao Jun didn't have time to respond; he stepped onto the campfire, extinguishing it with a few quick stomps, then crouched down to scoop up sand from the ground to cover the remaining embers.
The cave they were hiding in wasn't particularly secretive; there were several large gaps at the top through which the stars could be seen. The firelight was quite conspicuous at night, and if the bandits in the helicopter spotted them, it would be troublesome. Although escaping at night was easier, a firefight would be difficult for them to withstand against the bandits' attacks.
Seeing that Zhao Jun didn't need help, Tang Hao'er quickly answered for him, "They are coming after us."
As she spoke, Tang Hao'er reached for the AUG standing nearby, racking the slide and readying it for action.
Cheng Zhengxiong nervously pulled out his large Desert Eagle and asked Zhao Jun, "How many of them are there?"
Zhao Jun reached for an Assault Rifle, but Li Wei was quicker and grabbed it first. Seeing Zhao Jun reaching for the gun, he hurriedly handed it over, saying, "Here you go."
Zhao Jun nodded as he took the rifle and turned to the panicked Cheng Zhengxiong, Li Wei, and Su Mei. "We still don't know if they'll find us here. Let's stay calm."
Tang Hao'er added from the side, "Zhao Jun and I saw lights at the mountain top; it should be another helicopter of theirs."
The cave they chose to hide in was very close to the coast, with the sound of crashing waves drowning out many noises, including that of a helicopter's engine. If they weren't particularly attentive while inside the cave, they might not notice when a helicopter approached. As it stood, the helicopter was still far away on the mountaintop, so Cheng Zhengxiong and his companions hadn't heard anything.
The group stealthily crawled out from the cave and hid behind some nearby rocks to gaze up at the mountain top.
Zhao Jun held up a pair of binoculars he had seized from a helicopter and observed for a moment before handing them to Tang Hao'er beside him. He whispered, "It's them. But I suspect they'll wait until dawn before conducting a large-scale search."
Tang Hao'er took a look through the binoculars for a while before passing them to Cheng Zhengxiong. She nudged Zhao Jun with her elbow and quietly asked, "What should we do now?"
Zhao Jun pondered, "For now, we can only take it one step at a time. We are not strong enough to confront them head-on, so avoiding their sharp edge is the best strategy for the moment."
Tang Hao'er chuckled, "So we’ll just engage in guerrilla tactics—retreat when they advance, pursue when they retreat, disrupt when they camp, and strike when they tire."
Zhao Jun smiled and said, "However, this cave we found isn't hidden enough. We need to find a more secluded place to rest."
After shooting down the helicopter, they had confiscated quite a few items from it. Some of these were temporarily useless, and it would be too cumbersome to carry everything with them every time they moved.
At that moment, Cheng Zhengxiong, who was observing through binoculars, whispered, "They've stopped."
In the night, it was easy to see the helicopter with its searchlight hovering in place. Li Wei grinned and said, "They've spotted that helicopter."
On the mountainside, Charlie glared at the wreckage of another helicopter below him. His lips twitched as he commanded one of the six pirates he had brought along, "Monkey, go down and check it out."
The pirate named Monkey swiftly tossed down a rope and descended from the cabin. Agile as his namesake, he landed and quickly maneuvered around obstacles to conceal himself while approaching the helicopter. Before long, Charlie's walkie-talkie crackled with Monkey's report: "Boss, Black Dog and Bian are dead from gunshot wounds. Their weapons are also missing."
Charlie’s eyes twitched slightly. They had only come out after dark to search and had not noticed the bodies on the other side of the slope. However, now that Black Dog and Bian were dead from gunfire while searching for Reng, it was very likely that Reng was already dead.
Just then, Shen Kun's voice came through the walkie-talkie: "Reng might also be dead. They took Reng's weapons and ambushed Black Dog and Bian. Boss, searching for those rabbits at night isn’t favorable for us. I suggest we retreat for now and split up to catch them once it’s light out. Damn it! How dare they kill our people? When we catch them, they’ll know just how foolish they were."
Charlie grunted in acknowledgment and ordered through the walkie-talkie: "Monkey, come back up first. We’ll settle accounts with them tomorrow."
Monkey responded affirmatively and grabbed hold of the rope hanging from the helicopter, climbing back up with a speed that rivaled that of an actual monkey.
The Monkey was a trusted aide of Charlie. Whenever they acted as pirates, he was always the first to climb aboard the cargo ship. Together with Shen Kun, who was skilled in combat and strategy, he earned Charlie's deep trust.
As the Monkey climbed into the helicopter, two bandits stationed at the door swiftly pulled up the ropes. Spitting outside the cabin, the Monkey glared at Charlie and cursed, "Damn it, Boss! Who are these five people that got away? They actually managed to take down Black Dog and Bian."
Charlie’s face darkened. "They probably took out Fear as well. Let’s head back and carefully check their backgrounds."
"Damn it! We can't let these five get away easily. We want both their money and their lives."
Charlie chuckled, "We originally planned to collect the money and let them fend for themselves on the island. If we want to kill them, we have to wait until after we get paid. Two of those five are worth a lot."
The Monkey laughed sinisterly and made a cross over his chest. "Poor Black Dog and Bian! You were taken down by a few fat sheep. What bad luck! Well, we'll collect your share for you."
The bandits burst into laughter. With three of their own dead, it meant they would get a larger cut when it came time to divide the spoils. As long as the trouble didn’t land on their heads, they wouldn’t genuinely care about the fates of Black Dog and his crew.
So far, including Charlie, no one had taken the deaths of their comrades seriously. They speculated that Black Dog's crew had simply run into bad luck; perhaps it was just coincidental that their helicopter malfunctioned at that moment while those who escaped took advantage of it.
Fortunately, Zhao Jun had kept the rope that had pulled down the helicopter as a treasure. Otherwise, if the Monkey had seen the wreckage tied to a tree by that rope, they might not have thought it was just bad luck for Black Dog's crew.
The helicopter circled around near the mountaintop for a while. A few bandits randomly fired shots into the dark below in frustration before the helicopter flew over the ridge and disappeared from sight.
Fortune Island was not very large, and Charlie knew that those Mainland Chinese who had escaped would surely notice their helicopter appearing at the mountaintop. However, nighttime was not an ideal time for pursuit; even though he knew those Mainland Chinese were lurking in the shadows watching them, he felt powerless to act.
