In the Dim Forest, a pervasive miasma hung in the air, the ground was damp and decayed, and swamps occasionally bubbled up. The deep, dark green scenery filled the eyes, thick enough to be suffocating, leaving a profound mark on the heart.
Heavy breaths echoed in the air, accompanied by frantic running, constant falls, and desperate climbs. Fear was left behind in disarray, while despair was allowed to roam free. Everything felt hazy; sweat or tears blurred the view ahead.
A piercing roar shattered the silence, mingled with maniacal laughter.
Blood, entrails, severed limbs.
In an instant, everything changed again.
It was that city under a blue sky dotted with white clouds, where the neighbor's Rose had secretly climbed over the wall. The houses were arranged in a charming disorder, with slate roofs tinged with green and flowers of every color blooming amidst smiling faces.
A tall figure stood out, with a bright smile that held a hint of mischief. Dressed in a white short-sleeve shirt and light blue jeans, he embodied the essence of that city.
The refreshing scene quickly faded away, shattering into fragments as if crushed by an unseen force.
Xu Nuan suddenly opened her eyes to find herself staring at an unchanging expanse of jungle. The heavy dark green mingled with deep black-blue, weighing down on her heart and making her want to cry.
The crackling sound of dry branches and leaves burning filled her ears, mixed with faint rustling noises as someone shifted nearby.
Xu Nuan turned her head slightly to glance at Tang Jingshu and Deng Yinyin, who lay beside her on the damp mat.
Being part of a team that felt more like strangers was less appealing than forging ahead alone.
This was Xu Nuan's conclusion after spending time with so many Second Batch Players.
Her thoughts drifted to her experiences with these five individuals: Gu Ze, who had crossed paths with her before; Xu Hang, who seemed inexplicably resistant towards her; the timid Xie Huai; the friendly Tang Jingshu; and the troublesome Deng Yinyin.
Xu Nuan slowly closed her eyes again. Perhaps it was better to face challenges alone.
She had grown accustomed to solitude, to dreaming alone at night. Compared to walking hand in hand with others, she preferred being on her own.
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Xu Nuan unknowingly drifted back to sleep.
"Ah! There's a crocodile!"
As a result, Xu Nuan, who had only dozed off for a short while, was once again awakened by the familiar sound of screaming. Covering her increasingly painful ears, she gritted her teeth and sat up, a thin layer of anger already forming on her face.
The others gradually sat up as well, all groggily looking at Deng Yinyin, and upon seeing her, they froze in place.
Deng Yinyin was still in the posture of twisting open a bottle cap to drink water, while several dozen meters away from her were two crocodiles.
It was inaccurate to call them crocodiles; there were no rivers nearby, indicating that these creatures were purely terrestrial. These two animals were much larger than the adult crocodiles seen on television, their width reaching that of three adults side by side. What was most chilling was that under the sunlight, the gleaming teeth of these creatures shone like steel.
"Why do the animals in this jungle look so strange?"
Xie Huai Zhan said nervously, unconsciously leaning closer to Gu Ze and Xu Hang.
Gu Ze unbuttoned a few buttons on his shirt, stretched his neck, and glanced at Xu Hang.
"What’s strange isn’t important; what matters is that these two look very hungry."
"Of course. These two are Steel-Toothed Crocodiles; their teeth can easily snap human bones. The most important thing is that they haven’t eaten for three days."
It was that damned System voice again.
Deng Yinyin squeezed her water bottle, wanting to curse loudly but was pulled over to the side of several men by Tang Jingshu.
The two Steel-Toothed Crocodiles were slightly opening their mouths, drool dripping out onto the grass below. The grass that got hit began to turn black, indicating that this drool had corrosive properties.
Even Xu Nuan, who had ventured into the Fifth Level, had never seen such animals before; the threat posed by the Steel-Toothed Crocodiles suddenly ranked first among dangerous creatures in her mind.
Xu Nuan began to reflexively think about what weapons she had in her backpack that could possibly fend off these two Steel-Toothed Crocodiles.
However, before she could think clearly, she was pulled aside by someone.
The grip on her arm was neither too tight nor too loose, and the warm breath that brushed against her skin sent an unusual sensation spreading through her heart.
Xu Nuan turned around to see Gu Ze with a serious expression, his smile gone.
Xu Nuan blinked, feeling a bit confused, momentarily forgetting to break free from his grasp.
"You and Xie Huai should hide up in the tree while Xu Hang and I deal with these two guys."
His warm voice carried a seriousness that brooked no argument.
Xu Nuan turned around and saw Deng Yinyin and Tang Jingshu struggling to climb the tree with Xie Huai's help, their movements clumsy, while Xie Huai appeared at a loss.
Gu Ze followed Xu Nuan's gaze, a hint of amusement playing at the corners of his lips.
"Help them out."
Xu Nuan lowered her eyes, finally freeing her arm from Gu Ze's grip and walking over to Tang Jingshu's side.
"Hey."
Gu Ze chuckled lightly. Turning to face the two Steel-Toothed Crocodiles that were watching them intently, his expression shifted to one of vigilance. He glanced at Xu Hang, who was starting to move, and his voice unconsciously grew deeper.
"It seems that having learned some martial arts has its advantages."
