Chapter Eight: The Capture
In the early morning, the sun slowly rose from the distance, casting its light down and breaking the night's hold.
Narl Village became lively as smoke began to rise from chimneys, and the villagers started their daily work.
A seagull, carrying a backpack, flew across the horizon and landed on an island, standing on a rock while tilting its neck to call out.
Hearing the call, many people stepped out of their houses and approached it, pulling out coins to place in its pouch while taking a newspaper in return.
"Mom, I'm going out to play!"
In one of the houses in Narl Village, an eight or nine-year-old boy quickly finished his breakfast, slammed his bowl down on the table, stood up, and shouted towards his mother who was busy not far away.
His mother was a gentle woman. Looking at her son, she reminded him, "Eli, you can go out to play, but don't run around. The Navy will come today to collect security fees, so stay away from the village chief's residence and avoid any trouble with the Navy. If you see them, keep your distance."
"I'll remember," the boy named Eli nodded.
The woman continued, "And definitely don't go near the beach. A giant sea fish has been spotted in the waters around the island; be careful."
"Can I go to the beach to collect shells?"
Eli looked up at his mother and asked.
The woman shook her head. "No, it's too dangerous."
"Okay."
Eli nodded and ran out of the house, heading toward the village square.
There stood a sturdy tree with lush green leaves forming a canopy overhead.
Eli arrived under the tree and quietly waited. Before long, a girl came to this spot.
“Leah.”
Eli waved at Leah.
“Eli.”
Leah smiled brightly, revealing her missing front tooth.
“Is Angelo not here yet?” Leah asked curiously as she walked over to Eli.
“I don’t know what he’s doing,” Eli replied with a hint of dissatisfaction.
“We just have to wait a little longer.”
Leah nodded, and the two stood together, continuing to wait.
After a long while, a figure finally appeared in the distance, running toward them.
“Angelo, you’re so late.”
Eli called out with some annoyance upon seeing him.
“Today Navy is coming to the village. I begged my father for a long time before he agreed to let me come out to play.” The boy named Angelo was slightly shorter, with a bowl haircut that made him look a bit awkward.
Hearing this, Leah waved her hand dismissively and said, “It’s fine; let’s go have fun.”
Angelo looked at the two of them and asked, “So what are we going to do today?”
“I originally wanted to go to the beach to collect seashells, but my mother has a huge sea fish, so we can’t go,” Eli said, his expression tinged with regret.
Leah added, “My father also warned me about it. That fish is six or seven meters long; it could even capsize a boat, so he told me to stay away from the sea.”
"Don't worry."
Angelo smiled and said, "My father told me that today the Navy would come here, and he would ask the Navy to handle it."
"That's great!"
Eli cheered immediately upon hearing this.
...
"Lieutenant Krumay, this is the security fee for this time."
The village chief handed a cloth bag to the man in front of him wearing a Navy uniform, his expression somewhat anxious.
"Very good."
Lieutenant Krumay opened the cloth bag, glanced at the berries inside, nodded in satisfaction, and then said, "Our Navy Branch 154 will continue to protect Narl Village."
With that, Lieutenant Krumay yawned and said, "It's getting late; we should leave."
However, the village chief replied, "Lieutenant Krumay, Narl Village is currently facing some trouble, and we hope the Navy can help us deal with it."
"Trouble?"
Lieutenant Krumay looked at the village chief and asked, "Were you attacked by pirates? But we didn't receive any information from you."
"No."
The village chief quickly replied, "It's a sea fish."
"A sea fish?" Krumay furrowed his brow and asked, "What is there to worry about with a sea fish?"
The village chief said, "This sea fish is quite large, at least over six meters long, and it's been lurking near the island. Now, no one dares to go to the shore."
"I see," Lieutenant Krumay nodded and then said, "It's just a sea fish; we will help you kill it."
"That would be a trouble for Admiral," the village chief quickly expressed his gratitude.
However, Lieutenant Krumay snorted and said, "To deal with such a sea fish, we might need to use cannonballs, and it may require the personal intervention of the Colonel. Our resources will be heavily taxed."
"I understand, I understand..." The village chief hurriedly took out a cloth bag filled with berries, bulging more than the previous one.
"Leave it to us," Lieutenant Krumay nodded, accepting the bag and returning to the battleship with the Navy soldiers.
"Colonel Belial, this is how it is," Krumay said as he handed over both bags of money to the man sitting behind the desk.
"Dealing with a sea fish? What a troublesome task; this amount of money is hardly enough," Colonel Belial grumbled as he looked at the reward for handling the sea fish.
Krumay quickly replied, "The village is quite poor; this is already the most they can offer as a reward."
"Then let's help them out."
Belio nodded, putting away the two cloth bags. "The Colonel is still waiting for the security fee at Manro Town's Branch Base. We must return by tomorrow at the latest. You are responsible for this matter; lead the Sailors to kill that sea fish, and you can use the Cannon."
"Understood."
Lieutenant Krumay quickly replied, then stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him, his expression turning grim.
I am the one in charge, while the Sailors will carry out the action. Even if we use the Cannon, it will ultimately be Branch Base that foots the bill.
But the rewards will be pocketed entirely by you, with no thought of sharing.
What a greedy superior.
Krumay's face was dark as he left the cabin and made his way to the deck, ordering four Sailors to go to the village and ask the village chief for some freshly slaughtered pigs and cows. He then instructed them to prepare large fish hooks, fishing nets, crossbows, and spear guns.
Soon, all the Sailors sprang into action, beginning preparations for capturing in the sea.
...
In the evening, Xiaqiu swam with its massive body into the Harbor, immediately catching a whiff of blood.
What is this?
Following the scent of blood, Xiaqiu moved toward the direction of the Harbor, where a Naval Battleship was anchored. Its enormous hull exuded an oppressive aura.
Nearby in the water, a Lamb floated, its body still stained with blood, releasing a strong metallic scent into the water.
What is this?
The moment Xiaqiu spotted the Lamb, its eyes lit up; finally, it could change its meal.
Xiaqiu swam toward the Lamb, getting close enough to open its mouth wide and prepare to take a bite.
But just as the mouth was about to close, Xiaqiu retracted its body, opening its large mouth to emit a silent mockery.
Did you think I would fall for that?
The Naval Battleship and Lamb were ensnared by an iron chain, surrounded by a circle of fishing nets.
This was clearly a trap to capture prey.
And in this part of the sea, the only creature worth such an elaborate setup was none other than itself.
This was obviously aimed at it.
How could it possibly be fooled?
