Chapter 97: Rescue at the Temple
Ji Zichen knew that his situation was quite dire, but the High Priest was alone, and there were no other Cult members in sight. Perhaps they were all asleep. In a one-on-one scenario, Ji Zichen was confident he could hold his ground against the High Priest. The earlier ambush that had led him into this predicament was his own fault, and he couldn't blame anyone else for it. He watched as the High Priest earnestly invited him to join the cult.
Ji Zichen found it amusing, but the choice presented to him was no choice at all. How could he recklessly agree? "To die if I refuse? What kind of nonsense choice is that? You needn't bother; I will not join your Hall of Malevolence."
The High Priest looked disappointed. "What a pity. I see an incredible power within you. If you weren't one of my brothers, you would surely be a threat in the future. I rarely make exceptions for others, but you are an exception. Are you really not considering it?"
Ji Zichen's body was bound, leaving him with no chance to fight back. Though he disliked being at someone else's mercy, he still couldn't bring himself to compromise for the sake of survival. "If you're going to kill me, just do it. There's no need for words."
---
Yang Jingwan and Lin Chuyu cautiously entered through the back door, making their way toward the temple hall. To reach the hall, they had to pass through a long colonnade lined with heavy granite flooring. As Yang Jingwan approached the hall, her heart grew heavier; she seemed to sense the presence of the High Priest. She inwardly cursed, "This is bad; it really is the High Priest who has captured him."
Lin Chuyu, confused, asked, "We haven't seen anything along the way. How do you know it's the High Priest who captured Brother Ji?"
Yang Jingwan replied, "That corridor leads directly to the temple, and only the High Priest resides nearby. Although there are many buildings around, they all serve the High Priest's attendants. You don't know that the High Priest has a kind of sensing ability; if someone unfamiliar appears near him, he can definitely sense their presence."
Lin Chuyu exclaimed in surprise, "How can he sense that? It sounds so mystical!"
Yang Jingwan's expression suddenly tightened. "Every member of the Hall of Malevolence consumes a potion called Death Water, which enhances their physical potential."
Lin Chuyu gasped in shock. "Did you drink it too?"
Yang Jingwan chuckled lightly. "I can freely change my body; it doesn't have any effect on me. I'm an exception in the Hall of Malevolence."
Her expression then turned serious again. "The High Priest is different; he possesses an extraordinary power compared to others. In the past, when our three Great Seats had a dispute with him, we found that even when we teamed up, we were no match for him."
Lin Chuyu had never seen the other two Seats but realized from Yang Jingwan's ability to possess bodies that they were not easy opponents either. She gasped in astonishment, "Is the High Priest really that powerful?"
Yang Jingwan smiled bitterly and said, "I'm not trying to scare you; it's just the way it is."
The High Priest, seeing Ji Zichen's stubbornness, glanced at her indifferently. "There's no other way. Since you refuse to listen, you'll just have to accept your fate."
With his right palm half-raised and fingers extended, the High Priest's nails suddenly turned black. With a sound, they elongated several inches. "Ordinary methods seem ineffective against you. This is the Evil God's Black Armor. Since you refuse to submit to us, you'll have to offer the power within you to the Evil God. This is my first time using such a method on a human, but I can see you're no ordinary person."
Yang Jingwan and Lin Chuyu rushed in through the back door and saw Ji Zichen and the High Priest. They hid in a corner, and Yang Jingwan frowned as she whispered, "The most important thing now is to find a way to save her."
Lin Chuyu looked at Yang Jingwan nervously. "Do you have any good ideas?"
Yang Jingwan smiled bitterly. "I do have a plan, but it's not a good one. I'll act as bait. While I distract the High Priest, you go save her."
Lin Chuyu was deeply moved by Yang Jingwan's willingness to stand up for them, but she still didn't understand why she was doing this. Seeing that they were already in a standoff, Lin Chuyu couldn't help but worry, "Will you be in danger?"
Yang Jingwan laughed lightly. "Don't worry about me; just focus on saving her."
With that, Yang Jingwan moved toward the High Priest. The Black Armor had already pierced Ji Zichen's chest, and something strange about it made Kiko feel as if countless insects were crawling over her body before she fainted from the pain.
Suddenly, Yang Jingwan leaped behind the High Priest. He pulled the Black Armor out of Ji Zichen's unconscious body and glanced at Yang Jingwan for a moment, seemingly sensing her aura. Although she had taken on a new body, her essence remained unchanged. The High Priest said calmly, "I knew you wouldn't die. Since you're alive, where have you been all this time? Why did you return now?"
Yang Jingwan smiled slightly. "Does it matter if I came back? You never cared about me like this before."
As soon as she finished speaking, she lunged forward and struck at the High Priest with her palm. The High Priest's expression changed. "What are you doing!"
Yang Jingwan's palm energy surged toward him as he tilted his body slightly. However, from her hand emerged an illusory transparent palm. To anyone else, it would seem very strange, but the High Priest was unfazed; this was the Vengeful Spirit summoned by Yang Jingwan, which was one with her being. As Yang Jingwan's palm approached within eight inches of the High Priest, she suddenly retreated backward.
But the Vengeful Spirit within Yang Jingwan burst forth, taking on a humanoid form. It thrust a palm towards the High Priest, who shouted, "A mere trick!"
The High Priest slightly turned his body, stepping aside to evade the Vengeful Spirit and then sweeping his robe to unleash a wave of black energy that struck the Vengeful Spirit in the back. With a shriek, the Vengeful Spirit was dispersed by the High Priest's attack.
Lin Chuyu saw that Yang Jingwan was engaged with the High Priest, drawing his attention. She held her breath and focused, searching for an opportunity. In her heart, she thought, "I’ve barely survived; Brother Ji, you must not die."
Yang Jingwan casually released several Vengeful Spirits to entangle the High Priest, subtly leading him to the right side of the hall. Lin Chuyu noticed that the High Priest had moved away from Ji Zichen and suddenly dashed toward him.
Ji Zichen was bound to a pillar, his head hanging down. Lin Chuyu hurriedly untied the ropes. Ji Zichen collapsed into her arms, and seeing that he had lost consciousness, she couldn't tell if he was alive or dead. Lin Chuyu felt like an ant on a hot pan, calling out to him, "Brother Ji! Brother Ji..."
Ji Zichen groaned softly and slightly opened his eyes, revealing Lin Chuyu's delicate features. His expression brightened as he asked, "Are you... alright?"
Seeing him still concerned for her safety at such a moment made Lin Chuyu's nose tingle with emotion. "I'm fine... What about you?"
Ji Zichen pressed his hand against his chest in pain and replied, "I'm okay... but that High Priest didn't stab my heart."
Lin Chuyu was filled with mixed emotions. "That's great! As long as you're okay."
Ji Zichen felt a sense of doubt rising within him. "It seems that the High Priest doesn't really want to kill me; he appears to be draining my power."
At that moment, a scream echoed from the left side of the hall as Yang Jingwan cried out; the High Priest had struck her down with a single blow.
