Chapter 17: Moving Vortex
The chief cast a glance at Zang Da, feeling displeased. "Its temperament is rather stubborn. In that case, take it to the interrogation hall. When Flying Wolf returns, let him have a word with it."
The Militia was immediately taken aback. The villagers held a deep respect for Flying Wolf, who was the bravest and wisest person in the village. There was a special method of interrogation that Flying Wolf employed; he could disassemble a person bone by bone and then put them back together without harm.
As soon as the chief finished speaking, Xia Lian felt uneasy. She truly did not want to concern herself with whether Zang Da lived or died, but Ji Zichen was so invested in it. If anything happened to Zang Da, Ji Zichen would surely be furious. Xia Lian knew well how Flying Wolf conducted his interrogations and frowned as she asked, "What will Flying Wolf do to it?"
The chief replied slowly, "I never inquire about his methods of interrogation; you know that."
Xia Lian did not press further. After a moment of silence, her eyes darted around before she finally said, "Can I speak with it for a moment?"
The chief looked at Xia Lian in surprise. They had not seen each other for many years; had she changed? Xia Lian had never liked Demon Beasts, yet now she wanted to talk to one. The chief was puzzled by her intentions and remarked, "What good is there in talking to a Demon Beast? You can think what you like."
Xia Lian took a few steps forward and knelt beside the cage of the magic circle.
Although Zang Da had been captured for some time, the chief had not properly examined it until now. As she gazed at Zang Da, she was slightly taken aback by its appearance. It resembled a leopard but was not quite one; it had a long snout and sharp claws. The chief had seen many bizarre Demon Beasts, but none like this one.
Zang Da's gaze fell upon Xia Lian, and it remembered her words: "You are his friend." A low sound escaped Zang Da, filled with pain.
Seeing Zang Da take the initiative to speak, Xia Lian moved closer and asked with concern, "From your voice, are you unwell?"
Zang Da noticed Xia Lian's genuine concern and felt its guard lower significantly. It replied amicably, "I am not sick; I just remembered..." Zang Da hesitated, realizing that Xia Lian was neither close nor distant to it. It didn't want her to worry about its troubles and fell silent.
"You are called Zang Da, right?" Xia Lian glanced back at the chief before turning back to Zang Da. "She is our chief; I believe you should know that she means you no harm."
The Guzhao Clan treated friends sincerely. Zang Da responded, "You are a friend of my friend; that is why I am speaking with you. I also know they mean me no harm."
Seeing that Zang Da could still discern good from evil, Xia Lian smiled slightly and said, "It's good that you understand."
However, Zang Da let out a low growl and said, "They mean me no harm, but they are forcing me to hand over the Azure Serpent Pearl!"
Xia Lian was momentarily speechless. She nodded and said, "We can find a compromise. Since you do not wish to give up the pearl, can you take us to capture the Azure Serpent?"
Zang Da had little fondness for the Azure Serpent, but it scoffed at Xia Lian's suggestion. "You have not helped the Guzhao Clan, nor has the Guzhao Clan helped you. We regard the Azure Serpent as an honorable opponent, and I will not take you to hunt them."
Xia Lian frowned, thinking to herself, "Honorable opponent? That title is completely contradictory." Although she couldn't agree with this perspective, she kept her thoughts to herself. Seeing Zang Da's firm response, she didn't want to press further and risk angering it.
Changing the subject, Xia Lian asked, "If you won't go, then how did you end up here? Is there a nest of Azure Serpents nearby?"
Zang Da replied honestly, "There is no nest of Azure Serpents nearby; I have already killed that Azure Serpent." Looking at the clan leader, Zang Da continued, "Someone from your group asked me about this last time, and I didn't answer. But since it's a friend of a friend asking now, I'll tell you."
Before explaining why it was near the village, Zang Da thought for a moment, trying to avoid alarming its kin. "Under normal circumstances, we do not approach places inhabited by humans. However, I came out of the valley with another companion to investigate something. Our Saint King saw a moving vortex in the Opening of the Zhou Wasteland. This vortex can devour everything, and we are here to find out what it truly is."
Zang Da could see Ji Zichen's vortex but couldn't be certain; after all, how could one person carry a vortex with them?
After hearing Zang Da's account, Xia Lian felt anxious. "Could it be Ji Zichen?" The details provided by Zang Da made her think of Ji Zichen first; who else could be associated with such a moving vortex?
At that moment, Xia Lian glanced at the clan leader. The leader understood her gaze and furrowed her brow as she asked Zang Da, "Did your Saint King see a moving vortex? That's strange. Could it be that your Saint King is also favored by Kai Zhou Shen?" But that seemed impossible; the leader dismissed her own inquiry, pondering how Kai Zhou Shen could possibly favor these Demon Beasts.
This Saint King must have no connection to Kai Zhou Shen!
Though the leader rejected this notion, she still asked, "Do you also worship Kai Zhou Shen?"
Zang Da replied proudly, "The Saint King is the Saint King; there’s no need to worship anyone like Kai Zhou Shen."
The clan leader exchanged glances with Xia Lian and thought to herself, "This is too strange. Could there be other Prophet Gods?"
Fully immersed in thought, the clan leader was brought back to reality when Xia Lian lightly touched her arm.
Seeing the clan leader lost in worry, Xia Lian asked, "What's wrong?"
The clan leader sighed heavily and said, "I... I'm fine."
She then turned back to Zang Da and asked, "How does your Saint King know there is a moving vortex here?"
Zang Da shook its head and replied, "I don't know; if the Saint King says there is one, then there is."
The chief let out a deep sigh and said to the Militia, "Let it out."
"Let it out!" The two Militia members were taken aback, looking terrified and unsure of what to do. Their eyes turned to Xia Lian, but it seemed to be of no help.
Xia Lian looked at the chief without saying a word.
The chief apologized to Zang Da, "No matter how you Saint Kings managed it, this proves that you are not low-level Demon Beasts. I will not keep you locked up any longer. I invite you to rest here for the night. There are no large houses in the village that can accommodate you, but you may go to the Open Zhou Divine Platform for the night. Once I finish something, I would like to talk with you."
"Are you really going to let me go? You won't take the Azure Serpent Pearl?"
The chief replied, "I want it, but I won't force you."
Zang Da hesitated for a moment, but being able to go outside was still better. "Then hurry and let me out!"
The chief stepped back a few paces and signaled the Militia to open the cage. The Militia, steeling themselves, opened the cage door.
Zang Da slowly emerged from the cage and suddenly let out a fierce roar at the two Militia members, scaring them half to death.
However, Zang Da did not make any aggressive moves and simply said, "I'm hungry; I want to eat."
The chief smiled and said, "Follow the Militia to the divine platform; someone will bring food over shortly."
