"Get ready, there might be some documents in here. Don't get confused; if I'm not around, just consider it a break for you. Make up for it during your time off," Chen Rui said as he picked up the folder and headed towards Xiong Kai's office.
Liang Yu, who had been complaining, quickly followed after hearing Chen Rui's words about making up for it during time off. "Boss, come on! I'm being serious here. Didn't you see how late I stayed up last night? This is selfless dedication!"
Without turning back, Chen Rui chuckled, "So where did you stay up late? If the records show you were in the office, I'll count it as overtime for you. Should we go check with the headquarters? But if you weren't in the office, can we treat it as an absence?"
"You’re such a heartless executioner, beast, robot..." Liang Yu retorted, feeling a bit embarrassed and angry.
As they reached the door of Xiong Kai's office, a voice came from inside. "Who made the big sister angry? Can't you be a little gentler?"
Chen Rui was too lazy to respond. He opened the folder and laid it on Xiong Kai's desk, demanding, "What does this 'some reasons' refer to?"
Xiong Kai glanced at it and continued typing on his computer. "It's nothing much; it's just that the ward is guarded by security personnel—seems like professional security guards—so we can't observe closely and don't know the situation. Moreover, the external guards from Security Company are top-notch; we have no way of knowing who is inside."
Chen Rui analyzed, "In short, this is related to Guo Luxing or Lin Yan. But only Guo Luxing could afford professional security; the person inside is likely his relative, or even..."
Xiong Kai interjected again, "It could even be Guo Luxing's father. However, we can't confirm this guess. Guo Luxing's father used to be the chairman of Eternal Prosperity Trading but resigned for unknown reasons."
"And then transferred his shares to Guo Luxing?" Chen Rui asked.
"Not exactly. Guo Luxing is quite talented; his father once gifted him one percent of Yongchang's shares as a coming-of-age gift. The rest he earned himself. After selling that one percent stake, Yongchang experienced a period of undervaluation. During that time, due to his investments, he multiplied that capital several times over and acquired nineteen percent of Yongchang's shares on his first birthday. Together with his father's shares, they held over forty-three percent of the total shares. Later on, during his tenure as a director, Guo Luxing executed several large-scale projects that led to Yongchang's rapid rise."
Xiong Kai spoke excitedly; clearly, Guo Luxing's past was quite fascinating. He took a sip from a historically significant iron tea cup and continued, "You could say that Yongchang's foundation and early development were built step by step by his father. However, the real growth—from an unknown listed company to a top-tier brand recognized as a blue-chip stock—was due to his efforts."
"Get to the point!" Chen Rui slammed the table; he wasn't there to listen to family history.
"The timing of Guo Luxing resigning as executive director coincides with when Yongchang changed its chairman," Xiong Kai concluded.
"Yes, something must have happened."
"Exactly. Their shares accounted for more than half of the boardroom votes, so the change in chairmanship must have resulted from conflicts between them," he added.
Chen Rui pondered for a moment before telling Liang Yu, "Prepare everything; we're going to ask him directly."
In the parking lot of City One Hospital, a police car came to a stop, and a man and a woman climbed out of the vehicle.
“Boss, is this really okay?” the female officer tugged at her tightly knotted tie. “What if someone finds us out?”
The male officer frowned. “Can you keep your mouth shut? And don’t call me ‘boss,’ just call me Officer Chen.”
Indeed, these two impostor officers were Chen Rui and Liang Yu, dressed in blue shirts and pure black trousers, looking every bit like Duke's underlings.
“Yes, Officer Chen.”
Ignoring Liang Yu’s usual antics, Chen Rui picked up his briefcase and headed toward the inpatient department.
The two arrived on the third floor of the inpatient department. According to their intel, Mr. Guosheng should be in Room 1.
As soon as Chen Rui stepped into the corridor, he spotted two security guards in black standing in front of Room 1. Gritting his teeth, he strode confidently toward the door.
When he reached Room 1, he intended to state his purpose directly but suddenly realized that such an approach was not typical for police conducting a raid. He feigned pushing the door open.
One of the guards quickly intercepted him. “Sir, please identify yourself and state your purpose.”
“Police are investigating. Can’t you see? Obstructing our work is a crime,” just as Chen Rui was about to speak, Liang Yu boldly stared at the guard who had stopped Chen Rui.
Exactly! My assistant is really nailing it! She looked just like a fresh graduate from the police academy.
This did catch the guard off guard for a moment; however, he wasn’t foolish. The crime of obstructing public duty was rather vague. Due to previous adjustments in civil rights, there had been significant upheaval in the police force. In short, if someone stopped you, it didn’t necessarily count as obstruction; you could simply take another route.
This legal loophole had always been an enemy of the public security system. Although various parties were trying to find a way to achieve a win-win situation, it was evidently not that easy. Improvements were only made reluctantly after incidents occurred.
Chen Rui noticed the change in the security guard's expression and waved his hand to stop Liang Yu. He pulled out a document from his briefcase, stamped with a large red seal. "This is the arrest warrant, but we haven't been authorized to proceed yet; otherwise, it wouldn't just be the two of us here."
If Liang Yu's earlier words had been like thunder to the security guard, then Chen Rui's document was a direct lightning strike.
The Security Company was still a private enterprise, and no matter how strong the guard was, he had no law enforcement authority. In front of Chen Rui, he was simply powerless.
Reluctantly, the burly man opened the door, signaling for the two to enter.
As Chen Rui and Liang Yu sighed simultaneously at the moment the door closed behind them, they began to assess the layout of the room.
Although it was claimed to be an ordinary ward, it was quite spacious inside. The layout was not much different from that of a VIP room, and the medical equipment inside was nearly on par with that of a major hospital. No, it wasn't just on par; it surpassed it entirely. The treatment equipment in this ward could practically support a large-scale surgery—it was almost like an operating room.
"What brings you here so late? Our esteemed guest?" an elderly voice came from within.
The entrance to the ward was in a corner, so as Chen Rui and Liang Yu stepped inside, Guosheng could not see them, nor could they see him.
Chen Rui tightened his grip on the briefcase and strode confidently into the ward.
Contrary to what one might expect from a patient in such a facility, Guosheng was not covered in tubes or surrounded by various instruments. The elderly man simply sat quietly on the hospital bed, gazing out at the street through a floor-to-ceiling window.
This scene puzzled Chen Rui; from outside, there hadn't appeared to be any floor-to-ceiling windows in this hospital.
"This is the power of technology. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary window, but in reality, it's a one-way floor-to-ceiling window," Guosheng said with a smile upon noticing Chen Rui's confusion.
"I assume you two have come to discuss something? Please get straight to the point; I don't like beating around the bush."
"Mr. Guosheng, I am here to formally inform you..." Chen Rui's words were interrupted.
"Just get to the point; I don't like beating around the bush."
"You've already figured out that we're not police officers, haven't you?" Chen Rui sighed helplessly.
"Of course."
"How did you figure that out? The security couldn't even tell." Chen Rui looked helplessly at Guosheng. He had initially hoped to use his disguise to uncover some interesting insider information, but he never expected this old man to be so perceptive.
"That girl has a police rank of first-class officer, which means she graduated from the police academy at least two years ago. There's no way someone who has been a police officer in Beijing for two years would act like that," Guosheng said with an air of resignation.
Chen Rui quickly turned to look, finding Liang Yu leaning against the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the scenery outside.
Chen Rui approached and grabbed Liang Yu by the collar at the back of his neck. "Boss, boss, what's wrong?"
"Boss?"
"Officer Chen! Officer Chen, what's wrong with me?"
"What’s wrong with you?" If possible, Chen Rui would be absolutely furious right now.
Reluctantly releasing Liang Yu, he walked over to Guosheng and forced a smile. "Sorry, as you can see, we are not police officers, so there's no need to feel constrained. We just want to ask you a few questions, and we won't take any formal records. Think of it as a casual chat."
"Are you also a guest sent by my son?" Guosheng smiled, clearly losing interest in Chen Rui.
"I'm sorry, your son Guo Luxing is indeed our client, but I'm not here as a guest. I want to understand your relationship with Guo Luxing," Chen Rui explained with a smile.
"Hmph, what relationship? Ever since he abandoned the company for that woman, I've had nothing to do with him."
"Are you referring to Sister Lin Yan? I apologize if this seems disrespectful to you, but I must seriously warn you not to insult our client in front of me," Chen Rui maintained his smile.
"Oh? She's also your client? Ha ha, you’re not here to kill me, are you? Put away that ugly expression; that smile is quite unpleasant," Guosheng showed no courtesy towards Chen Rui.
"I’m sorry; this is just how I smile. However, others find it quite charming when I smile like this, so I can’t help it. Besides, we’re just here to understand the issues between you and Mr. Guo Luxing. According to our information, Lin Yan is likely to become Mr. Guo Luxing's wife soon. What are your thoughts on that?" Chen Rui continued smiling. His words were sincere; he never faked a smile. If he smiled at someone, it meant he wanted to; if he didn’t smile at them, it meant he disliked them. That was simply how Chen Rui operated.
"Impossible! How could that kind of woman be worthy of being my daughter-in-law?" With that, Guosheng turned his head towards the floor-to-ceiling window and ignored Chen Rui completely.
"Oh? Are you sure?" Chen Rui looked into Guosheng's eyes and asked, "Is such an outstanding girl really not worthy of being your daughter-in-law?"
"Nonsense!" Guosheng suddenly shouted at Chen Rui, his voice so loud that a security guard rushed into the room. "Mr. Guo."
Liang Yu keenly noticed that the security guard had his right hand behind his back, likely holding some kind of weapon, ready to strike at Chen Rui, who was closest to the bed.
"Nothing's wrong, get out!" Guosheng yelled fiercely at the guard, causing him to hesitate for a moment before quickly exiting the hospital room.
"You are lying."
"What..." Guosheng stared at Chen Rui for a long time before finally sighing. "It's just a chat, about you." He smiled at Chen Rui.
"How could I possibly not like such an outstanding girl? Don't misunderstand me; I mean she is qualified to be my daughter-in-law. However, since I said what I did two years ago, it was destined that I couldn't watch her enter our home." His once bright gaze suddenly dimmed, tears glistening in his eyes.
"Then, could you tell us this story? We are just listeners." Chen Rui maintained his smile, which was noticeably brighter now.
"That smile really annoys me," Guosheng remarked as he looked at Chen Rui.
"There's nothing I can do about it; you'll just have to get used to it."
