When Anna lightly tapped Oman's shoulder, Oman was still completely absorbed in studying the strange plants from the depths of the South American rainforest in his hands. The plant had complex leaf veins and unique flowers, which fascinated Oman. Anna's tap brought him back to reality, and he realized it was already lunchtime.
"Hey, Oman, you should take a break too," Anna said with a smile, her eyes showing kindness and concern.
Oman nodded and responded, "Yes, yes, I'll be right there." He gently placed the plant back into the cultivation pot, ensuring it was safely positioned in a corner of the laboratory. Then he stood up, stretched, and felt his muscles were a bit tense.
"You're working too hard, don't forget to take a break," Anna reminded him with a smile, then turned and left, ready to enjoy her lunch break.
Oman looked at Anna's back and felt grateful for her reminder. He washed his hands and then walked towards the association's rest area. There, many colleagues had already gathered together, enjoying their self-brought lunch or food purchased from nearby restaurants. Oman found an empty seat and took out a simple sandwich and some fruit from his backpack.
While having lunch, Oman's thoughts couldn't help but drift to the upcoming announcement of the expedition team members. He knew he had done his best and now could only wait for the results. He tried to focus on the food in front of him, telling himself to accept and move forward regardless of the outcome.
When Oman was deeply lost in thought, he was suddenly slapped on the back with great force. Max jokingly said, "What are you doing, Oman! Being antisocial, not even joining us for lunch!" Following behind Max were Xiong Yi and Tang Jie, both silent but smiling. Startled by Max's sudden slap, Oman turned to see his playful expression and couldn't help but laugh. "Haha, I was just lost in thought, didn't expect you all to be here," Oman responded, feeling the lively atmosphere brought by Max and his colleagues.
Max sat beside him and expressed some surprise at Oman's simple lunch: "Just this? You need to eat well and keep up your strength." He then opened his own lunch box, which contained nutritious and colorful food. Max's lunch box looked like a complete balanced meal, rich in nutrients.
Yūichi and Tōru also sat down, although the two didn't speak much, they exchanged friendly glances with smiles. Tōru took out a tightly packed food container from his backpack, inside was homemade salmon salad, which looked both delicious and healthy.
When Yūichi opened his own lunch box, it revealed rows of exquisite and delicious sushi, which amazed everyone. The sushi not only looked beautiful but also emitted an enticing aroma, clearly prepared with great care by Yūichi.
Max saw these sushi and his eyes lit up. He couldn't help but reach out and take one. "Wow, this looks so delicious!" he said as he put it in his mouth, showing great satisfaction on his face.
Yūichi immediately noticed Max's actions and frowned. "Hey, Max, that's my lunch!" His tone carried some dissatisfaction but also a hint of resignation.
At that moment, Tang Jie and Oman took the opportunity while Xiong Yi was busy reprimanding Max to secretly grab a piece of sushi to taste. Their actions were quick and secretive, and they exchanged a glance, tacitly sharing in this little prank.
When Xiong Yi turned around and found that his sushi was missing a few pieces again, his expression became even more complicated, mixed with annoyance and helplessness. "You guys!" he muttered, but he didn't seem too angry.
Oman looked at his colleagues' respective lunches and couldn't help feeling a hint of envy. He decided that next time, he would try to make something different to enrich his lunch options. "It looks like I should also learn to make something different," Oman said, while starting to taste his own sandwich, simple but made by his own hands.
Tang Jie smiled as he watched Oman, eating his own salmon, and said, "One of these days, I'll have to teach you a few cooking tips, otherwise your sandwiches..." He didn't finish his sentence, but the meaning was already very clear.
Oman listened with some dissatisfaction and retorted, "What's wrong with my sandwich? Here, try it!" He handed his sandwich to Xiong Yi.
Xiong Yi hesitated for a moment, but still took it and took a bite. In the next moment, his face instantly became incredulous, almost instinctively wanting to spit it out. He exclaimed in surprise, "Oh my, what is this taste! It's too salty and too spicy!" His reaction made Max and Tong Jie couldn't help but burst into laughter.
Oman looked a bit embarrassed as he scratched his head and said apologetically, "I might have gone a bit heavy on the seasoning..." A hint of shyness appeared on his face, followed by a slightly awkward smile. This reaction amused both Tang Jie and Max, with Tang Jie adding, "Looks like your cooking skills still need some improvement, Oman!"
Max couldn't resist his curiosity and took a bite of the other half of the sandwich. His expression went from anticipation to surprise to resignation in an instant, and he could only nod with a wry smile, agreeing with Xiong Yi's assessment.
Oman awkwardly took back the sandwich, but he didn't seem to mind and instead started joking with everyone. He laughed and said, "It looks like I really need to spend more time on my cooking skills. Alright, Tang Jie, you'll have to teach me for real another day."
The atmosphere during lunch became more and more harmonious with the laughter of the four people. The time they shared was filled with simple and sincere friendship. After they finished cleaning up the tableware, Max suddenly reminded everyone, "Just now Alyssa Duff sent a notice to the mailbox. After lunch, she will announce the list of the expedition team."
As soon as these words were spoken, Oman's mood instantly became tense. A hint of unease flashed in his eyes as he sought a bit of reassurance from Max with a brief gaze. Max responded with an encouraging smile and patted Oman's shoulder, saying, "Don't worry too much, Oman. No matter the outcome, you've already done very well."
Xiong Yi and Tang Jie also noticed Oman's tension and each comforted him in their own way. Xiong Yi, in his direct yet caring manner, said, "Oman, everyone has seen your performance over these three weeks, so don't worry too much."
Tang Jie then added, "Relax, Oman. No matter what, we support you."
The four of them finished their lunch with this conversation. Oman felt the pressure in his heart slightly relieved, but he still couldn't completely relax. He knew that soon an important moment would come - the announcement of the expedition team list.
