Chapter 9 Flying Rainbow Axe
Mo Cang missed his strike, crouching like a cat with his limbs on the ground. He sighed inwardly, "What a guy, he got away."
Xia Zhou was pulled aside and let out a muffled groan before slowly getting up. Ji Zichen called out to Xia Zhou, "Don't let your guard down!"
Xia Zhou nodded at Ji Zichen.
The Elder looked at Ji Zichen and said, "You are more difficult to deal with than I imagined."
Xia Zhou focused intently on Mo Cang, thinking, "That was close. If I had been hit by those hundred claws, I would have been shredded to pieces."
Mo Cang chuckled, "You escaped once, but I won't let you slip away a second time."
Xia Zhou was skilled in throwing needles, which meant he was not adept in close combat. It was clear that Mo Cang excelled in melee. Xia Zhou thought to himself, "I only have two needles left. If I can't kill him before using them up, then I'll be the one who dies."
Mo Cang's half-human, half-cat form was even more grotesque than that of a Demon Beast. With a flick of his claws, he lunged at Xia Zhou. Xia Zhou could only defend with his needles. After exchanging several blows, Ling Xuan observed the situation and said, "This is bad; he's being overwhelmed by Mo Cang."
At this point, Mo Cang realized Xia Zhou's true strength and arrogantly declared, "Without the Eight Desolation Needles, you're nothing special."
Xia Zhou struggled to keep up but maintained a serious expression as he replied, "I think we're not that different."
Mo Cang's eyes sparkled with malice as he locked gazes with Xia Zhou. While attacking, he laughed lightly, "Just boasting."
Seeing that Mo Cang had turned his back to her, Ling Xuan glanced at the broken sword in her hand. Although this method wasn't honorable, she couldn't afford to hesitate now. Without any delay, she concentrated her inner strength and hurled the broken sword toward him.
Mo Cang sensed a chill approaching from behind and swiftly pivoted to the left. In his attack, he inadvertently pulled Xia Zhou back to his original position. Ling Xuan gasped in shock and shouted, "Watch out!"
At that moment, Xia Zhou suddenly felt a jolt of energy. He pushed off the ground with his foot and quickly distanced himself from Mo Cang just as Ling Xuan's broken sword whizzed through the air where they had just stood.
Mo Cang suddenly threw his head back and laughed loudly, "Ling Xuan, do you want to kill me or him?"
Xia Zhou knew that Ling Xuan intended to help him, but he couldn't let her interfere. He shouted at Ling Xuan, "Don't get in the way!"
Ling Xuan had meant well but ended up making things worse. She had no words to refute Xia Zhou's accusation.
In that brief moment when Xia Zhou shouted at Ling Xuan, Mo Cang seized the opportunity and declared, "There's a flaw!"
Mo Cang thought to himself, "If I don't hurt you this time, I'll write my name backwards."
With a swipe of his claws, Xia Zhou threw out a set of Eight Desolation Needles. Seeing the needles flying swiftly towards him, Mo Cang planted his feet firmly. The Eight Desolation Needles exploded just three yards away from him, but Mo Cang had already moved out of the explosion's range in advance. He crouched low and charged towards Xia Zhou with the speed of thunder.
Xia Zhou used the smoke from the explosion to obscure his vision. The ability of the Eight Desolation Needles to explode was an advantage for him, but the resulting dust cloud was its weakness. He had never considered that someone could evade the blast radius beforehand.
Mo Cang rushed in from the side of the explosion, and Xia Zhou was caught completely off guard. Suddenly, everything went dark before his eyes. When he finally saw who it was, Mo Cang's claw had already slashed across Xia Zhou's chest. Xia Zhou let out a pained cry and clutched his chest as he stumbled backward.
At that moment, Jiang Dahuzi struck Zhu Qi's Burial Sun Blade aside with a palm. Zhu Qi laughed gleefully and said, "Why are you all hitting your own people?"
Jiang Dahuzi remained unfazed; he recognized Zhu Qi's taunts were meant to distract him. He wasn't fooled, but he had witnessed what happened to Xia Zhou.
Ling Xuan had made a mistake once and now sought a way to remedy it. In reality, she was merely a bystander at this point; without her physical body to control, her close combat abilities were even weaker than Xia Zhou's.
However, she couldn't just stand by doing nothing. Looking at Xia Zhou, she said, "Although I don't know what their intentions are in helping me, they have come for my sake. I can't just stand here and watch him die for nothing."
Ling Xuan's gaze fell on the Eight Desolation Box embedded in the mountainside. She thought to herself, "If I can retrieve the box and hand it over to him, he will surely be able to defeat Mo Cang."
With determination in her heart, she stealthily moved towards the mountainside where the box was trapped. Elder was closest to Ling Xuan and had already noticed her sneaking away. He had known Ling Xuan for quite some time and understood that she wasn't someone who would flee out of fear for her life. He wondered to himself, "What does she intend to do?"
Just then, Ji Zichen swung her Demon-Slaying Sword fiercely, interrupting Elder's thoughts. Elder focused his mind back on Ji Zichen and prepared to confront her attack.
At this moment, there was another observer present, just like Ling Xuan, and that person was Jiang Chun. Jiang Chun's eyes were fixed on Ling Xuan's every move. When Jiang Chun realized the direction Ling Xuan intended to go, a faint smile appeared on her face. "So you want to grab the box. Ling Xuan, you really don't take me seriously."
As Ling Xuan reached the cliff face and her hand brushed against the box, she suddenly felt a dark shadow looming behind her. Jiang Chun lunged forward with a dagger aimed at the back of Ling Xuan's neck. To protect herself, Ling Xuan had no choice but to let go and dodge. She bent down to evade Jiang Chun's strike and retreated several paces away.
Jiang Chun chuckled softly. "Focus on yourself first; you still want to help others."
Ling Xuan gritted her teeth in anger. "I really regret not seeing your malicious intentions sooner!"
Jiang Chun smiled lightly. "Ling Xuan, I have no personal vendetta against you. This is all for a reason; you can only blame yourself for getting in Elder's way."
Jiang Chun tightened her grip on the dagger, preparing to attack, but before she did, she said, "Ling Xuan, I've already let you live a little longer. Your reinforcements are busy now; it's time to deal with you."
A chill ran down Ling Xuan's spine. "Even if I become a ghost, I won't let you off!"
Jiang Chun coldly laughed. "Then consider yourself a ghost when you come back to settle the score with me!"
With a flick of her wrist, Jiang Chun sent the dagger slicing through the air, aimed directly at Ling Xuan's heart.
Ling Xuan was startled and retreated several steps. Just as Jiang Chun's dagger was mere inches from her chest, she sensed an overwhelming force coming from above. Looking up, she saw an axe descending towards her.
Suddenly jolted by fear, Jiang Chun had no time to ponder why the axe was falling; she quickly retreated.
As Ling Xuan stepped back, she felt herself collide with something thick and oppressive that felt like a wall. But how could there be a wall here?
"Wait, this isn't a wall," Ling Xuan thought to herself. "Walls don't have temperature," yet the thing behind her did.
Before she could turn around, she saw Ma Tongwei had circled in front of her. His voice boomed like thunder as he declared, "So it’s you two fighting here! No wonder it’s so noisy! Anyone who dares challenge the divine clan will die!"
Ling Xuan glanced at Ma Tongwei and immediately recognized him. Jiang Chun did not know Ma Tongwei since they hadn’t encountered him during their feigned ambush. Although Jiang Chun had never seen Ma Tongwei before, his unexpected arrival made her feel quite uneasy.
Ling Xuan looked up at Ma Tongwei and said, "It's you. You're the one who led the attack on the camp."
Ma Tongwei was tall and turned to look at Ling Xuan, asking, "Who are you?" Although Ma Tongwei had personally led the assault that day, Ling Xuan had not shown herself, so Ma Tongwei did not recognize her. However, she was aware of the attack on the camp and knew that Jiang Chun wanted to kill Ling Xuan. Given the current situation with the enemy, it seemed that this Ling Xuan was not one of theirs; otherwise, why would they want to kill her?
Being new to the situation, Ma Tongwei found it difficult to ascertain identities quickly. They could either be enemies or friends, so she asked Ling Xuan without hostility.
Though Ling Xuan had not revealed herself that day, she could see from the scholar's eyes that Ma Tongwei was fierce. If she were to reveal her identity now, it was likely that Ma Tongwei would cleave her head off with a single strike.
Ma Tongwei's Flying Rainbow Axe was hovering near Ling Xuan's left ear, and she could feel the intense chill emanating from it.
At that moment, due to Ma Tongwei's arrival, everyone stopped their actions, and all eyes turned to her.
Seeing that Ling Xuan's gaze shifted and she did not answer her question, Ma Tongwei shouted angrily, "Why aren't you speaking? Are you one of them?"
With a swing of her Flying Rainbow Axe, it looked as if she was about to strike down at Ling Xuan.
Just then, Ji Zichen was about to speak when Xia Zhou clutched his chest and gritted his teeth in pain, shouting loudly, "Stop! She is not an enemy!"
Ma Tongwei looked at Xia Zhou and saw that he had been injured on his chest. Her brow furrowed slightly, but then she sneered coldly. "I didn't expect you would let these humans injure you. Xia Zhou, you've truly embarrassed the divine race."
Jiang Chun was closest to Ma Tongwei and felt her overwhelming pressure more acutely than anyone else. It felt as if a heavy stone pressed against his chest; he had no choice but to speak up to relieve this pressure.
Struggling against the weight of Ma Tongwei's presence, Jiang Chun managed to ask, "Who are you?"
Ma Tongwei fixed a heavy gaze on Jiang Chun. "Who am I? You don't have the right to ask that. If you don't want me to take action, then end your own life. I really don't want to kill someone who can't even fight back."
Ma Tongwei's disdain for Jiang Chun ignited his fury. "How dare you look at me like that!"
Ma Tongwei smirked. "It seems you want to experience the power of my Flying Rainbow Axe."
Jiang Chun felt a surge of anger rising within him, and it was not the time to show weakness. He stared directly at Ma Tongwei, speaking with neither humility nor arrogance, "The name of the divine clan doesn't intimidate me! This Zhuque Chenjing is nothing like the outside world; it is incredibly tranquil here. Unlike you, who enjoys a life of luxury, I am someone who has lived on the edge of a blade. How could you possibly kill me so easily?"
Ma Tongwei's sudden arrival did catch Elder and the others off guard for a moment, but now that it was just Ma Tongwei without any reinforcements, it made little difference to them—one more person or one less person was the same.
At this moment, Elder Yu Renxin's anger gradually stabilized. Jiang Chun was right; they had faced death many times before. As long as they joined forces to confront the enemy, it would be difficult for anyone to easily defeat them.
Jiang Chun coldly declared, "You dare come here alone to cause trouble? Let's see how much you can handle!"
With his dagger firmly in hand, Jiang Chun shouted, "Dual Dagger Flow!"
He slashed with his dagger, and a large shadow of a dagger flew out, resembling a massive surge of fighting spirit as it rushed toward Ma Tongwei.
Ma Tongwei chuckled deeply. The Flying Rainbow Axe in his hand displayed vibrant rainbow patterns that surged forward like fighting spirit in response.
The two forces collided, erupting in a dazzling display of colors.
As the colorful light dissipated, Jiang Chun suddenly felt a chill run down his spine—Ma Tongwei was no longer in front of him.
At that moment, the Flying Rainbow Axe was already pressed against Jiang Chun's neck. He felt a rush of blood as Ma Tongwei hooked his arm around Jiang Chun's neck while holding the axe at his side. Ma Tongwei's deep voice resonated in Jiang Chun's ear as he provocatively laughed, "Who is it that enjoys a life of luxury now?"
