In the dense forest, shadows loomed heavily.
The scorching sun filtered through layers of thick, unruly foliage, casting only a few sparse rays of light onto the ground littered with skeletal branches.
A gentle breeze stirred the shadows of the trees, creating flickering patches of darkness, hinting at something lurking in the depths. The occasional sounds echoing through the woods added an air of sinister terror to the surroundings.
Tall palm trees stood proudly, their lush fronds spreading arrogantly in all directions. The stout trunks shot upward defiantly, as if vying for height against one another.
Xu Nuan gripped a crude wooden stick, repeatedly swatting at the bushes on either side as she struggled to carve a path forward. The wide expanse ahead, illuminated by light, sparked a glimmer of excitement in her almond-shaped eyes. However, when her gaze fell upon the scene before her, that spark quickly dimmed.
“Still haven’t found a way out.”
Her voice, which should have been clear and melodious, was laced with exhaustion but devoid of despair.
After intense exertion and constant tension in her nerves, Xu Nuan had long forgotten what true pain felt like. To continue playing the game, she reluctantly chose a patch of open ground to sit down.
She removed her heavy backpack and took out a bottle of water. As she twisted off the cap, her movements faltered momentarily as memories of her experiences since entering the game flooded back.
Indeed, a bitter smile crept onto Xu Nuan's lips; she was now in a large game—specifically within a large islet rented by a biotechnology research company known as "Zero." However, this was merely the company's claim. After enduring various survival games, Xu Nuan began to question whether such a simple island could truly accommodate so many diverse survival environments.
This was a survival game with a reward of ten billion. Before starting, all participants were required to sign a life-and-death contract. Ten million would be deposited into a designated beneficiary's bank account. On this island, they would experience one hundred different survival environments, with supply stations and hints for the next level provided after each stage.
“Survival Game?”
Xu Nuan's voice was low, laced with heavy sarcasm.
"Death Game."
She still did not open the bottle cap but carefully placed it back into her backpack for future use.
She had originally been a clerk in the human resources department of a conglomerate in B City. Half a month ago, upon learning that her missing ex-boyfriend had entered this game, she resigned without hesitation and signed the Life-and-Death Contract to join as one of the Second Batch Players.
What she did not expect was that after more than twenty hours, she had only reached the Fifth Level.
The other Players who had entered with her scattered like frightened birds after witnessing a companion being swallowed whole by a Python during the third challenge.
Left with no choice, she pressed on alone, hoping to find him soon and question him about why he had done this.
Thinking back to the scene where the Politician, who had been analyzing the game situation just moments before, was suddenly attacked and devoured by the Python sent chills down Xu Nuan's spine. The coldness rising from her feet spread to her heart.
At that moment, Xu Nuan heard a sound slicing through the air.
It resembled the noise made by vines colliding with the air, accompanied by the creaking of branches being severed. In this eerily quiet forest, it was particularly jarring.
She turned around abruptly, and what met her eyes was a sight that made her tremble all over.
Long limbs moved freely and agilely among the trees, resembling an Ape but with a frame as large as an adult. Its fur was a dark gray, and around its facial features was a band of white fur that resembled a skull. Its enormous black eyes were deeply set in their sockets, and its face was more horrifying than menacing.
In an instant, the creature was right in front of her, its mouth emitting a continuous hissing laughter.
Her feet, wanting to flee, felt as if they were nailed to the ground. Xu Nuan's terrified eyes were fixed on the limbs of this monkey-like monster. What were referred to as limbs were merely two fingers and two toes; more accurately, they were four sharp blades capable of slicing through flesh and tearing out hearts and lungs.
