Chen Rui smiled lightly, not saying much.
"Alright, just hurry up and leave," the Captain said, his eyes a bit red. "If possible, do everything you can to get home."
"Understood." Chen Rui stood at attention, raising his right hand in the highest respect to the tall, sturdy man before him.
Suddenly, a loud bang echoed from the V44, sounding abnormal as if something was wrong with the aircraft.
Bang! Bang! Bang! The series of sounds made everyone uneasy, but without knowing where the problem lay, they could only wait helplessly.
"Let's go," the Captain frowned. Although he had no idea what was happening, that noise was definitely not normal.
"Okay." Chen Rui nodded and walked toward the window.
Out of nowhere, a figure fell from above, crashing onto the makeshift bridge. Since only half of the body landed on the bridge, inertia caused the figure to plummet downwards.
Though it happened in an instant, everyone who saw it knew exactly what that figure was!
"Get out of here!" Chen Rui shouted urgently at those on the V44.
At that moment, a deafening sound erupted from above, reminiscent of a skyscraper collapsing—the final wail of a building in distress.
The V44 lost power in its left rear engine and immediately began to tilt downward. Despite the pilot's desperate attempts to regain control, the aircraft was too close to the building. After plummeting several meters, the tail of the plane crashed into the structure, causing the fourth engine to lose power upon impact with the building's exterior.
With two engines down and the tail embedded in the building, the V44 completely lost power and fell to the ground. The massive explosion that followed drew the attention of many Infected Persons nearby.
Chen Rui scrambled to his feet. During the crisis, he had managed to pull everyone back; it was hard to imagine that such a seemingly unimposing body could unleash such tremendous force.
"Why?" The Captain shook his head as he approached the window, staring at the wreckage of the plane below with red-rimmed eyes.
"At least they cleared the roof of the Infected, but because they stayed too long and made too much noise, they still attracted a group of Infected. It seems that one or more of them crashed directly into Engine Three of the V44, which led to this situation," Chen Rui calmly analyzed. He was unsure when he had acquired this skill, but no matter the time, place, or circumstances, he could quickly assess the current situation.
In fact, based on test results, the V44 could still maintain operation with dual engines for a while. However, due to the suddenness of the event and the plane being too close to the building, this tragedy occurred.
"I'm not asking about that," the Captain said with a bitter smile. He had certainly figured out the cause of the accident as well, but he simply couldn't bear this impending failure after coming so close to success.
After all, not everything can be restarted!
The Captain drew his pistol, reloaded a full magazine quickly, and aimed it at his own head.
"Bang! Thud!" The sound of him hitting the ground followed immediately after the gunshot. The Captain's head was gone; it didn't explode in a spray of blood like in movies where a close-range shot would cause a gruesome scene.
"Let's go," Chen Rui said as he turned around.
"Aren't we going to stop him? At least we could use him as a decoy; that kind of anger would definitely attract quite a few Infected," Li Xue asked lightly.
"Not much use; that would only put us in a passive position surrounded by them," Chen Rui shook his head. "Besides, this is the best way for him to find relief." With that, he opened the door to the guest room.
Li Xue smiled beautifully and quickly followed Chen Rui.
"When will you learn from Chen Rui?" Zhou Yan glanced at Zhou Zhi.
Zhou Zhi retorted with annoyance, "Why don't you learn from Sheryl instead? Stop thinking about such violent things..."
"Enough with the lovey-dovey stuff; hurry up and catch up," Li Li said with a laugh as she patted Zhou Zhi on the shoulder and hurried after Chen Rui.
Zhou Zhi and Zhou Yan exchanged glances and smiled before following suit.
Chen Rui pushed open the guest room door and walked straight out. As expected, there were no Infected in the corridor now; all of them had been drawn to the stage by the V44 before crashing down to the ground along with it.
"Where are we going?"
Li Xue asked softly, the quiet environment prompting her to lower her voice involuntarily.
"I don't know," Chen Rui replied with a smile.
"Don't know?" Li Xue's expression was quite interesting, a mix of doubt, relief, happiness, and sadness flashing across her face in contrasting styles.
Seeing Li Xue like this made Chen Rui laugh even more. "I really don't know; go ahead and bite me."
Li Xue looked at Chen Rui, who suddenly remembered something from before and hurriedly added, "Just kidding, just kidding! I was joking, sister!"
Li Xue paid no heed to Chen Rui's pleas and felt justified in leaving a row of deep crescent-shaped marks on Chen Rui's left arm, almost drawing blood.
Chen Rui looked at the devil before her with tears in her eyes but had nothing to say; after all, it was her own fault for making that remark—truly forgetful of her past experiences.
The group walked quietly toward the elevator. Given the previous circumstances, choosing the elevator felt much safer than taking the stairs at that moment.
The elevator quickly ascended to the First Floor. Inside, there was no one else, nor any Infected Person; only a meter-high splash of fresh blood on the wall and even more on the floor, likely from some Brother who had run into an Infected Person while fleeing and then... well, there was no further story.
After entering the elevator, they closed the doors but did not immediately press the floor button; instead, they waited for Chen Rui to speak.
Noticing their unusual behavior, Chen Rui forced a smile and asked, "Why are you all looking at me?"
"We're waiting for a plan," Qin Xin casually replied.
Chen Rui chuckled again. "Have you all been relying on Chen Zijing before?"
"Not really," Li Li said with a smile and shook her head. "It's just that when we're with him, our proposals always get quickly scrutinized for flaws, while his proposals conveniently have no loopholes for us to find. Over time, we've just gotten used to waiting for him to speak first."
Chen Rui was taken aback by this reasoning: "I'm not even the same person as Chen Zijing. After all this time, you should know the difference between us. Why is it still like this?"
"Since there are no so-called missions left, it can't just end in a deadlock. If we haven't received any orders from above for a long time, it becomes clear that the real mission has nothing to do with protecting the Vice President."
Chen Rui forced a bitter smile, the only clue he had was derived from the basic principles of dreams.
It was impossible for a natural cause in a dream to lead to a complete failure of the mission; this was one of the fundamental principles of dreams. No matter what natural accidents occurred within the dream, they would not completely result in the failure of the dream mission.
If the actions of someone in the dream caused the mission to fail completely, then the dream would be terminated immediately.
Given this, if their real mission was indeed to protect the Vice President, and their negligence had led to the Vice President's death, then they should have already completed the dream and exited it.
Yet everyone was still here discussing survival plans, clearly indicating that their real mission was different from the orders from above!
"That's indeed the case," Zhou Yan suddenly laughed. "However, according to regulations, I won't tell you anything about the mission objectives."
Chen Rui immediately glanced around and could tell from everyone's expressions that there was truth to those words.
"Are you kidding me? We don't even know the mission objectives; how can I formulate an action plan? Can we still have fun?" Chen Rui said with an exasperated smile.
Everyone looked at Chen Rui with silent amusement until they noticed he had stopped smiling.
"Alright, alright! Based on the current situation, my guess is that our only mission objective right now is: to stay alive!"
Chen Rui sighed and secretly glanced at Zhou Yan's face. There was no change; it was helpless. The true psychological state of this group often ran deep, making it impossible to gauge their thoughts based solely on their 'surface' age.
The other six people, upon hearing Chen Rui's words, stopped their silly laughter and quietly turned their attention to him.
"Since that's the case, there must be a time limit. Whether it's our superiors contacting us with a mission or if it's truly a survival task, we can't just sit here and wait for death. The first thing we need to do is: leave the city!" Chen Rui said with a smile, his tone carrying a hint of emotion.
"But the main roads are completely blocked, right? The other major routes are probably the same, and our vehicle is still stuck at the blockade. How are we supposed to get out of the city?" Zhou Zhi questioned, pointing out that they didn't even have any means of transportation. Were they supposed to walk?
"The Stone Sword Hotel and Pyramid Hotel are adjacent to each other, and their parking lots are next to one another as well. If we go out through the back door, which leads to the South Gate, we'll directly reach the parking lot. We can find a large SUV or a seven-seater van to get around. We don't need to go on the highway; we just need to drive east for less than a kilometer!" Chen Rui scanned the six people in front of him, a slight smirk on his lips that hinted at mischief.
"East?" Li Li frowned.
Chen Rui nodded. "That's right, east. And I'm certain that the road conditions in that direction should be much better than heading west!"
To the west of Excalibur Hotel lies Highway 15, which is naturally in poor condition because when a crisis hits, everyone wants to escape via the highway first. However, heading east wouldn't present such a situation.
Because to the east lies McAllen International Airport!
