Chapter 41: Ghost Howl Order Master
The room where Ji Zichen and the others were located had a clear view of the drying field. Ji Zichen closed the doors and windows, leaving only a small gap to peek outside. Her gaze was firmly fixed on Black Eyes as she asked, "Who is that person wearing the white mask?"
Seeing someone from Purgatory Palace approaching made her feel quite anxious. The response came, "I don't know either. Most of the Demon Beasts in Purgatory Palace wear Flame Masks, but this white mask is different from Sister Nine's Flower Cat Mask."
Noticing that Dong Qin hadn't brought anyone back, she worriedly asked, "Where's my father?"
Xia Zhou replied, "They refuse to release him."
Ji Zichen comforted her, saying, "Aren't you Sister Nine? You can negotiate for his release. There's no need to worry."
Faced with Black Eyes' skepticism, Dong Qin stated solemnly, "I'm not lying; I haven't seen anyone."
Black Eyes wasn't entirely sure either about whether Dong Qin knew the whereabouts of those two. She thought to herself, "Her expression seems off; perhaps it's related to what Sister Nine did to her earlier."
Black Eyes reminded the villagers, "The village of Tide Mountain 35 has accepted our governance. As your guardian, I hope our community can live in peace. No guardian likes disobedient children. You all remember what happened in Bashan Village, right? The villagers there were misled by The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant and attempted to purchase magical artifacts to resist us."
"You've seen the outcome; Bashan Village has been reduced to rubble. I don't want you to follow the same path as Bashan Village."
Xia Zhou listened in horror, her face drained of color. She gasped, "Reduced to rubble! Did they kill everyone in the village?"
Even though she had heard about it beforehand, hearing it again changed her expression. She said, "Yes, I've heard about Bashan Village from the village chief. The villagers refused to pay tribute and instead tried to buy magical artifacts from The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant. This information reached Purgatory Palace, and as a result, they were all killed."
Ji Zichen exclaimed in surprise, "Is that true?"
"That's what the village chief said; it can't be false. We are essentially spending money to buy our own lives. If we eat less and work more, we can stay safe."
Ji Zichen found it strange and said, "I've seen many man-eating Demon Beasts, but it's the first time I've encountered one that enjoys enslaving humans."
"They're not trying to enslave us; they're collecting wealth," came the reply.
Xia Zhou asked in surprise, "What do they collect wealth for?"
"This question was raised when the village chief came to my house to drink with my father. At that time, the village chief said they wanted to establish the largest monster stronghold at Tide Mountain. They also took in many monsters from afar; it's not just Tide Mountain, but many places outside the mountain are under their control."
Xia Zhou was shocked by this revelation. "They want to build the largest monster stronghold here! What do they intend to do? Do they want to rule over all living beings? That's truly delusional."
Feigning maturity, someone sighed and said, "My father once discussed with the village chief about finding a way to resist them, but the village chief insisted we should go with the flow and avoid extreme actions. In the past, people from The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant could enter Tide Mountain to sell magical artifacts, but now whenever someone from The Divine Alliance appears, they will be driven away. We used to have magical artifacts in our village, but they've all been confiscated."
"Report!" a subordinate from Purgatory Palace rushed in. Black Eyes glanced at him and asked coldly, "What’s going on? Why are you in such a hurry?"
The subordinate's face turned pale and then flushed as he stammered, "The... The two brothers of the Overlord... They’ve been killed, and their bodies were thrown into the tree hollow of the Dragon God Tree outside the village."
Upon hearing that their bodies had been discovered, Dong Qin's face turned ashen. Black Eyes did not notice Dong Qin's expression; upon learning that the two had already met their end, he felt surprised but maintained his icy demeanor. His gaze fell on the village chief as he dismounted swiftly. With three fingers, he gripped the village chief's jaw and lifted him high.
Everyone present was taken aback; seeing the village chief suspended in mid-air by Black Eyes made them want to flee. Ji Zichen pressed a hand on someone's shoulder and said, "Don't rush out! What good would that do?"
As Black Eyes held up the village chief, the latter flailed his legs in mid-air. Black Eyes coldly threatened him, "You people from Shangyu Village have some nerve to kill my men from Purgatory Palace!"
Though startled, Dong Qin quickly regained her composure and retorted angrily at Black Eyes, "Don't act recklessly! The deaths of your men outside the village have nothing to do with us!"
Black Eyes sneered at her words. "Do you take us for fools? The bodies are outside the village, but you killed them and moved them. It seems you truly have a death wish!"
Dong Qin shot back fiercely, "Who saw us kill them? You're framing us!"
Black Eyes said gloomily, "Frame a charge? Do I need to frame you to kill you?"
Dong Qin gritted her teeth and replied, "Yes, you want to kill us, and we have no ability to resist. But let's be clear, we have an agreement between us. You can't break this rule. If you kill us without evidence proving we are the ones who did it, who will listen to your Purgatory Palace in the future?"
Black Eyes stared at Dong Qin with a glint in his eyes. "I didn't expect you to be so articulate! So tell me, if it wasn't you who killed, then who did? The only place near the Dragon God Tree cave is Shangyu Village. Don't tell me it was some other village that killed and dragged the bodies from afar to frame you!"
Faced with this question, Dong Qin was at a loss for words. Earlier, she had instructed Ji Zichen and Xia Zhou to hide the bodies in the cave out of desperation. Her original plan was to temporarily conceal the bodies there and move them to a more distant hiding place when night fell. She never expected they would be discovered so quickly.
Seeing that Dong Qin had nothing to say, Black Eyes coldly stated, "What? No response? To prevent this from happening again, whoever killed should step forward quickly; otherwise, I'll execute the village chief on the spot!"
Dong Qin's face changed dramatically. "You can't harm the village chief!"
Xia Zhou gritted his teeth and said, "I knew it! That cave isn't safe; it must have been discovered."
Ji Zichen sighed and added, "There was no other way. If we had wandered around with two bodies, we would have been found out even sooner."
"That's too much!" Taking advantage of Ji Zichen and Xia Zhou's distraction, a young boy managed to slip away from Ji Zichen's light hold and ran out.
Just as Xia Zhou was about to chase after him, Ji Zichen pressed him down. "We can't reveal ourselves; doing so would be like admitting we killed him."
Though anxious, Xia Zhou realized she was right. After all, they were outsiders; if they showed themselves, the villagers might be blamed for harboring fugitives.
Despite their youth, seeing the village chief in danger made them forget their own safety. As he ran towards the drying ground, he was already panting heavily.
Reaching Dong Qin, he angrily pointed at Black Eyes. "Let go of the village chief! Sister Nine, as long as we pay on time, you can't come to harass us!"
Seeing a young boy shouting at him, Black Eyes looked coldly at him. "Where did this little ghost come from?" He swept his gaze over the villagers. "How dare you speak like that? Have you paid on time? You Shangyu Village really are something; even a kid dares to talk back to me."
"It seems we have made your lives too comfortable. Let me tell you, Sister Nine is just a pawn! In Purgatory Palace, she is nothing!"
The village chief was held in mid-air by Black Eyes, stammering, "You... don't act impulsively... no... don't come closer... people from Purgatory Palace have died nearby... this is my failure... my fault..."
The villagers present were filled with indignation, each one gritting their teeth and clenching their fists in anger.
Black Eyes coldly replied, "A failure? Now that you admit your mistake, do you think I will let you go?"
With three fingers gripping the village chief, Black Eyes suddenly kicked him in the abdomen. The chief's body flew into a nearby pavilion with a crash, and the pavilion collapsed, trapping him beneath it.
Everyone present was taken aback. Dong Qin moved to step forward, but Black Eyes shouted, "Stop! Anyone who dares to move will die!"
At that moment, despite their anger, the villagers dared not act recklessly.
Black Eyes understood his own strength; he could have easily killed the village chief with a single blow. However, he was not here for mere amusement; he wanted the villagers to feel genuine fear towards Purgatory Palace deep in their hearts.
Raising his voice, Black Eyes declared, "I am sparing you for your own good. Resisting us is futile." He signaled to his two subordinates, "Drag him out."
The two subordinates approached the collapsed pavilion and pulled the village chief out. At that moment, he was covered in blood and dazed, shaking his fist and shouting, "You bastard!"
He seemed ready to throw a punch at Black Eyes but was held back by Dong Qin. Seeing the young boy still standing firm and not completely terrified on the ground intrigued Black Eyes. "You're not bad for a little ghost; you still have some spirit. But take one more step forward, and I will kill everyone in this village."
The thought of the entire village being slaughtered sent chills through him. "Y-You dare!"
Though the village chief was disoriented, he still cared about the safety of his villagers. He stammered, "Qin... watch... carefully... don't let anyone come closer."
Before he could finish speaking, he trembled as he knelt before Black Eyes and pleaded, "Don't hurt anyone... If killing me will satisfy you... then go ahead and kill me... but you cannot harm them."
Black Eyes' gaze was filled with coldness as he declared, "Of course you must die! This is the punishment I have for you!"
At that moment, Black Eyes' eyes glinted with malice as he raised his hand, unleashing a powerful strike aimed directly at the village chief.
Seeing the village chief on the brink of death, Ji Zichen felt an urgent voice within him urging him to reveal himself. In a flash, Ji Zichen's water droplets darkened, and a Water Rope shot forth like lightning, wrapping around the village chief's ankle and pulling him several feet away. Turning to Xia Zhou, Ji Zichen said, "Don't reveal yourself; we can't expose everyone!"
As soon as Ji Zichen finished speaking, he dashed towards the roof.
Initially taken aback, Black Eyes watched as the Water Rope whisked the village chief away. However, one of his subordinates shouted, pointing at the rooftop where Ji Zichen was hiding. "There's someone up there!"
Ji Zichen leaped several times, landing on the nearest rooftop to the drying area and boldly declared, "It was I who killed him!"
Upon seeing Ji Zichen, Black Eyes let out a rare, hearty laugh. "So it's you! How dare these Vile People kill anyone in my presence."
Ji Zichen was astonished. "You know me?"
With a cold smile, Black Eyes replied, "I know you, but you may not know me. You must have seen my Ghost Howl Order, right?"
Suddenly, Ji Zichen gasped in realization. "It's you! The one who took Lin Chuyu!"
Black Eyes chuckled darkly. "Very good, Ji Zichen, you've finally arrived."
