Zhao Jun picked up the AUG Assault Rifle from the ground, feeling a bit dazed as he stood there holding it. He glanced once more at the blood-soaked body of Rang before striding purposefully in the direction he had agreed upon with Tang Hao'er and the others.
On this unfamiliar deserted island, he could only meet them at a rough rendezvous point.
After taking a few steps, Zhao Jun suddenly stopped, turning back to look at Rang's lifeless body. He hesitated for a moment before resolutely walking back.
No point in wasting what was left; after all, some things were no longer of use to him. Rather than letting them go to waste or allowing the bandits to reclaim them, he might as well put them to good use.
Zhao Jun tried not to look at Rang's shattered head as he thoroughly searched the body from top to bottom. He found two fully loaded magazines, half a pack of cigarettes, a ZIPP lighter, a water bottle, a military dagger, two pieces of chewing gum, a wristwatch, and a pack of Combat Rations. He decided to take Rang's camouflage uniform, which was stained with blood, along with his belt and combat boots. He wrapped the items in the camouflage uniform and secured them around his waist. Slipping on the belt and carrying the combat boots over his shoulder, he stood up and left without looking back, clutching the Assault Rifle once more.
During their escape from the bandit hideout, Zhao Jun and his companions had been too frantic to carry much with them. Now, every piece of loot was invaluable and should not go to waste.
After spending several hours traversing through the forested mountains, Zhao Jun finally reached the bare summit just as dusk began to settle.
Standing atop the mountain, he took in the view of Fortune Island and couldn't help but smile slightly.
The island was quite small, covering just over two square kilometers. It had an irregular semi-circular shape with a mountain range running through both ends. From this vantage point, Zhao Jun could see the entire island clearly, even spotting the Bandit Nest nestled within its embrace.
The location of the Bandit Nest was undoubtedly prime real estate—surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the sea on one. From there, reaching any point on the island would be incredibly convenient. It was likely that this strategic advantage was why the Japanese had established their military camp there; moreover, the waters surrounding it would serve as an excellent harbor. Given its geographical position in the Pacific, this island held significant strategic value as a relay station between Asia, America, and Australia. It remained a mystery why the Japanese abandoned it; perhaps they hadn’t developed this good harbor before the war ended.
As Zhao Jun gazed out at the endless ocean surrounding him, he saw nothing but vast waters beyond Fortune Island—no signs of human activity anywhere in sight.
Retracting his gaze, Zhao Jun noticed a gray ship anchored in the harbor, and his eyes brightened involuntarily.
Without a doubt, this ship must have been prepared by the bandits for themselves. Perhaps it could serve as their means of escape from this place. However, the ship was docked in the harbor, and there would surely be bandits guarding it. Obtaining this ship would not be easy, and even if they managed to get it, they would undoubtedly be unable to evade the pursuit of the bandits' helicopters. This matter required careful consideration.
Zhao Jun was pondering how to extricate himself when he saw a helicopter flying out from the Bandit Nest, heading straight towards the direction where he had just eliminated a target.
This was bad; they must have sent someone out to search for him since he hadn't returned to camp for a long time.
Zhao Jun hurriedly made his way along the mountain towards the rendezvous point he had agreed upon with Tang Hao'er and the others. He knew that if the bandits discovered the body of the target, they would certainly conduct a thorough search of the island. This time, knowing that these few escapees were armed, the bandits would not take their search lightly as they had before.
Zhao Jun sprinted westward, leaping over rocks. He had arranged to meet Tang Hao'er and the others in the direction of the setting sun.
Running among the rocks was extremely exhausting, and it wasn't long before Zhao Jun's clothes were soaked with sweat.
He knew that no matter what, his legs could never outrun a helicopter in flight. Yet, Zhao Jun dared not stop; he had to find a suitable hiding place before the bandits' helicopter caught up with him. The mountaintop was littered with bare rocks, making it difficult for him to conceal himself. If the helicopter truly pursued him, it would likely spot him easily with a thorough search.
Regardless, Zhao Jun had to reach the forest below before the helicopter arrived. As long as he could hide in the woods until it got dark, he would be relatively safe.
The helicopter searching for the target had only two pirates aboard: one was the pilot, and the other was Bian, who had been fixated on tracking down their target.
In fact, several hours had passed since Bian and his group returned to Bandit Nest. It was only after some time that they realized that their injured comrade hadn’t returned to camp yet. Charlie, busy extorting money from hostages, didn’t pay much attention upon hearing this news; he simply ordered two men to pilot the helicopter and bring back their comrade.
The helicopter searched without finding any sign of him until it reached the large rock where they had parted ways with their comrade. It was there that the pilot and Bian discovered their comrade's body lying in a pool of blood. By this time, however, his blood had already evaporated under the scorching sun, leaving behind a large dark brown stain where he lay.
The helicopter circled above his body; due to the complex terrain, it could not land at this location.
Bian stared at the corpse beneath him, pulling back the gun's bolt with a sharp motion. He shouted fiercely at the bandit piloting the helicopter, "Fly to the top of the mountain! The bastard who killed Rang will definitely climb up to observe. Damn it, if I catch them, I will kill them!"
Bian certainly did not believe that one person had killed Rang. He knew Rang's ferocity and did not think that any of the few Mainland Chinese who escaped could possibly have been capable of killing him.
The bandit flying the helicopter laughed heartily and said to Bian, "Hey, Bian, wouldn’t it be a pity to kill them? Let’s capture them instead. You can have the men, and I’ll take the women. I’ve never tasted a Chinese girl before. I heard that one of those two Chinese girls who ran away is the daughter of a super-rich tycoon, and the other is a movie star. Heh heh, playing with a rich girl and a star—when it comes time to split the money, even if I get five hundred thousand less, it’ll be worth it."
Bian growled menacingly, "I want to tear them apart."
The helicopter pilot laughed wildly as he maneuvered the controls, directing the helicopter straight toward the mountain peak.
On the other side of the mountain, Zhao Jun was sprinting through the forest but was already feeling exhausted. At that moment, he could clearly hear the roar of the helicopter engine in his ears. He knew that the bandits had likely discovered Rang's body and were coming after him. However, he was still at least one or two hundred meters away from the cover of the forest below. It seemed unlikely that he would reach safety before the helicopter caught up with him. To make matters worse, this slope was barren rock; there wasn’t even a crevice large enough for him to hide in.
Damn it, am I really going to die here today?
