Chapter 19: Rescue
Xia Lian stood still, as if she had encountered a situation like this before. She pointed to the surrounding forest and said, "This is the Spirit Immortal Realm. The place we are in is real; everything else is an illusion created by magical tools. Don't wander off."
Ji Zichen stepped back to Xia Lian's side. "Isn't this the Travel Path?"
Before Ji Zichen could finish speaking, Xia Lian interrupted, "Not yet. Just wait; the messenger will come to take us."
With that, Ji Zichen decided not to wander anymore. Suddenly, his stomach growled with hunger. It was no surprise; after sleeping for a while, he was indeed hungry.
Xia Lian smiled and took out some flatbreads she had prepared earlier, wrapped in a handkerchief. She handed one to Ji Zichen. "Here, eat this."
Seeing Xia Lian produce food as if by magic, Ji Zichen chuckled lightly. "How did you prepare this?"
Xia Lian raised her smile, which seemed to predict the future. "Last time was like this too, so I prepared some."
Ji Zichen devoured the flatbread in one go.
Although Ji Zichen had been awake for a while, the messenger still hadn't arrived, making him a bit impatient. "When is that person coming?"
Xia Lian's expression suddenly became somewhat unnatural. "The messenger isn't exactly human; more like half-human, half-god."
Ji Zichen was taken aback. "Half-human, half-god?"
"I am indeed half-human, half-god," the messenger suddenly interjected. "Sorry to keep you waiting."
The messenger did not ride a mount; he simply stood before Ji Zichen and Xia Lian. He appeared slightly taller than Ji Zichen and had approached silently without them noticing how he had done so.
The messenger introduced himself. "My name is Canglin."
"Canglin," said, " Ji Zichen, you've been asleep for a long time. I've actually come by several times, but you didn't wake up, so I didn't disturb you." He waved his hand behind him and added, "You must be hungry too."
With a flick of his wrist, the forest around them suddenly vanished, replaced by a vast clearing. In the center stood a thousand-year-old phoenix tree, beneath which was a long table piled high with fruits, vegetables, and an array of sumptuous dishes.
Ji Zichen's eyes widened in amazement. "You didn't see this last time," he said to Xia Lian.
Xia Lian glared at Canglin in indignation; he certainly hadn't treated her like this during her last visit.
"Canglin replied, " Ji Zichen, you are a special person, and special people deserve special treatment. This is prepared just for you. I don't eat, but rest assured, these dishes are made by renowned chefs from your world; I believe they will taste wonderful."
Ji Zichen had already eaten and felt full; there was no way he could consume more delicacies. "Let's skip this," he said. "Where is Kai Zhou Shen? When can I learn that Sealing Technique?"
Seeing Ji Zichen refuse to eat, Canglin waved his hand again, and the clearing transformed back into the original forest. "You shouldn't be here. It's not that I disagree with your learning the Sealing Technique, but Kai Zhou Shen has already allowed you in. He trusts me, and we've discussed your situation. While Kai Zhou Shen has faith in you, I do not. If you want me to trust you, you'll need to help me with something."
Ji Zichen thought to himself, "Canglin may be an envoy, but it sounds like Kai Zhou Shen relies heavily on him. It’s best not to provoke him."
"What do you want me to do?" Ji Zichen asked.
Canglin scrutinized Ji Zichen; he appeared weaker than other robust humans. Of course, some tasks did not require physical strength.
He glanced at Xia Lian, who he was somewhat familiar with. Xia Lian's kin had already assisted them greatly; they were among the first humans to trust Kai Zhou Shen.
"The Spirit Immortal Realm lies between your world and the realm of gods," Canglin explained. "For you, it's a distant place, but that's not important. The key reason we are here is twofold: one is to completely seal the Evil God, and the second is to repair the Divine Rift. The existence of this rift is a mistake on our part as gods."
Ji Zichen gasped in surprise. "You are one of the gods?"
Canglin sighed. "As of now, I am half of both. I am half human and half god as a form of punishment. During our war with the Vermilion Bird, we created many gaps. Numerous Demon Beasts have exploited these gaps for cultivation—something we certainly did not foresee back then. Kai Zhou Shen and I have found a way to repair these gaps; what you need to do now is seal the Evil God into a specific gap that I will designate."
"But before that, you need to rescue the Gu Diao; he will take you to meet the Saint King."
Xia Lian exclaimed, "Are those Gu Diao also followers of Kai Zhou Shen?"
Canglin replied, "Although Gu Diao possess intelligence, they still fall short compared to humans. They do not understand the meaning of being a follower; they only obey the Saint King, who is their god."
Ji Zichen asked, "Gu Diao? Which one is yours?"
Canglin answered, "Zang Da."
Xia Lian frowned and said, "Is it important?"
Canglin responded, "Every life in this world is important. Although Gu Diao Mountain Valley is hidden and known by few, without someone to introduce you, it would be impossible for you to meet the Saint King."
Kiko Chaki inquired, "Why do we need to meet the Saint King?"
Canglin said, "That will be explained later. Once you meet the Saint King, he will tell you the reason. Right now, time is of the essence; you must hurry and rescue him."
Xia Lian stated, "The clan leader has already released him; he is not in danger."
Canglin smiled and replied, "The clan leader may have released a person, but what about the Flying Wolf?"
"Flying Wolf?" Xia Lian asked. "Does your Flying Wolf want to kill Zang Da?"
Canglin explained, "The Flying Wolf is a devout follower. The clan leader allowed the Gu Diao to rest at the Open Zhou Divine Platform, which is unacceptable to the Flying Wolf. That’s all I have to say."
With that, Canglin's figure vanished from their sight.
A sudden rift opened behind the two of them. Ji Zichen looked at the rift and said, "Let's go out."
The two stepped through the Gap, but the Stone House was empty. They made their way from the Stone House to the Open Zhou Divine Platform, where they found a crowd gathered. Zang Da was once again trapped in the Formation Cage.
They exchanged glances, seemingly communicating that failure was not an option.
In the center of the divine platform, the clan leader shouted, "Flying Wolf! Release it! It is not our enemy!"
Flying Wolf stood by the cage, casting a disdainful glance at Zang Da. "Leader, this is a Demon Beast. How can you allow it to rest in such a sacred place?"
Ji Zichen looked toward the center and saw Lin Chuyu among them, while Militia members stood guard with heightened vigilance.
"They are your kin," Ji Zichen said. "I will deal with them, but rest assured, I won't let them come to harm."
Xia Lian shook her head. She certainly did not doubt Ji Zichen's abilities. "No matter what you intend to do, they are just doing their duty. If you take action, they will resist to the death. Let me handle this."
Xia Lian took out a white pill and said, "Take this."
Ji Zichen asked, "What is it?"
"This will keep you alert," Xia Lian replied.
After a moment of contemplation, Ji Zichen swallowed the pill. Seeing him do so, Xia Lian took one as well. She closed her eyes just as a gentle breeze swept through the Open Zhou Divine Platform, carrying a sweet fragrance. Suddenly, several people in the divine platform collapsed one after another.
