Chapter 194: The Thoughts of the Western King
Ji Zichen was the first to return to the gathering point. After waiting for half a day, Xia Zhou was the first to come back.
It wasn't until the Serpent Bat Dragon landed beside Ji Zichen that he snapped out of his thoughts. He had been pondering what they intended to do with the Divine Race Undead. As Xia Zhou dismounted from the Serpent Bat Dragon and noticed Ji Zichen lost in thought, he hadn't yet spoken to him, but it seemed he understood why Ji Zichen was in such a state.
"What are you thinking about?" Xia Zhou asked.
Ji Zichen suddenly came back to reality. "Ah, you're back," he said, looking slightly startled, as if he hadn't expected Xia Zhou to return so soon.
Xia Zhou chuckled. "Of course I came back; otherwise, how could you see me?"
Xia Zhou looked into the distance, his gaze fixed on the destination that had once belonged to him. At that moment, his expression turned pale, as if he had suddenly lost all color. Anxiously, he asked, "Did you see the Six Yao Lantern Formation?"
Ji Zichen stared at Xia Zhou in disbelief. "You know that's the Six Yao Lantern Formation?"
Xia Zhou nodded in response but showed no emotion on his face. "The Six Yao Lantern Formation is a summoning array of the divine race; of course I know that. But how did those people know to set up this lantern formation?"
Ji Zichen's eyes were filled with confusion. "Maybe they saw it in some ancient texts? Regardless of how they found out, that's not important anymore. What matters is why they are summoning spirits? What do they want with the Divine Race Undead?"
Xia Zhou also felt puzzled. "If it were the divine race summoning spirits to send Wraiths home, that would be understandable. But what do those people want with Wraiths? I can't figure it out. No matter their intentions, I must retrieve the Six Yao Lantern Formation. Even though they are dead, they were still part of the divine race; I can't let those people use their Wraiths as they please."
"Send them home?" Ji Zichen initially felt very confused, but upon hearing those words, unease filled his eyes. He couldn't help but exclaim, "Could it be that they want to use the Wraiths' essence to sense the location of the rift? If so, they could open the rift!"
Ji Zichen's speculation surprised Xia Zhou, but it was indeed quite plausible. Xia Zhou exclaimed in astonishment, "What would they want to open the rift for?"
Ji Zichen attempted to analyze further. "There are places within the rift where Demon Beasts can cultivate, but they are not Demon Beasts. They wouldn't want to open the rift just for cultivation; another purpose of the rift is as a connecting passageway. Are they trying to go somewhere?"
"Go somewhere?" Xia Zhou gazed into the distance, suddenly exclaiming sharply, "Could it be that they want to ascend?"
The ideas of the two moved each other, and Ji Zichen exclaimed in shock, "What!"
At that moment, Xia Zhouyue confirmed her suspicions, and Xia Zhou sneered, "These people truly do not know their place, daring to offend the divine clan!"
Ji Zichen found the situation quite strange. "Could it be that I'm overthinking this? How could mere mortals dare to provoke your divine clan?"
Xia Zhou considered this point and then shook his head. "I don't know what benefits they think they will gain from this, but they will never win this provocation."
---
In the main camp, Ling Xuan and her group were present when the Western King learned of their achievements. He was greatly pleased and praised Ling Xuan and the Elder. However, Ling Xuan and the Elder felt some concern about the Western King's plans. The Western King reassured them not to worry too much. "If we can open the rift, we don't necessarily have to win or even fight the divine clan. While there are many magical artifacts in this world, those left behind are hardly valuable. The true treasures lie within the divine clan's stronghold. If we can obtain some of those..."
Although the Western King was not in the Vermilion Bird Territory, a young man stood before Ling Xuan and the Elder. This young man was not the scholar Ji Zichen had encountered; he was merely a vessel through which they could communicate.
When Ling Xuan learned that the Western King intended to raid the divine clan's stronghold for magical artifacts, she was shocked by his reckless idea. The Western King was not typically someone so overconfident. Ling Xuan found something odd about him but couldn't pinpoint what it was.
Ling Xuan said, "Western King, this is too risky. Give me some time; I can seek out Divine Dawn. We don’t need to provoke the divine clan actively. Even if we want to wage war, we shouldn't rely too heavily on magical artifacts' power. We have many supporters now; as long as you give the order, everyone will follow your call."
The Western King replied, "I don't need magical artifacts for war; I seek achievements beyond what ordinary people can attain."
"Indeed."
Ling Xuan and the Elder exchanged glances before stepping forward to touch the young man's forehead. He collapsed to the ground, and guards came in to carry him away.
Ling Xuan and the Elder exited the large tent and walked slowly through the camp. The Elder said, "If the rift truly opens and angers the divine clan, I fear it will bring an irreparable catastrophe to our world. We both know what provoking them entails."
Ling Xuan smiled and said, "The Western King will not change his mind. However, I never expected you to be so concerned for the common people."
The Elder's gaze dimmed as he smiled silently.
The Elder looked towards Smoothly in the distance and said, "Back when I was young, before you met the Western King, Western King City had only a wall and a Watchtower. That was all there was to Western King City."
Ling Xuan replied, "The larger the city, the more it costs."
The Elder nodded. "I still remember how troubled the Western King was over the city's finances. The higher the walls, the safer the city. Spending money to ensure safety is necessary; valuable things always come at a price."
Ling Xuan understood the importance of safety well. In the past, when Demon Beasts wreaked havoc, many low-lying cities suffered great destruction at their hands, turning into ruins.
Ling Xuan sighed and asked, "How is the progress so far?"
"Very smoothly," the Elder said, though a hint of worry crossed his weathered face. "But we still need some time. We require several Masters of Magical Artifacts working together to achieve our goal. Before we came to Vermilion Bird Territory, I thought we might not succeed, but now we have far exceeded our previous expectations."
Ling Xuan remarked, "The Western King doesn't understand magical artifacts. I don't understand how the Western King knows about this Six Yao Lantern Formation."
The Elder replied, "I’m not sure about that either, but we are close to success."
"Can we really open the connecting passage?" Ling Xuan gazed intently at the Elder, clearly hoping for his answer while also feeling anxious about what it might be.
"We will," the Elder assured her. "The connecting passage will definitely be opened."
At that moment, a soldier approached them. Ling Xuan and the Elder halted their conversation. Ling Xuan said, "I hope it's good news."
As Ling Xuan spoke, the soldier stepped forward and saluted them. Ling Xuan inquired, "What’s the situation?"
The soldier reported, "There’s no news at all; Ji Zichen seems to have vanished without a trace."
The Elder's gaze deepened as he said sternly, "You’d better put in more effort. If manpower is insufficient, send more people." His tone was sharp. "I made you Captain for a reason; if you can’t handle it, there are plenty of others willing to take your place."
No one enjoys being reprimanded. The Captain forced a smile and replied, "I will send more people out to search immediately."
The Elder waved his hand, signaling the soldiers to stand down.
"This place has many cracks," the Elder said. "These cracks are difficult to eliminate. Perhaps there are cracks nearby that we simply cannot sense, but with Purgatory Souls, we can easily open those cracks."
"I know that already. What exactly do you want?" Ling Xuan asked. "Are you worried about something?"
The Elder nodded. "Who lives here?"
"Who lives here?" Ling Xuan repeated.
The Elder reminded Ling Xuan, "You don't think the fire in the camp was spontaneous, do you?"
Ling Xuan replied, "That was man-made. I had someone investigate it, but found nothing."
"Those people are very familiar with this place, which is why they can move freely in and out of the camp," the Elder said. "If we can thoroughly investigate this area, it would be very beneficial for us."
"Thoroughly investigate?" Ling Xuan said. "Elder, I don’t understand what you mean."
The Elder asked, "Since we arrived here, have you seen a Demon Beast?"
Ling Xuan answered, "On the night of the fire, someone saw a Serpent Bat Dragon."
The Elder responded, "That is a mount of the divine beings, not a Demon Beast. If you insist on calling it that, I can't stop you. What I mean is a pack of Demon Beasts."
"None at all. What do you want to investigate here?" Ling Xuan joked. "You’re not planning to retire here, are you?"
The Elder laughed. "Of course I want to! Besides Zhuque Chenjing, where else can you find a place without Demon Beasts? It's not easy to enter here; this is truly a place that is easy to defend but hard to attack."
Ling Xuan's expression tightened. "Elder, you’re not suggesting moving Western King City here, are you?"
"Elder" chuckled lightly, "Do you think Western King City is more secure than here?"
"Ling Xuan" remained silent.
"Elder" continued, "This is just my thought. Whether to come or not depends on the Western King. Right now, we shouldn't focus on that. It's best to deploy more personnel around here. If those people come again, we won't be caught off guard."
Ling Xuan had an idea and said, "Do you think those people might be from the divine clan? I can't imagine they are mere mortals."
"Elder" pondered for a moment and replied, "I can't say for sure, but if they are indeed from the divine clan, they have magical artifacts. They wouldn't need to be so sneaky to deal with us."
Ling Xuan agreed, and Elder added, "It would be great if we could find out more about those individuals."
Ling Xuan remarked, "The Vermilion Bird Territory is not easy to investigate. The Mountain Valley is mostly forested, and it won't be easy to thoroughly scout the area in a short time."
Elder nodded. "Once the new Master of Magical Artifacts arrives, we can first check the rift."
"Ling Xuan," he said, "don't you think that before we arrived, the demeanor and tone of the Western King seemed a bit different from before?"
Elder had served the Western King for a long time and noticed the unusual behavior as well. However, when it came to explaining why, Elder hesitated. He said, "People are not unchanging. Perhaps the Western King is just worried about the progress of this matter and wants to resolve things here smoothly as soon as possible."
