Chapter 1: The Struggle for the Dan Ding
Yu Ren was shocked; no one noticed how Ma Tongwei had moved behind Jiang Chun. Ji Zichen was equally surprised. Despite Ma Tongwei's large stature, he moved swiftly.
"Such incredible speed!" Ji Zichen exclaimed.
Xia Zhou, though injured, wore a faint smile. "It's the Flying Rainbow Axe. Ma Tongwei used the rainbow line of the axe to maneuver around him."
Jiang Chun gritted his teeth. "Another strange artifact."
Though Jiang Chun was furious at being restrained, he dared not make a move. Ma Tongwei spoke boldly, "You're not bad, Zhuque Chenjing. It's quite calm here, and usually, no one comes to kill me. I honestly feel that using this Flying Rainbow Axe isn't as effortless as it used to be; I'm a bit out of practice."
Ma Tongwei continued coldly, "That said, I'm still very confident in my ability to kill you."
At this moment, Zhu Qi no longer underestimated Ma Tongwei. Internally, Zhu Qi felt both incredulous and extremely uneasy. Zhu Qi thought to himself, "This is the first time I've seen Jiang Chun being restrained."
The Elder also looked at Ma Tongwei in astonishment. "The last time I saw him slaughtering indiscriminately, I didn't expect he had such refined movement techniques."
Xia Zhou had complete confidence in Ma Tongwei and spoke with unusual steadiness and strength. "You have no chance now. The Flying Rainbow Axe can not only cleave someone in two but also allows Ma Tongwei to move quickly along the rainbow line. Even if there were more of you, he could kill you without you even noticing."
The Elder then said solemnly, "Zhu Qi, Mo Cang, Jiang Chun, and Ling Xuan, do you see now? The Western King wants to provoke a conflict with such a deity. Now you understand why I opposed this matter. The Western King has been in the city too long; he has completely forgotten what battle is."
Zhu Qi took a deep breath. The Elder was right; the artifacts of the divine race were indeed very peculiar. This one before them was merely a commander; who knew what kind of shocking artifacts higher-level deities possessed? Opposing the divine race was truly a perilous affair.
At this moment, Jiang Chun's face was filled with despair as he was restrained. Listening to the Elder praise the divine race only made him more furious. Jiang Chun bared his teeth and said, "Elder! At this point, are you still boosting their morale? Hurry up and think of a way to save me!"
Ma Tongwei seemed to hear a delightful joke. "Save you? No one can save you now; your only option is to compromise."
The Elder asked, "Compromise? What do you want us to compromise on?"
Ma Tongwei suddenly sighed. "The environment can indeed change a person's character. Staying in Zhuque Chenjing for too long seems to have improved my temper quite a bit. I'll give you half an hour; all of you must leave here and hand over the Six-Yao Lantern Formation. If you agree, I can guarantee that you'll leave without any harm."
"Elder," he sneered, "if we don't agree..."
Ma Tongwei chuckled darkly. "Then we'll kill all of you!"
"Elder" laughed coldly. "We are leaving, but the Divine Race Undead is ours for sure."
"Elder" raised his voice. "Don't let him scare you; we have our own magical artifacts."
At that moment, Zhu Qi felt a surge of confidence and tightly gripped the Burial Sun Blade. "That's right. If they flaunt their magical artifacts and we bow down, how will we face others when we go out?"
Ma Tongwei's expression turned grim as he addressed Jiang Chun. "They don't care about your life; you have no friends. What meaning does your existence hold? Why not let me send you on your way?"
The Flying Rainbow Axe moved, ready to slice across Jiang Chun's neck.
"Wait... wait!" Jiang Chun suddenly shouted in panic. "Elder! You heartless scoundrel! I risked my life for you, and you dare treat me like this!"
Jiang Chun pleaded, "Ma Tongwei, let me go, and I'll tell you where the Six-Yao Lantern Formation is!"
Elder's face darkened with anger. "You dare!"
After a moment of contemplation, Ma Tongwei pushed Jiang Chun away. "I’m not afraid of your tricks."
Jiang Chun immediately stepped back several paces from Ma Tongwei, touching his still-cool neck. "Thank you for sparing my life, Ma Tongwei."
Ma Tongwei replied coldly, "I'm not sparing you out of kindness. Now tell me where the Six-Yao Lantern Formation is."
Jiang Chun pointed at Zhu Qi and coldly glared at Elder. "The Wraith has already been captured in the Dan Ding; we've used one, and there are two Dan Dings remaining with Zhu Qi."
Everyone turned their gaze toward Zhu Qi simultaneously.
Zhu Qi was furious. "Jiang Chun!"
Jiang Chun shouted hoarsely, "You can't blame me for this! It was Elder who acted unjustly towards me!"
From the expressions on both sides, it was clear that Jiang Chun was not lying. Ma Tongwei smiled at Jiang Chun and said, "You still have some credibility. Since you've spoken the truth, I won't make things difficult for you. You can leave."
Jiang Chun glanced at everyone and turned to leave immediately. However, he wasn't heading back to the camp; he had no reason to return there. Instead, he made his way toward the exit.
Elder never expected things to escalate to this point. Now that they had already torn off their masks, if Jiang Chun were to leave, who knew what he might do with the Western King?
Elder immediately shouted, "Stop him! We can't let him go!"
Ma Tongwei hoisted the Flying Rainbow Axe onto his shoulder and stood alone in Jiang Chun's path. He had no intention of backing down; his actions were clear. If Elder wanted to pursue Jiang Chun, he would have to get past Ma Tongwei first. Ma Tongwei looked at Xia Zhou with a heavy smile and said, "Xia Zhou, I'm not here to help you. Show me what you've got; let's see if you've made any progress over the years."
Xia Zhou snorted, "I don't need your help."
Ma Tongwei smiled without replying. He walked toward the wall where the box was lodged. He had already seen the box embedded in the rock and recognized it as Xia Zhou's needle box. Although it was stuck deep into the wall, Ma Tongwei easily pulled it out with a single grab and shouted, "Catch!"
He tossed the box to Xia Zhou and added, "Xia Zhou, you owe me one now!"
Xia Zhou caught the box and tucked it into his clothes. As he turned back, it felt like a renowned swordsman's blade returning to hand, filling him with boundless fighting spirit. He looked gratefully at Ma Tongwei and said, "Don't worry; I'll repay you well."
Mo Cang declared, "Even if you throw all your needles at me, I won't be afraid!"
With a swift movement, Mo Cang lunged forward with his claws aimed at Xia Zhou. A victorious smile appeared on Xia Zhou's face as he said, "Charging in recklessly? You're asking for death!"
Unfazed, Mo Cang swung his claws at Xia Zhou with incredible speed. "Die!"
In an instant, Xia Zhou grasped four wild needles in both hands and shouted fiercely, "Eight Directions Blockade!"
Eight Desolation Needles shot out simultaneously. At that moment, Xia Zhou did not aim directly at Mo Cang; instead, he threw them upwards above his head. As the eight needles soared into the air, they fell to the ground with a whoosh, forming a circular needle barrier that enclosed Mo Cang in the center. Upon seeing this, Mo Cang's expression changed drastically. He quickly halted and was about to leap out of the needle circle with all his might.
Suddenly, there were eight loud explosions that echoed, "Boom... Boom..."
The eight needles detonated together, shaking the ground as if an earthquake had struck. Everyone staggered, struggling to maintain their balance. Mo Cang's agonized cries could be heard from within the needle circle.
Mo Cang's figure burst forth from the circle, but it was only half of him—the feline half. The other half, in human form, had been completely obliterated by the Eight Desolation Needles.
Whether human or cat, having only half a body meant certain death. The cat's body was propelled out of the circle by the force of the explosion, but it stood for just a moment before collapsing to the ground.
Elder Zhu Qi's face turned pale at the sight.
Xia Zhou turned his head and couldn't help but feel pleased with himself. With three Eight Desolation Needles pinched between his fingers, he pointed at Elder Zhu Qi and declared, "It's your turn!"
Elder Zhu Qi leaped to Zhu Qi's side and fixed a fierce gaze on Xia Zhou. "If you have the guts, come and try! I want to see if you can kill me."
Mo Cang had been killed in the explosion, infuriating Zhu Qi to the point of fury. He shouted, "I will kill you!"
Elder Zhu Qi's expression darkened as he shot an angry glare at Ling Xuan. "Even if I die today, I will drag you down with me!"
With a flick of his hand, he sent a flying knife hurtling toward Ling Xuan. Jiang Dahuzi was some distance away and couldn't rush to help in time. He yelled, "Ling Xuan! Get out of the way!"
Just as Ling Xuan showed no reaction, the flying knife was already close to her face. Elder Zhu Qi laughed maniacally, "Want to dodge? It's too late!"
In that moment, Ling Xuan saw a sword appear before her eyes. With a clang, the flying knife struck against the blade—it was none other than the Demon-Slaying Sword—causing the knife to bounce off and hit the ground.
Zhu Qi was taken aback. "This kid is fast!"
Ling Xuan suppressed her fear and managed a wry smile. "You saved me once again."
Ji Zichen was about to speak when Ling Xuan lightly pressed down on his wrist with two fingers. Ji Zichen retracted the Demon-Slaying Sword, and Ling Xuan stepped forward, saying, "Elder, it's time to stop. You’re not foolish; you must see that you have no chance of winning now."
The Elder scoffed, "Stop? After knowing me for this long, do you really think I'm the type to back down from a challenge?"
Ling Xuan sighed and replied, "I know you are relentless in pursuing your goals. You may not care about your own life, but what about Zhu Qi? You’ve already caused Mo Cang's death."
The Elder glanced at Zhu Qi, his compound eyes fixed on Ling Xuan. "What are you trying to do, sow discord between us?"
Ling Xuan's gaze fell on Zhu Qi as she continued, "Zhu Qi, the Elder rebelled against the Western King to avenge his daughter. What about you? What are your motives? If it’s for wealth, no matter how much the Elder promises you, I can guarantee double from the Western King."
There was no affection between Zhu Qi and the Elder; only interests were at play. Zhu Qi retorted, "Are you trying to buy me off?"
Ling Xuan responded, "What? Aren't you in it for the money?"
Zhu Qi replied, "I am in it for the money, but how do I know you won’t betray me once I cross the river?"
From the incident with Jiang Chun, Zhu Qi had already realized that in the Elder's eyes, they were nothing—less than a stinking rat. However, Ling Xuan was no saint either, which prompted Zhu Qi's question.
Since Zhu Qi had asked that question, it was clear she was slightly swayed. Ling Xuan said, "You know that the Western King only cares about results. If you hand over the Dan Ding that contains the Wraith to me, I will inform the Western King of your contributions. You know I keep my word."
Zhu Qi understood Ling Xuan well; although she was a woman, she never went back on her promises.
Zhu Qi began to consider Ling Xuan's proposal in her heart. The Elder's gaze was heavy as he stared at Zhu Qi; his sword had subtly shifted a few inches closer to her. As soon as Zhu Qi dared to take out the Dan Ding, the Elder would be ready to reclaim it in an instant.
