Zhao Jun opened the medical kit and placed it beside him. He unwrapped Cheng Zhengxiong's shoulder bandage, mimicking what he had seen in movies, and warmed the military knife over the campfire. Turning to Cheng Zhengxiong, he said, "I'm going to start now. Do you want to take another sip of alcohol?"
Cheng Zhengxiong replied with a grunt, "No need, just go ahead."
Su Mei, who was holding Cheng Zhengxiong's head, had already turned her face to the side. Her arms trembled slightly, and goosebumps rose on her skin; she was even more nervous than Cheng Zhengxiong.
On the other hand, Tang Hao'er moved closer to Zhao Jun and glanced at Cheng Zhengxiong's wound. Looking at Zhao Jun, she asked, "How can I help?"
This time, Zhao Jun didn't hold back with Tang Hao'er. He ordered in a deep voice, "Hold down Big Bear's arm for me."
Tang Hao'er responded with an "Okay" and pressed down on Cheng Zhengxiong's injured arm.
Li Wei approached hesitantly and held down Cheng Zhengxiong's legs, unable to bear watching how Zhao Jun would handle the wound.
Li Wei was used to a life of comfort and mischief; he had never witnessed anything bloody. He had thought this chicken-eating event would be just for fun, never expecting it to turn out like this.
Zhao Jun glanced at Cheng Zhengxiong and nodded at him. He poured some remaining Scotch whisky from the flask onto Cheng Zhengxiong's wound, took a deep breath to calm himself, and then without hesitation, raised the knife and plunged the tip into Cheng Zhengxiong's injury.
Cheng Zhengxiong let out a muffled groan and shivered but managed to hold back his cries.
Now that he had started, Zhao Jun no longer hesitated. With a serious expression, he used the knife to cut open Cheng Zhengxiong's wound further. The blood that had stopped flowing suddenly gushed out again.
Zhao Jun continued to cut along the wound until he quickly spotted the bullet embedded in the bone.
He set the knife aside and took a pair of tweezers from the medical kit. After warming them slightly over the campfire, he let them cool before inserting them into the wound.
The tweezers touched the painful spot of Cheng Zhengxiong's injury, causing him to finally lose his composure and curse under his breath, "Damn it," as beads of cold sweat rolled down his forehead.
It was rare for Cheng Zhengxiong to utter such profanity given his background; this showed just how immense his pain was.
Zhao Jun didn't look at Cheng Zhengxiong but simply murmured, "It'll be over soon."
While speaking, Zhao Jun's hands did not pause. He grasped the bullet head with the tweezers and pulled outward but failed to dislodge it from the bone.
Cheng Zhengxiong gasped in pain, closing his eyes and burying his head into Su Mei's embrace.
Zhao Jun pulled harder on the tweezers, and with a sharp snap, they came out of the wound. However, the bullet head remained lodged in the bone.
Damn, it’s really stuck tight.
Zhao Jun set down the tweezers and decided to use his fingers to dig into Cheng Zhengxiong's wound.
Cheng Zhengxiong grimaced in pain, burying his head deeper into Su Mei's abdomen, his body trembling slightly as he fought to suppress his cries.
Without proper tools, hands often become the most effective instruments.
Zhao Jun grasped the bullet head and shook it a few times before exerting force. With a pop, he yanked the bullet head out from where it was embedded in the bone.
He tossed aside the bullet head and exclaimed, "Got it out!" He quickly rinsed Cheng Zhengxiong's wound with whiskey, then took a piece of gauze and pressed it against the injury. "Help me hold this."
This wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, but Tang Hao'er swiftly reached over to press down on the gauze.
Zhao Jun glanced at Tang Hao'er and nodded at her. He then picked up a prepared suturing needle from the medical kit and said to her, "Remove your hand."
Tang Hao'er quickly pulled away the gauze. Zhao Jun seized Cheng Zhengxiong's shoulder, where the wound resembled an infant's mouth, and without hesitation inserted the suturing needle from one side.
After stitching four times, Cheng Zhengxiong's shoulder wound was closed up, with only a trickle of blood seeping out.
After disinfecting the wound again with whiskey, Zhao Jun sprinkled some anti-inflammatory powder on it and wrapped it with another roll of gauze.
Cheng Zhengxiong weakly lifted his head and said to Zhao Jun, "Thank you."
Zhao Jun tightened the bandage and patted Cheng Zhengxiong on the shoulder. "You should eat something and rest well. Hopefully, the wound won’t get infected; otherwise, we’ll be in trouble."
Cheng Zhengxiong murmured in response and tiredly closed his eyes. Zhao Jun sighed as he picked up the bloody dagger and tweezers from the medical kit. "I’ll go wash my hands. You all eat something and rest; I’ll be back to keep watch shortly. Li Wei, make sure to rest up; you’ll be on watch for the second half of the night."
On this deserted island, where enemies were just a stone's throw away, even sleeping required keeping a vigilant eye open.
Li Wei responded and released Cheng Zhengxiong's legs to pack the medical kit. Tang Hao'er, holding a bloody piece of gauze, stood up alongside Zhao Jun. "I'll go wash my hands with you."
As they stepped out of the cave, the sea was not far away, and it was high tide. The roaring waves crashed against the rocks on the shore, creating a rhythmic sound of water hitting land.
Zhao Jun and Tang Hao'er squatted beside a large rock, washing the blood off their hands. Tang Hao'er tilted her head, looking at Zhao Jun's profile illuminated by the moonlight, her eyes sparkling as she asked, "Zhao Jun, how come you know how to do everything?"
Zhao Jun smiled slightly. "Maybe I've watched too much TV. This is my first time helping someone with surgery."
Tang Hao'er scoffed. "I don't believe that. I watch TV all the time too, but I can't do any of the things you just did."
Zhao Jun chuckled as he shook the seawater off his hands and stood up. "You watch romantic shows; I watch war movies. Can they be the same? Alright, let's hurry back. Those bandits will likely launch a large-scale search for us by tomorrow. We need to conserve our strength."
Having taken down three bandits and a helicopter today, once those bandits realized what had happened, they would probably turn the entire island upside down searching for Zhao Jun and his companions. Even if there wasn't a fierce battle ahead, running and hiding would be unavoidable.
Seeing Zhao Jun stand up, Tang Hao'er quickly followed suit. Without hesitation, she linked her arm through his and cheerfully said, "You promised to be my bodyguard; you have to protect me closely at all times..."
Before Tang Hao'er could finish her sentence, a blinding searchlight suddenly lit up at the mountain's peak.
"Uh-oh, the bandits are coming! We need to get back quickly."
Zhao Jun's expression changed as he wrapped an arm around Tang Hao'er's waist, half-holding her as they swiftly ran back toward the cave.
