The helicopter flew overhead, and the four searchlights at the corners of the courtyard simultaneously focused on it. The masked men who had been guarding various spots in the yard began to gather around the area where the helicopter was preparing to land.
As they saw several burly men emerge from around the corner of a row of houses, weapons in hand and smiling, Yang Bing and the others felt a surge of hope.
It seemed there was no need for anyone to take the risk of diverting these men anymore.
Yang Bing whispered sharply, "Prepare to act. Zhao Jun, you're first."
Zhao Jun nodded vigorously while clutching a blanket, and they all squeezed next to the door.
Yang Bing gripped the doorknob, his expression unreadable as he watched the commotion outside.
The helicopter descended slowly. In the bright light of the searchlights, they could see young, excited faces pressed against the transport aircraft's windows, reminiscent of their own arrival at this place.
On the island where they had switched helicopters, Shen Kun and his group of thirty-two were the last to arrive. It seemed Shen Kun had been bluffing; his real purpose was to hurry everyone along to change planes.
"Go!" Yang Bing hissed as he quickly opened the door just a crack.
Zhao Jun grabbed Tang Hao'er’s hand and, crouching low with the blanket, swiftly slipped through the gap in the door, moving decisively toward a nearby corner wall.
This was likely their last chance to escape; dawn was approaching. Fortunately, a helicopter had arrived just in time to draw away the searchlights; otherwise, the consequences would have been dire.
Turning around the corner, Zhao Jun let out a sigh of relief. The group of bandits that had been gathered there had already been distracted by the newly arrived helicopter.
The six of them quickly darted out from the room. Yang Bing gently closed the door behind them and followed closely behind as they moved to the back of the row of houses.
At such moments, everyone's nerves were stretched to their limits. Zhao Jun held onto Tang Hao'er’s hand as they practically ran along the wall until they reached a section with barbed wire at the outer wall. By this time, Yang Bing had caught up with them. Without hesitation, he pressed against the wall and crouched down, interlocking his fingers to create a step for Zhao Jun. He shouted at Zhao Jun, "Step on my shoulders and throw the blanket over the barbed wire. You’ll help others climb over from up there."
Zhao Jun acknowledged with a grunt and released Tang Hao'er’s hand to step onto Yang Bing's hands. With Yang Bing's support, Zhao Jun climbed onto his shoulders and tossed the neatly folded blanket over the barbed wire. He pressed down on the wall's edge and quickly swung himself over, landing on top of the blanket while trying to keep the barbed wire pushed down as much as possible. He extended his hand downwards and whispered urgently, "Hurry up."
"Sister Tang, hurry," Yang Bing whispered urgently as he crouched down again, forming a step with his hands.
Tang Hao'er, her face pale, pressed her hands on Yang Bing's shoulders and stepped onto his hands. With a powerful push, Yang Bing lifted Tang Hao'er upward. Zhao Jun, who was perched on the barbed wire, reached out to grab Tang Hao'er's outstretched arms and effortlessly pulled her up.
Tang Hao'er successfully climbed over the barbed wire. Zhao Jun released her hands and said softly, "Don't be afraid, jump down."
Tang Hao'er was naturally fearless, but this was her first encounter with such a situation, making her a bit nervous.
"Okay," she replied, loosening Zhao Jun's grip. "You be careful; I'll catch you when you come down."
Hearing Tang Hao'er's concern for him warmed Zhao Jun's heart. He nodded and quickly turned to assist Su Mei, who had already been sent up by Yang Bing.
The spotlight moved with the slowly descending helicopter, and no one noticed that a dramatic escape was unfolding at that moment.
Zhao Jun followed the same method, pulling Su Mei up to let her step onto the wall. He then lifted her in his arms over the barbed wire and whispered, "Don't be afraid; I'll lower you down. Sister Tang is waiting for you below."
Su Mei hurriedly responded with an "Okay." Zhao Jun grasped her wrists and swiftly lifted her towards Tang Hao'er, who was ready to catch her.
What should have been a smooth operation took an unexpected turn when Su Mei's long dress snagged on a sharp point of the barbed wire. As Zhao Jun lowered her down, Su Mei's dress inevitably flipped up, exposing her bare skin.
In such a tense moment, no one paid attention to this detail—not even Tang Hao'er, who was holding Su Mei's legs outside the wall.
However, as Su Mei descended further, her dress wrapped around her upper body. Zhao Jun felt that Tang Hao'er had secured Su Mei and released his grip to turn back for Cheng Zhengxiong, who was being sent up by Yang Bing. At that moment, Su Mei fell faster, and with a ripping sound, a large piece of her dress tore away. Realizing she was exposed, Su Mei couldn't help but let out a sharp scream.
With Su Mei's scream echoing through the air, everyone inside and outside the wall froze in shock.
"Run!" Yang Bing shouted sharply as he exerted force to send Cheng Zhengxiong over the wall.
With Zhao Jun's assistance, Cheng Zhengxiong scrambled over the barbed wire in a flurry. Mimicking Zhao Jun's earlier actions, he turned to catch Li Wei being sent up by Yang Bing. Together they hoisted Li Wei over the barbed wire and lowered him down outside the wall.
The people near the Watchtower were clearly startled by Su Mei's earlier scream. A spotlight that had been illuminating the descending helicopter quickly shifted, sweeping along the barbed wire-covered outer wall toward the spot where Zhao Jun and others were climbing over.
Zhao Jun and Cheng Zhengxiong, perched atop the barbed wire blanket on the wall, simultaneously reached out their hands to Yang Bing, who remained inside.
"Brother Yang, hurry up!"
"Yang, jump up!"
Yang Bing quickly took two steps back and, using the momentum, lunged toward the top of the wall.
He leaped into the air, using his toes to push off the wall, arms outstretched toward Zhao Jun and Cheng Zhengxiong.
At that moment, the spotlight swept over them, locking onto Zhao Jun and Cheng Zhengxiong on the barbed wire wall, as well as Yang Bing, who had just grasped their hands.
The guards in the Watchtower shouted something unintelligible before a rapid series of gunshots erupted. Bullets flew toward Zhao Jun and Yang Bing, trailing fiery lines behind them.
Cheng Zhengxiong felt a sharp pain shoot through his shoulder and let out a scream as he fell backward off the wall.
Initially, both men were pulling Yang Bing up together. Now, with Cheng Zhengxiong suddenly letting go, Zhao Jun was caught off guard and was yanked down by Yang Bing's sudden drop. He crashed onto the barbed wire, several sharp metal spikes piercing into his body without mercy.
Despite the pain coursing through him, Zhao Jun held tightly onto Yang Bing's hand, refusing to let go.
Now exposed, Zhao Jun couldn't worry about anything else. He pulled desperately at Yang Bing's hand and shouted, "Brother Yang, get up here!"
Yang Bing grunted in response, using Zhao Jun's pull to leap upward with all his might. One hand managed to grasp the edge of the wall.
Just then, another volley of bullets rained down from the Watchtower. Yang Bing let out a muffled groan as his newly grasped hand fell limply.
Zhao Jun, once again pulled down by Yang Bing's weight onto the barbed wire, also groaned in pain. He looked up at Yang Bing and shouted hoarsely, "Brother Yang, push harder!"
Yang Bing looked at Zhao Jun, whose face was filled with anxiety, and shouted, "Zhao Jun, let go! I'm injured. You need to leave now."
"I won't leave, Brother Yang! I'm going to pull you up!" Zhao Jun gritted his teeth, pressing one hand against the barbed wire and straining to lift Yang Bing again. A tearing pain shot through the tendons under his arms.
The sound of gunfire erupted again, bullets striking the wall beside them and sending shards of stone flying, accompanied by showers of sparks.
Yang Bing yelled, "Go now!"
With that, Yang Bing silently released Zhao Jun's hand. He kicked hard against the wall, desperately breaking free from Zhao Jun's grip and falling toward the ground below.
Since these people dared to shoot at them, their earlier suspicions had been confirmed; this group was definitely not friendly.
Zhao Jun cried out in anguish as he saw Yang Bing fall to the ground, clutching his right chest. "Brother Yang..."
He noticed that Yang Bing's right chest was already soaked in blood, tears streaming down Zhao Jun's face.
Yang Bing shouted hoarsely at the seemingly frantic Zhao Jun, "Go! Survive! Find a way to get someone to rescue us!"
At that moment, another round of intense gunfire erupted.
Zhao Jun took one last look at Yang Bing before suddenly flipping over the wall and dropping down.
