Chapter 6: The Stillness of Double Image
Before Cheng Gangzhu could teach himself a lesson, Fire Lion took the initiative to strike first. With a stomp of his Red Boots, Fire Lion unleashed the Spinning Lion Claw. As his left foot lifted off the ground, his right foot swept through the air, instantly creating dozens of lion claw Double Images. Seeing the myriad of claw images rushing toward him, Cheng Gangzhu felt no fear. With a flick of his Fox Spines, he effortlessly dispelled Fire Lion's assault in the blink of an eye.
Cheng Gangzhu smirked, "I didn't expect your boots to have this trick up their sleeve besides just running away."
Lin Chuyu watched in astonishment. "None of those Double Images hit him."
Xia Zhou remained silent, assessing the situation. "No matter how many Double Images there are, it's difficult to land a hit on Cheng Gangzhu. His Fox Spines provide tight protection with no gaps at all."
While keeping an eye on Fire Lion, Cheng Gangzhu also remained wary of Ji Zichen from the corner of his eye. He was cautious of Ji Zichen's Demon-Slaying Sword and feared a sudden attack.
At that moment, Mad Bull unexpectedly glanced at Ji Zichen and asked, "What kind of sword is that? I've never seen anyone cut through Fox Spines with any weapon before."
Xia Zhou chimed in with admiration, "Your sword is impressive."
Ji Zichen fixed his intense gaze on the Demon-Slaying Sword and replied, "It truly is powerful."
Qin Feng turned to Mad Bull and remarked, "You didn't run away."
Mad Bull laughed wildly at Qin Feng. "Why would I run? Don't you secretly wish I would follow you?"
Qin Feng chuckled in response. "I indeed thought so. Cheng Gangzhu, you have some skills. Care for a little competition?"
Mad Bull sneered, "I never compete with anyone unless you want to die."
Qin Feng burst into loud laughter. "Mad Bull, your confidence is quite over the top."
Mad Bull scoffed, "If you don't believe me, just give it a try."
Qin Feng shot a glance at Mad Bull and smiled, "Then let me see what you can do!"
With a flick of his wrist, Qin Feng swung his nunchaku towards Mad Bull. Mad Bull snorted coldly and leaped off his horse, landing three yards away. "Honestly, I don't want to fight you," he said.
Qin Feng turned his horse around and laughed, "What's wrong? Are you scared?"
Mad Bull chuckled lightly, "Just hold on tight; don't fall off your horse."
With a shake of his hands, Mad Bull revealed a pair of Ox Rings that slid down from both sides. Ji Zichen noticed that Mad Bull wore one Ox Ring on each hand; these rings were similar to bracelets but were black in color. Ji Zichen said, "Let's keep our distance; they're about to make their move."
Cheng Gangzhu observed the standoff between Qin Feng and Mad Bull and glanced at Fire Lion with a grin. "Who do you think will win?"
Fire Lion didn't look at Mad Bull; instead, he fixed his intense gaze on Cheng Gangzhu. "I certainly hope all your subordinates meet their end," he replied.
Cheng Gangzhu laughed heartily. "Then let's see who has the best luck between us."
At that moment, Xia Zhou asked Ji Zichen, "Who do you want to help now?"
After observing for a while, Ji Zichen replied, "There's no rush to help. The best way to catch prey is to let them exhaust themselves first. We can't keep up with Fire Lion's Red Boots."
Xia Zhou nodded in agreement and fell silent.
Qin Feng focused on the Ox Rings on Mad Bull's wrists. "Is this your weapon? You can't be thinking of using these two broken rings against me, right?"
"Look down on it, and you might regret it when it's dead," Mad Bull said with a heavy smile.
With both hands raised, the Ox Rings shot out a Double Image towards Qin Feng at high speed. Qin Feng smiled slowly and swung his Nine-section Staff, summoning three wolf illusions that charged at Mad Bull with their jaws wide open.
The three wolves came rushing from the front and sides. Mad Bull retracted the attacking Ox Rings and swept them horizontally towards the three wolves. The Ox Rings and Double Image struck the wolves, which let out a mournful cry before vanishing.
Mad Bull twisted his wrist, sending the Ox Rings flying even faster towards Qin Feng. Qin Feng raised his Nine-section Staff just in time to intercept the incoming Ox Rings. Xia Zhou couldn't help but exclaim, "Look at that Ox Rings Double Image!"
Ji Zichen frowned slightly, saying, "That Double Image hasn't disappeared."
Normally, the Double Image would be an afterimage left by the moving Ox Rings, but now both the Ox Rings and Nine-section Staff were frozen in place. Mad Bull was three zhang away from Qin Feng, with his hands raised in front of him. The Double Image of the Ox Rings appeared as if it were a three-zhang-long weapon, colliding and remaining still against the Nine-section Staff.
Mad Bull's thick brows furrowed; what had been a stationary Double Image suddenly twisted and stretched like a released spring, scattering into multiple shadows that surged towards Qin Feng from all directions. Although there were many Double Images, they were continuous. Qin Feng's eyes sparkled as he shouted, "It's here!"
Sitting on his horse, Qin Feng slightly raised his Nine-section Staff, which hovered right in front of his forehead while the scattered Ox Rings Double Images remained suspended in mid-air.
Xia Zhou called out urgently, "The Double Images aren't moving!"
Ji Zichen focused intently and was immensely impressed by Qin Feng's keen insight. She exclaimed, "What incredible vision! He can see the center point of the scattered Double Images!"
Mad Bull felt a chill run down his spine, astonished beyond belief. "How is this possible? How can he see the center point amidst such chaotic Double Images?"
The scattered Double Images resembled a tangled ball of yarn thrown into disarray, yet Qin Feng's gaze pierced through it like a beacon, identifying the single leading thread.
The attack pattern of the scattered Double Images was designed to obscure vision and catch opponents off guard for a surprise attack. Mad Bull had initially believed he could strike down his enemy in one blow, but now he appeared flustered. In a fit of rage, he shouted, "Impossible! It's just your luck!"
Double Image was in motion, and Qin Feng's eyes flickered. In the blink of an eye, he determined the center point of Double Image once again. At that moment, the center point of Double Image was to the left of Qin Feng. With a swift movement of his Nine-section Staff, Double Image came to a halt.
Qin Feng chuckled, "Mad Bull, you're not so impressive after all."
As Qin Feng rolled his Nine-section Staff at the center point, the entire still Double Image began to writhe. With a swing of his staff, the Double Image retaliated towards Mad Bull. Startled, Mad Bull quickly leaped aside, as the Double Images crashed to the ground, leaving deep gouges in their wake.
Xia Zhou exclaimed in disbelief, "No way! He can actually counterattack using the opponent's own attack style!"
Seeing the deep marks left by the falling Double Images, Qin Feng remarked in surprise, "Huh, these seemingly light Double Images actually have such force? Your attack is quite brutal for a Double Image."
Lin Chuyu chimed in with astonishment, "Ah? I get it now! The attack from Double Image relies on this center point. As long as the opponent can't discern its location, this center point can carry other Double Images to strike simultaneously. His eyesight is so sharp!"
Ji Zichen added, "Exactly! This method of attack is indeed mind-boggling. But as long as you find the center point, this kind of attack can be countered by the opponent. However, if it were me, I wouldn't be able to spot that center point in an instant."
Mad Bull stood several yards away amidst the deep marks on the ground, panting heavily and glaring at Qin Feng with a face full of resentment. Qin Feng smirked and said, "Your artifact is like a child's toy—just a tangled mess. How do you expect to defeat me with something like that?"
Mad Bull's eyes turned red as he retorted, "This is not just a toy! This is a gift my brother risked his life to find for me! I've survived until now thanks to this artifact. I never expected you could..."
Qin Feng paused in surprise. "Your brother?" Then he nodded and said, "It's not surprising that you have siblings; I just didn't expect someone like you would have a brother."
Mad Bull recalled his older brother. When Mad Bull was five years old, his brother was two years older than him. The two brothers had struggled to survive alone in Yellow Sand Plain. One day, Mad Bull's brother heard about a relic in Yellow Sand Plain from a disciple of The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant.
At that time, they certainly wouldn't seek out the relic themselves; instead, they waited for this disciple to enter the relic and retrieve the Ox Rings artifact before secretly killing him while he slept. After stealing the Ox Rings artifact, Mad Bull's brother gave it to him.
His brother had told him, "Don't be afraid; with this artifact, no one will dare bully you anymore."
Mad Bull felt a deep fear as he witnessed his older brother commit murder. "Brother, we've killed someone. The Corner Lodge will send soldiers after us," he said.
His brother laughed, "What are you afraid of? Once we bury him, no one will know. You take this magical artifact with you; I'll find another for myself. That way, no one will dare to bully us, and we won't have to go hungry anymore."
"But this magical artifact isn't worth much if we sell it," Mad Bull replied.
His brother patted him on the shoulder and smiled, "Who said anything about selling it? We need to hold onto the artifact and become the most powerful people in Yellow Sand Plain. Then we can..."
Before his brother could finish, Mad Bull saw a Sharp Sword pierce through his brother's chest. The color drained from Mad Bull's face as he noticed the disciple his brother had killed standing behind him, the sword clearly coming from that disciple.
The disciple glared at Mad Bull, blood pouring from his own wound. "Good! If my heart hadn't been half an inch longer than usual, I would have almost died at your hands!"
With a swift motion, the disciple pulled out the sword, and Mad Bull's brother collapsed to the ground with a thud. "Brother!" Mad Bull cried out in anguish.
Seeing these two young boys daring to take a life filled the disciple with murderous intent. He glared fiercely at them and declared, "To be so young yet already commit such crimes! If I don't kill you now, you'll surely turn against me in the future!"
As Mad Bull wept bitterly, the disciple felt no sympathy. He raised his sword and said, "Don't cry! You'll see your brother soon enough!"
With a clang, the disciple lunged at Mad Bull with his sword. Stunned by his brother's death, Mad Bull was momentarily dazed. Just as the sword was inches away from him, he heard a chilling sound emanating from the Ox Rings on his wrist—a warning that only he could hear, signaling that the artifact had recognized its master.
Following the guidance of the Ox Rings, Mad Bull raised both hands toward the disciple. A Double Image shot forth from the Ox Rings. The disciple was caught completely off guard by this sudden change; the Double Image struck him and overwhelmed him in an instant, reducing his body to countless fragments.
Mad Bull's thoughts raced like lightning as he processed what had just happened. With renewed determination, he shouted at Qin Feng, "This is no mere object; it's a magical artifact my brother sacrificed his life for! I will not allow you to insult it like this!"
