Chapter 169: Withering Destruction
The creature before them left the three of them stunned.
It had dinosaur legs, a crocodile's mouth, massive horns, a body covered in black scales, and enormous scythe-like dorsal fins.
In their lives, they had never encountered such a bizarre beast; it was neither a dinosaur, nor a crocodile, nor a shark.
What on earth is this thing?
"Nico Robin, it's Nico Robin's giant beast."
Nami recalled the bounty notice she had seen and remembered the appearance of that giant creature, shouting loudly.
"Is it really?"
Ace and Blackbeard were momentarily taken aback, both recalling the news about Nico Robin.
Two and a half years ago, Nico Robin and the giant beast attacked Alabasta, and three months ago, the giant beast had attacked a Vice Admiral.
This giant creature bore a striking resemblance to the one depicted on the bounty notice; such a being had only appeared before the world this one time.
"Nico Robin is nearby? Is she with Blackbeard's crew?"
Ace thought of this and looked at Nami, his eyes filled with inquiry.
Nami shook her head and said, "Nico Robin has nothing to do with Blackbeard."
She had followed Blackbeard for quite some time but had never seen any sign of Nico Robin.
"Well..."
Ace looked towards Blackbeard, who appeared somewhat displeased in the distance.
He naturally did not recognize Nico Robin, but the presence of her giant beast here was certainly significant.
A pirate with a bounty exceeding one hundred million, though her identity was unique and she was known as the Demon Child, in terms of strength, she was not worth mentioning to him.
However, he was currently gravely injured and at his limit; her existence posed a tremendous threat.
"Nico Robin, what brings you here?"
Blackbeard scanned the surroundings, dark energy swirling around his right hand as he awaited Nico Robin's appearance.
Ace and Nami felt a mix of anxiety and anticipation in their hearts.
None of them believed that the giant beast had come here on its own; Nico Robin must be nearby.
"Boom."
Yet there was no response. Instead, the giant beast charged forward with its six powerful legs directly at Blackbeard.
"If Nico Robin won't show herself, then I'll just kill you first."
Seeing this scene, Blackbeard's body released black smoke that spread outwards. He pressed his right hand against the ground, and the smoke thickened as it extended toward the giant beast.
Black Hole!
In just a moment, the giant beast stepped into the area shrouded in black smoke.
"Be torn apart," Blackbeard thought with a sinister grin. The black smoke emitted a powerful gravitational force, pulling and compressing surrounding objects into the darkness.
Anything that emerged from the shadows would be reduced to fragments.
"We can't step into the black smoke," Ace said, his expression anxious. Just moments ago, Blackbeard had demonstrated this scene, where all the surrounding buildings were crushed and drawn inside, only to be released later as mere debris.
Unexpectedly, however, the giant beast hesitated for a brief moment, as if something was holding it back. But in an instant, it broke through the obstruction and continued charging forward. Although its speed had slowed, it was not restrained and pressed on.
"How is this possible?" Blackbeard exclaimed in astonishment, bewildered as to why the gravitational pull and devouring effect were ineffective.
The black smoke itself possessed immense gravity and could absorb any flames, lightning, bullets, blades, and attacks directed at it.
When an opponent stepped onto the black smoke, it would absorb the force of each step while simultaneously restricting their movement. It would then draw in their struggling power and compress them into fragments within the smoke.
But why was it not working?
In Blackbeard's astonished gaze, the giant beast charged through the black smoke and stood before him, opening its massive jaws to bite down on Blackbeard.
"This can't be happening!"
Blackbeard's expression was one of confusion, but there was no time to think further. He raised his fist as darkness enveloped him and struck at the approaching giant beast.
"Die."
Blackbeard put all his strength into this punch. Although his power was weakened due to his injuries, this punch, fueled by his entire body, was enough to kill a hundred-meter-long Sea King.
Boom.
His fist collided with teeth, producing a tremendous sound.
Crack.
After a brief moment of stillness, a sharp sound echoed as Blackbeard's arm suddenly snapped, breaking cleanly in two.
How could this be?
How could the force be so great? It was even stronger than his full power, instantly shattering his arm.
Why couldn't his Dark-Dark Fruit absorb this power?
Blackbeard was bewildered as Xiaqiu's jaws enveloped him, biting half of his body into its belly.
Crack.
Blackbeard was severed in half by Xiaqiu, his lower body collapsing to the ground.
Puff.
Xiaqiu spat out the half of Blackbeard's corpse and tossed it aside, planning to eat it later.
"Dead?"
Ace and Nami stared in shock at the scene before them.
Blackbeard had actually been killed by the giant beast, and it had happened so easily.
The sudden shift in circumstances caught them off guard; the joy of survival was quickly overshadowed by the tension that followed.
The beast had killed Blackbeard—what would happen to them?
Ace didn’t look at the beast but shouted, "Lady Nico Robin, please come out."
He tried to communicate with Nico Robin, but there was no response. Instead, there were only the sounds of heavy footsteps approaching.
The giant beast slowly walked toward Ace.
"Damn it."
Ace's expression changed as he clutched his chest and shouted, "Nico Robin, we have no grievances with you. Please call off your beast. If there are any conditions, we are willing to meet them."
Still, no one responded.
"If you want to kill me, then just kill me. Don't take Nami," Ace gritted his teeth and said.
"Ace, you don't need to say anything more."
Nami waved her hand dismissively, lying there with a smile. "Maybe Nico Robin isn't even here. And what if we die? We were supposed to be captured by Blackbeard anyway. Now that he's dead, even if I die, it would be worth it. It's just that you, Ace, would have to sacrifice yourself to save me."
"Nami, you are my companion. I brought you to the Grand Line, how could I not save you?"
Ace tilted his head back upon hearing this, smiling as he replied, "By the way, your choice was good. Diki, who betrayed Dad and killed his teammates, is dead. I've completed my mission this time."
As the two felt the giant beast approaching, its massive mouth appeared above them, and the stench wafting from it was unbearable.
Drip.
Saliva dripped from between its teeth onto the two of them, but they could no longer pay attention to such things.
At the moment the giant beast opened its mouth, they resignedly closed their eyes.
However, the anticipated death did not come. Instead, a grand voice echoed, "Ace, be my son... no, be my subordinate."
