Chapter Sixty-Two: Attack
In the blink of an eye, three months had passed, and it was now February of the year 1516 in the Sea Circle Calendar.
Boom.
Near Loguetown, a pirate ship slowly sank, disappearing beneath the waves.
"That's the third one this week, isn't it?"
"Every pirate ship has sunk shortly after setting sail, and none of the crew survived."
"I heard it's the Sea God’s wrath, punishing those wicked pirates."
"Good riddance. These people have turned Loguetown into a filthy place."
On the shore, a group of civilians stood at the port, discussing the pirate ship that was gradually sinking into the surface of the sea.
"It's a sea creature, at least over forty meters long."
On one side of the port, next to a massive naval battleship, stood a towering figure. He had a mane of brown hair and a grotesque face, with a long sword strapped to his waist.
"Major Yuchimura, why is this sea creature attacking pirates?" Beside him stood a muscular man, chewing on a cigar.
"I don't know. It arrived here last week and has attacked three pirate ships since then," Yuchimura replied with a frown.
"As long as it doesn't attack merchant ships or fishing boats, killing pirates is just ridding the world of scum," the man said nonchalantly.
"There's really no need for us to interfere."
Yuchimura withdrew his gaze and looked at the other person. "Smoker, why did you come here to take over as the branch leader of Loguetown? This place is not exactly welcoming."
"Because this is the town where Pirate King Roger was executed, and it's also a necessary stop for pirates setting sail from the East Blue." Smoker said, his eyes distant as he recalled events from eighteen years ago. At just twelve years old, he had witnessed the execution of One Piece in Loguetown, which sparked his desire to become part of the Navy.
"This place? Although the East Blue has given rise to figures like Pirate King Roger, Revolutionary Army leader Dragon, and Naval Hero Kong, it is still the weakest sea among the Four Seas."
Yuchimura chuckled. "The pirate strength in the East Blue is quite weak. If you stay here, you'll probably find yourself stuck in a position for years, just like I did."
Smoker exhaled a long puff of smoke. "Promotion doesn't matter to me. I simply cannot allow anyone to inherit the will of One Piece and set sail for the Grand Line from here."
"Suit yourself. I'm heading back to Naval Headquarters now. Maybe we'll meet again," Yuchimura said with a smile.
"Lord Yuchimura, you seem quite happy to leave this place."
Smoker shook his head. "Heart Point, that sea creature might very well attack you."
"It's just a sea creature. If it dares to attack me, it will just become my next meal," Yuchimura replied with a grin as he walked along the harbor and boarded a massive battleship.
Before long, the battleship powered up and began its journey into the distance.
"Off we go, Dasky."
Smoker watched as the battleship slowly departed, calling out to the woman behind him as he turned away towards the horizon.
“Too little.”
Xiaqiu felt the Enhanced Energy within him and angrily twisted his body.
After killing Arlong, five months had passed, and there were very few pirates to hunt.
Thus, he thought of Loguetown and made his way to the island near Reverse Mountain where Loguetown was located.
This was the closest island in the East Sea to Reverse Mountain, and Loguetown was the last stop for many pirates before entering the Grand Line.
Xiaqiu had been in Loguetown for a week when he encountered three groups of pirates.
However, the Enhanced Energy contained within them was still far too scarce.
Xiaqiu wanted to grow stronger, and this urgency was even greater than when he had been lying in wait for two years to defeat Arlong. Back then, he primarily aimed to evolve his tentacle claws that could injure Arlong, increase his size, and quietly wait for opportunities while observing the surrounding waters to strike when the time was right.
During those two years, Xiaqiu steadily improved himself without feeling overly anxious.
But now, he desperately hoped to enhance himself by consuming pirates.
The reason for this was his desire to venture into the Grand Line.
This thought grew stronger by the day; the only thing holding him back from putting it into action was the danger that the Grand Line posed.
To suppress this fear, Xiaqiu yearned to become stronger.
But it wasn't enough.
The energy from these pirates was insufficient.
Just then, Xiaqiu spotted a Naval Battleship approaching.
This Battleship?
Xiaqiu noticed that this Naval Battleship was different from the one he had seen before; it was larger and longer.
Moreover, the waves of seawater it generated were much stronger, indicating a greater effect of Seastone.
This was not an ordinary Branch Base Battleship.
Loguetown held a unique position in the East Blue, being the island where One Piece was born and met its end. Here, it was not far from Reverse Mountain.
The person in charge of Loguetown was Smoker, who had once blocked Luffy from leaving the island, risking his reputation as a Marine Colonel.
Thus, the authority in Loguetown was certainly at the level of a Marine Colonel.
Oda mentioned in the SBS that the ranks of headquarters officers were three levels above those in the Four Seas; a division colonel would roughly equate to a Captain like Dasky.
Now, there was a Battleship in the harbor, and another one was setting sail. The specifications of this Battleship were identical, clearly not an ordinary Naval Battleship from the East Blue.
Furthermore, the departing Battleship was heading towards the Doldrums.
It was on its way to the Naval Headquarters at Marineford in the Grand Line.
In other words, the people on the Battleship must possess considerable strength.
A Colonel? A Major General? Or perhaps a Vice Admiral?
Xiaqiu didn't know, but at the very least, they were a Colonel from the headquarters. Once consumed, it was likely that Xiaqiu's own strength could be further enhanced.
Moreover, regardless of whether the opponent was a Devil Fruit user or not, falling into the water would significantly diminish their power.
Naturally, Xiaqiu dared not devour a Devil Fruit user, as in One Piece, the Soul Fruit ability was likely obtained by consuming Nun.
Although being a sea fish, it was uncertain if such an ability could be acquired through that means.
However, once obtained, it would spell disaster for Xiaqiu.
Eating a Devil Fruit and then falling into the sea would not cause the Devil Fruit ability to disappear, but it would render the body powerless.
As a sea fish, Xiaqiu wasn't worried about suffocating, but if unable to swim and sinking to the ocean floor, it wouldn't be long before being devoured by other sea creatures.
Thus, Xiaqiu made every effort to avoid this scenario; each time he consumed a pirate, he ensured they spent some time in the water first.
And if they lacked a Devil Fruit ability, their strength would also weaken underwater.
Devour them and then head for the Grand Line.
Xiaqiu thought as his body transformed into a fleeting shadow, rushing toward the Naval Battleship.
Boom.
Xiaqiu, carrying immense power, charged at the bottom of the Naval Battleship with the horns on its head.
Crack.
The keel remained unharmed, but the hull of the Battleship was shattered, revealing a large hole through which seawater gushed in.
"Not enough."
Xiaqiu knew that Arlong's ships needed to be struck four times to sink, and this vessel, capable of navigating the Grand Line, could not be sunk with just one hit.
So, Xiaqiu circled around and charged again.
