Chapter 11: Black Thunder
At this moment, there was no sound coming from above. It seemed that the Gu Diao above had some doubts. Cang Da was shouting, "I want to see the Saint King now! I need to tell the Saint King what I have discovered. If you're worried, you can come along."
A voice came from above, "Cang Da, of course I trust you. I'm just afraid you might be deceived by this human. We've been fooled by humans too many times."
Cang Da was furious and wanted to force his way through, but Ji Zichen stopped him. Ji Zichen took out the Azure Serpent Pearl given by Big Fool and opened his palm so that the Gu Diao above could see it clearly. Ji Zichen said, "This Azure Serpent Pearl was entrusted to me by Big Fool. If you don't believe me, you can come down and verify it."
The Gu Diao above fell silent for a moment, then suddenly a shadow leaped down from above. This Gu Diao was slightly taller than Cang Da but had a more piercing gaze. It glared at the Azure Serpent Pearl in Ji Zichen's palm and then scrutinized Ji Zichen again. The Gu Diao was confident that only their Guzhao Clan had the ability to hunt the Azure Serpent; humans were no match for it.
With a flash of brilliance in its eyes, the Gu Diao said, "I don't know if I should trust you. Big Fool may be foolish, but I know he has a good eye for people. You can enter, but I must warn you that you will be under full surveillance. If you make any unusual moves, I won't let you off easily."
Ji Zichen smiled lightly. "I understand."
As soon as the Gu Diao finished speaking, it moved its body and climbed up along the mountain wall.
At the end of the canyon was a dead end. Without the Gu Diao to guide them, no one would ever think that the Guzhao Clan resided just beyond this dead end. Cang Da led Ji Zichen and Lin Chuyu closer to the mountain wall.
After waiting for a moment, Ji Zichen heard a rumbling sound as the wall split open in the middle, revealing a hidden door. Cang Da said, "This passage was also created by friends of the Saint King. Humans can't climb walls like we do, so this hidden door was made."
Lin Chuyu closely followed Ji Zichen into the hidden door. Behind it was a long set of Stone Steps leading down to a short corridor. On the walls of the corridor grew a row of Red Flowers. The corridor was dimly lit, making the Red Flowers appear particularly vibrant. Lin Chuyu found them interesting and absentmindedly reached out to touch one of the flowers' centers when Cang Da immediately shouted, "Don't touch!"
But it was too late; as soon as Lin Chuyu touched the Red Flower, it reacted instantly, blooming wider and spraying a red pollen.
The entire corridor filled with pollen, and Lin Chuyu's vision blurred in an instant; she felt dizzy.
Hearing Cang Da's warning about the flowers releasing pollen, Ji Zichen realized something was wrong and had already held his breath. Lin Chuyu felt a strong arm supporting her; she heard a silent yet anxious sigh and knew it was Ji Zichen holding her up. Then Lin Chuyu collapsed into Ji Zichen's embrace.
Cang Da let out an exasperated huff without saying anything further and gestured for them to leave first. Ji Zichen nodded while carrying Lin Chuyu out of the corridor. Outside was flat ground, and only then did Cang Da say, "So foolish! Why did she have to touch that Red Flower?"
Ji Zichen asked anxiously, "What is happening to her?"
Zang Da replied, "This is a precautionary measure to prevent outsiders from entering. Don't worry, she will wake up after a few hours of sleep."
Upon hearing this, Ji Zichen felt slightly relieved. However, this measure, while not overly severe, was quite cunning. Anyone who saw the vibrant Red Flower in such a corridor would undoubtedly be tempted to take a closer look.
Such a trap could not have been devised by Gu Diao's intelligence; it was certainly the work of the Saint King's friend.
Lin Chuyu did not know how long she had been asleep, but a low-frequency breathing sound disturbed her sweet dreams. The sound made her feel quite uncomfortable.
Lin Chuyu opened her eyes but did not immediately get up. Instead, she looked around. The sunlight outside streamed onto her cheek, and Lin Chuyu felt warm. She was lying on a bed covered with a soft quilt, which made her feel very comfortable. Gradually, she began to discern her surroundings.
This was definitely a bedroom; she was certain of that because there were tables and chairs inside, and several paintings hung on the walls. Outside the room lay a Gu Diao, its gaze gentle and appearing to be a female Gu Diao.
Lin Chuyu had not yet left the room, so she did not know that the low-frequency breathing sound came from this Gu Diao.
As Lin Chuyu opened her eyes, the first person she wanted to find was Ji Zichen, but Ji Zichen was not in the room.
Not seeing Ji Zichen, Lin Chuyu quickly got out of bed. She thought to herself, "Brother Ji must be nearby; he wouldn't leave me behind."
She went to the door to search for him. He had to be somewhere around here.
However, as she stepped out of the door, she saw a Gu Diao lying in the open space outside. The Gu Diao carefully examined Lin Chuyu as soon as it noticed she was awake. "You are awake," it said.
The Gu Diao lay on the ground but was still much taller than her. Lin Chuyu felt frightened and took a step back, trembling as she asked, "Have you seen Brother Ji?"
The Gu Diao shook its head. "I don't know who Brother Ji is. You should go back inside and wait; I will report to the Great Guardian."
With that, the Gu Diao stood up and left.
Lin Chuyu did not return to the house, as she did not want to sit and wait idly. She glanced around her surroundings; behind her was a Grass Hut built beneath an oak tree, situated on a hilltop with grassy slopes.
Beyond the Grass Hut lay a cliff, and directly in front of Lin Chuyu was a lush green forest. Gathering her courage, she cautiously stepped into the woods.
The forest was alive with birds, including thrushes and Goldfinches. These birds curiously observed Lin Chuyu from the branches, seemingly intrigued by her presence as if they had never seen such a creature before. They were not afraid of her; as soon as she reached a tree, one Goldfinch flew onto her shoulder. Lin Chuyu found the Goldfinch incredibly cute and gently cradled it in her palm, asking, "Little bird, have you seen Brother Ji?"
The Goldfinch chirped twice and spread its wings to fly back to the branches. Lin Chuyu chuckled softly to herself, "How silly of me; how would a bird know where Brother Ji is?"
At that moment, a shadow appeared behind her, completely enveloping her figure.
She turned to look back and saw the Gu Diao that had tried to stop them from entering the gorge.
As the Gu Diao approached, Lin Chuyu noticed a scar running across its face from right to left.
The Gu Diao coldly asked, "Where is your friend?" This Gu Diao was named Black Thunder, and its tone was anything but polite. Despite the clear blue sky above, Black Thunder's voice struck like thunder from above.
"My friend?" Lin Chuyu finally understood Black Thunder's question. "Are you Brother Ji? I don’t know where he is either; I’m looking for him," she replied, trying to maintain a natural expression in front of Black Thunder.
Black Thunder's golden eyes were filled with fury, and its brows furrowed like a Sharp Sword. "You humans are truly troublesome. This is Gu Diao territory; how dare you wander about freely?"
Black Thunder scrutinized Lin Chuyu for a moment before continuing, "First, go back to your house. I will find him."
