Chapter 15 Skywolf Shalyn
Xia Lian sat quietly on the Open Zhou Divine Platform, facing the direction where Ji Zichen had left. She stared blankly into the distance, while Flying Wolf stood behind her. Seeing Xia Lian lost in thought, Flying Wolf felt as if she had slapped him across the face.
He silently observed her silhouette, contemplating whether to approach her but ultimately refraining. A breeze swept by, and neither of them moved; it seemed they had nothing else to do but remain in their stupor.
Suddenly, Xia Lian shifted slightly. Not wanting her to notice his presence, Flying Wolf quickly retreated to a corner outside the back door. As Xia Lian exited through the front door, he stealthily followed her. He trailed behind her for quite some time, and Xia Lian remained oblivious to his presence.
Flying Wolf found it frustrating to see Xia Lian so silent and lost in her thoughts. Suddenly, he stepped forward and said, “Xia Lian…”
Hearing someone call her name, Xia Lian looked up to find Flying Wolf standing there. She noticed a hint of resentment in his eyes and was taken aback. “Oh, it’s you. What’s going on?”
Flying Wolf fell into a moment of silence before letting out a cold laugh. “What? I can’t talk to you unless something significant happens? What do you think would warrant me speaking to you?”
His tone was confrontational, and Xia Lian responded in shock, “Who are you angry with?”
With a grim expression, Flying Wolf replied, “ Ji Zichen left for three days, and you’ve been sitting here for three days. What are you doing? Do you like him? He doesn’t deserve you!”
Xia Lian tried to maintain her composure as she said, “Flying Wolf! Do you even know what you’re talking about?”
Flying Wolf retorted firmly, “Of course I know! I advise you not to pin your hopes on Ji Zichen; he won’t accept you. You should have realized that by now.”
Though Flying Wolf didn’t say much outright, his implications were clear enough for Xia Lian to understand. The fact that she could exchange bodies to prolong her life made her feel like a frail old woman clinging to existence. Although she had never shown it openly, she was deeply affected by this reality.
With heightened emotions, Xia Lian responded, “Stop making assumptions! I don’t like Ji Zichen!”
Flying Wolf coldly replied, “It doesn’t matter if you deny it; I know you like him. You think he’s different from others? But let me tell you, every man is the same—there’s nothing special about him. And I can also tell you that he has grand ambitions!”
Xia Lian responded with an unusual cold smile, "He has a great ambition? What ambition does he have?"
Flying Wolf's eyes seemed to blaze with fire as he bluntly expressed his opinion, "If Ji Zichen has no ambition, then why is he actively involved in such matters? He is not from the village and has never lived in the Opening of the Zhou Wasteland. Why should he care about our lives and deaths? This path he is taking is not the right one, and it is extremely dangerous! It's simply a fool's dream!"
"Do you think I don't know who he is? He is from The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant, isn't he? And he's a Grand Envoy. Although he has been kicked out of The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant, do you think everyone in The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant is a fool? How could they possibly give up on someone skilled at finding relics like him? I believe he must be acting under the orders of The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant to concern himself with our affairs."
Xia Lian asked, "Orders? Why would The Divine Alliance Under the Covenant send him here?"
Flying Wolf replied, "Isn't it obvious? The Opening of the Zhou Wasteland is vast and rich in resources; there are certainly many relics, but we don't know how to find them. He is a Grand Envoy and should have already identified where the relics are. Whether or not he succeeds in helping us this time, we will be grateful. When they come back to excavate relics next time, they will definitely want us to guide them. Do you think we can refuse their request then?"
Xia Lian coldly mocked, "Flying Wolf, I didn't expect you to have such a narrow mind."
Flying Wolf knew that his words would surely provoke Xia Lian's dislike. He said, "Whether you believe it or not, time will ultimately prove it. No matter what he intends to do, as long as I'm here, he won't succeed. I'm not afraid to tell you that Bird is now under my command. Through them, I have the ability to protect the village! Xia Lian, I won't harm you; let's stay in the village and protect it together, okay?"
Flying Wolf's mix of soft and hard tactics left Xia Lian momentarily unsure of how to respond.
"Xia Lian," Flying Wolf continued, "you know that what I care about most is you and the village. I understand you well; you know that. In the past, I was willing to stand aside and let you choose for yourself, but now I can no longer do that."
As Flying Wolf tightly grasped Xia Lian's hands, he said earnestly, "Xia Lian, I will use my life to protect you. I will treat you well; you must believe me. Together with me, I can cherish you properly!"
"Flying Wolf," Xia Lian's voice was very soft. "Let go of me."
Reluctantly, Flying Wolf released her grip, but it felt as if something had pierced his heart. "Xia Lian... you..."
Xia Lian said firmly, "Flying Wolf, I understand your feelings. I also know that you will do everything possible to protect the village. However, you should feel ashamed of what Ji Zichen just said. Flying Wolf, your conclusions are completely unfounded. Ji Zichen is not acting out of personal greed or for anyone else's benefit; he simply wants to save everyone. The path he has chosen is very feasible!"
"Flying Wolf" frowned, "You really have fallen for him!"
"Xia Lian" could no longer hold back and said sharply, "Flying Wolf!"
"Xia Lian!" "Flying Wolf" roared, his expression growing more terrifying. "Now I finally understand! How foolish I have been! In your eyes, I am nothing!" His fist clenched tightly, revealing his deep sorrow.
"Xia Lian's" voice softened, "Flying Wolf, please listen to me..."
"Flying Wolf" turned away and said, "I'm sorry, I've lost control."
"Grandma Xia!" "Xi Zu" called out from behind "Xia Lian."
Seeing "Xi Zu" approach, "Flying Wolf" turned and walked away.
"Xia Lian" turned around and asked, "What brings you here?"
"Xi Zu," looking at the distant figure of "Flying Wolf," replied seriously, "Is Flying Wolf causing you trouble?"
"Xia Lian" forced a smile and said, "No. It's just a misunderstanding."
It was clear that "Xi Zu" did not believe "Xia Lian's" evasive response. "Misunderstanding? What misunderstanding? It seems to me there is no misunderstanding at all. Grandma Xia, you are simply too indulgent with Flying Wolf."
Regarding "Xi Zu's" admonition, "Xia Lian" did not argue back. She chuckled lightly and asked, "Are you just passing by or did you come to find me?"
"Xi Zu" shrugged and replied with a smile, "Of course I'm just passing by. Grandma Xia is so elusive; how could I possibly find you?"
Xia Lian glanced at Xi Zu, unsure whether his words were genuine or not, but he didn't care much. Xia Lian smiled and said, "I can tell you’re not just passing by. How long have you been following us?"
Xi Zu chuckled, "Well... it hasn't been long... just a little while."
The playful expression on Xi Zu's face faded as he asked, "Grandma Xia, how much do you know about Ji Zichen? Is he really trying to help us, or is it all about the ruins?"
Xia Lian stared at Xi Zu. How could he know about this topic if he had only been around for a short time? Xia Lian felt helpless against him and replied, "No matter what his intentions are, we shouldn't be suspicious of him. Even if he's here for the ruins, he's helping us. If he can convince Prince Huixin, that would be a huge benefit for us. He has helped us; can't we help him in return?"
Xi Zu thought for a moment and said, "I guess that's not wrong. Anyway, I'm not as enthusiastic as Flying Wolf. Helping each other is always a good thing."
Xia Lian didn't want to continue on that topic and asked, "Why are you wandering around here? Aren't you supposed to be supervising the Defensive Works?"
Xi Zu laughed, "Isn't it important to balance work and rest?"
Xia Lian replied, "I think you're just slacking off."
Though Xi Zu always spoke with a smile, he was keenly aware of why Flying Wolf had suddenly come over to talk to Xia Lian.
Flying Wolf's feelings for Xia Lian bordered on obsession. He didn't care much about whether Ji Zichen's mission succeeded or failed; he was only interested in using Ji Zichen's absence to further his own relationship with Xia Lian.
Xi Zu wasn't sure if Xia Lian liked Ji Zichen or not, but this triangular relationship gave him a headache. Compared to romance, Xi Zu preferred fighting. He had heard how Ji Zichen led the Militia to close the Gap and wished he could have joined them at that moment.
Under Ji Zichen's leadership, the Militia returned safely. Although there were some bumps along the way, it was still quite remarkable, and Xi Zu felt very relieved about that.
However, this upcoming confrontation with the Gravel Demon God made Xi Zu feel anxious for the first time in his life.
Their opponents were the Gravel Demon God and Xi Zu. Just thinking of these two names sent chills down Xi Zu's spine. The tales of the battle in Evil Spirit Hall Mountain Valley had long reached this place, and the Gravel Demon could turn corpses into stone with a mere gesture. How could one possibly deal with such a nightmare?
If the Arbitrator truly invaded this place, how many would perish at his hands?
Indeed, Xi Zu felt powerless. He had a thousand reasons to fear hearing the names of these two beings, but what frightened him even more was another matter.
He began to worry about the village at this moment, concerned about how effective their Defensive Works would be.

After Prince Huixin met with the allies from Mingxin Valley, he encountered Ji Zichen in the council hall. Although Prince Huixin found Ji Zichen's name both unfamiliar and familiar, upon seeing him, memories flooded back. The moment he laid eyes on Ji Zichen, recognition dawned.
Prince Huixin smiled and said, "So you are Ji Zichen!"
From Prince Huixin's reaction, Ji Zichen realized he was remembered. "Your Highness has a good memory; I didn't expect you to remember me."
Prince Huixin laughed heartily, as if meeting an old friend. "Did you forget? We had a fight in the alley; how could I possibly forget such an exhilarating experience?"
Recalling that fight made Ji Zichen feel somewhat awkward. It wasn't that he regretted their altercation back then; it was just that their statuses were different now. If Prince Huixin held a grudge, there would be no further discussion.
Ji Zichen said, "I apologize for that incident; please forgive me, Your Highness."
Prince Huixin waved his hand dismissively. "Forgive what? You didn't know my identity back then. Please sit; let's discuss business first."
