As Peng Hao remained deep in the fog for an extended period, a sense of unease spread among the group, though they hesitated to express their anxiety openly.
Chen Rui glanced at his watch; it had been half an hour. He turned to Ye Han. "Drive."
The man in sportswear behind them spoke up, "Co-Pilot! It's been so long since the Captain entered the fog and hasn't returned. Doesn't that prove there's danger lurking in there? You want us to join you in this adventure? We should be heading back to the airport where at least there's some food and communication equipment."
Chen Rui fixed his gaze on him, his tone serious. "Then please take a look behind you, check what's behind the car!"
Many turned to look out the window, and only then did they realize that they had long since entered the fog. Visibility was so poor that they could barely see beyond the road, let alone the other side of the Overpass.
"Exactly. We've already been enveloped by the mist, or perhaps it's spreading around us. Is anyone still suggesting we return to the airport? I bet it's shrouded in fog now too. And most importantly, we've been waiting here for half an hour—why hasn't the car behind us caught up yet?" Chen Rui said, suppressing his voice to avoid laughing. The so-called 'passengers' behind were merely AI, mere background characters; once the main characters were gathered, there was no need for the supporting cast to remain in focus.
This revelation shocked many; six out of seven passengers looked extremely uneasy.
Indeed, the implication of his words was clear: those at the airport were likely...
No one agreed to return to the airport. The bus continued toward the city center, still moving at forty or fifty miles per hour. No one spoke; the atmosphere inside was heavy with unspoken fears. Aside from a girl fiddling with her phone, everyone else was lost in thought.
Suddenly, a middle-aged man said, "I think our best option right now is to stick together, find a place to stay, gather some food and communication devices resistant to interference, and wait for rescue!"
"And where would you go? Who doesn't want to go home right now? Who's willing to go somewhere else? I dare say everyone here is feeling quite hospitable," replied Athletic Wear Man.
Silence fell again.
The bus came to a sudden stop, causing several heads to bump against the seats in front. Just as Athletic Wear Man attempted to stand up, he stumbled and fell onto Chen Rui, startling him. "Hey, take it easy!"
"Who would have thought you were interested in men, haha," the young girl behind chuckled lightly.
The guy seemed a bit annoyed. "I'm Yu Shiming. Let's be friends?" He shot a glare at the girl afterward.
A man behind him rubbed his forehead. "Are you out of your mind? Hit the brakes!" Even the most composed people can let slip some foul language when they're in a bad mood.
"Boss! Look," Ye Han ignored him and spoke to Chen Rui.
The overpass ahead looked as if it had been twisted, with a section jutting up, followed by a break that stretched for thirty to forty meters. Chen Rui turned and smiled wryly. "Everyone! Get ready to start walking."
Taking the lead, Chen Rui got out of the vehicle and quickly found an emergency passage next to the overpass that led directly to the ground.
"Please hurry up; no one knows what might happen here." Although Chen Rui didn't say it outright, everyone indeed picked up their pace significantly.
"I remember there's a hotel over there, less than a kilometer away. Let's stay there for the night," suggested a young boy.
No one objected; being inside a building felt much safer than being out on the street.
Soon, they arrived at the hotel, which was a Four-Star Hotel, fifteen stories high. The interior decor, while not blindingly extravagant, could still be considered splendid. Of course, the entire building was quite empty.
"Should we stay on a high floor or a low floor?" Chen Rui asked.
"High floor!" several of them replied almost in unison without hesitation.
Chen Rui's thought was, "Living on a lower floor gives me a chance to escape in an emergency." However, he still took the room cards for the floors above the twelfth from the front desk.
The fifteenth floor was luxurious, with only three rooms: two deluxe suites and one top-tier suite. There was also a hidden swimming pool on the rooftop. The fourteenth floor had four deluxe suites, while the thirteenth floor consisted of eight double rooms and four standard suites.
Naturally, the two couples fought over the two rooms on the top floor, while the remaining three occupied the suites on the fourteenth floor. As for the top-tier suite, it went to Chen Rui and the crew members, while everyone else settled on the thirteenth floor.
By this time, it was almost dinner time. Without Chen Rui needing to ask, everyone instinctively headed to the restaurant on the sixth floor. It was only when they arrived at the restaurant that Chen Rui suddenly realized a serious problem: among the seven crew members who came over, aside from Chen Rui, it seemed that none of the other six could cook!
Chen Rui's face darkened immediately. A hand clapped on his shoulder, and when he turned around, it was Yu Shiming. "What's wrong? The ladies can't cook, huh?"
Chen Rui remained silent and sighed.
"Indeed, nowadays girls generally can't cook. What a world we live in," he said, rolling his eyes at a nearby beauty. "I'll help out; my cooking skills are quite good!"
"Whose? If your cooking is good, then there are no bad chefs in this world! No wait, if you're good at cooking, then no one should be unable to fry vegetables!" The girl mocked as she walked straight into the kitchen. "Do you dare to come and compete?"
"I'm coming!" Yu Shiming laughed, giving Chen Rui a pat before rushing into the kitchen.
"I want to cook," said a young girl to her boyfriend.
"Then go ahead! I'll go with you, okay?" he smiled.
"Hmph! Can you even cook? I'm going," she replied.
"Wait a moment, you go ahead. I'll be there soon." The boy smiled and kissed the girl on the head before walking towards Chen Rui.
"I'll go help too; it looks like you need more hands," the boy said with a grin.
Chen Rui felt a surge of joy. "I can't thank you enough! What's your name?"
"Guo Luxing. My girlfriend's name is Lin Yan," Guo Luxing replied, laughing as he dashed into the kitchen.
Chen Rui's gaze swept over the other three men, noticing their expressions were also off. He quickly issued an internal command through the communication system, "Get a few people to shout that they're hungry! Make it sound annoying and a bit arrogant."
Before long, someone at the round table shouted, "Hey, why isn't the food coming? What's taking so long?"
Another person chimed in, "Exactly! You guys make money but don't provide good service. Don't you know that customers are kings?" The table erupted into chaos.
A man around thirty couldn't take it anymore. "Hmph! How high and mighty do you think you are? Just because you're sitting in Business Class on a plane? Acting like you're some big boss." He turned to another man slightly older than himself. "Are you just like them?" With that, he headed straight for the kitchen.
Another man in his forties also stood up and quietly walked towards the kitchen.
The last person looked at the other tables and sighed helplessly before following them into the kitchen.
Chen Rui chuckled inwardly. "Not bad! They've got some sense of justice." He ran towards the kitchen.
Although everyone had left, fortunately, there were still chickens, ducks, and fish available. The kitchen wasn't stocked with much, but it was enough to feed over thirty people.
Seeing Chen Rui walk in, Yu Shiming, who was chopping vegetables, waved him over. "Brother, you really did well! You managed to get these folks here to cook. Just thinking about it makes me laugh."
"It wasn't me who invited them; they came on their own!" Chen Rui explained, locking eyes with Yu Shiming and placing a hand on his shoulder. "Trust me."
"Come on, I don't believe that for a second. You definitely pulled some strings behind the scenes," Yu Shiming replied, brushing Chen Rui's hand away.
"I—you're really something else!" The beautiful woman who was stir-frying vegetables exclaimed upon witnessing the 'intimate' scene.
"Whose fault is it? If anyone's gay, it's this guy. What does it have to do with me?"
"It's you! Just now, you were practically flirting! Admit it!" The woman said, a tear glistening at the corner of her eye.
"My fiancée, Liu Xiwen, is always a bit off," Yu Shiming chuckled as he explained.
"Bah! You're the one who's not normal! Break up! Break up! Go play with your boyfriend! Get lost!"
"Hey! What does this have to do with me?" Chen Rui said with a wry smile, suddenly coming up with an idea. He hooked his finger under Yu Shiming's chin and said, "Watch closely; I'm going for it." He leaned in slowly.
In an unexpected turn of events, everyone present was caught off guard by what was happening, including Yu Shiming, who forgot to struggle. Liu Xiwen was the first to react, abandoning her pot and rushing over with a knife hand ready to strike at Chen Rui's hand.
What she didn't expect was for Chen Rui to smoothly sidestep. The momentum caused Yu Shiming's face to be pulled forward just as he released his grip. At that moment, Liu Xiwen's knife hand landed squarely on Yu Shiming's face, leaving him looking utterly embarrassed.
Liu Xiwen never expected to hit her husband. Although she had already pulled back her strength at the last moment, it still landed squarely on Yu Shiming's face, leaving her feeling a bit guilty.
The dramatic scene made everyone laugh, but their gazes toward Chen Rui were slightly different from before.
"You!" Liu Xiwen frowned at Chen Rui.
"Bro! Look at this move of mine; it directly awakened your wife's love for you. How great is that? Since we're brothers, I won't charge you for it!" Chen Rui said shamelessly with a grin.
"You really scared me, man~" Yu Shiming replied sarcastically. "How do I know if you're sincere? Between us, well, I'm not into that."
"Hah! Want to give it another try?"
"You dare!" Liu Xiwen shouted, glaring at Chen Rui.
"I was wrong, I was wrong! I won't do it again. You're the boss; your word is law," Chen Rui said, clasping his hands together in an exaggerated gesture of apology.
After the farce, the atmosphere lightened a bit, allowing them to temporarily forget that they were still surrounded by thick fog, which represented danger in their eyes.
According to Chen Rui's philosophy, perhaps they hadn't truly forgotten; they were merely affirming an old saying: life is short, so enjoy it while you can.
Indeed, in this perilous environment where anything could happen at any moment, it was better to lighten their spirits now.
