Every year, my sister-in-law takes full responsibility for the National Day trip. This time, she meticulously handled all the itinerary arrangements. I've been busy with a project lately and haven't had the time to pay attention to the travel details.
Two days before departure, my sister-in-law sent me the itinerary.
"Wait, why did you book a flight for eleven-thirty at night?" I asked. Didn't we usually leave in the morning?
She was packing her luggage and glanced up at me, saying, "The price difference between a morning flight and an evening flight can be several hundred."
"Besides, taking a midnight flight is great; we save on one night's accommodation."
I frowned. "Fine, you handle it." I didn't want to argue with her and went back to focusing on my documents.
By the time I finished my work, it was already ten o'clock at night. I hurried to the airport, feeling exhausted and sore all over.
I wanted to grab a cup of coffee to perk myself up, but just as I reached the coffee shop entrance, my sister-in-law pulled me back.
She looked displeased. "Wang Zixuan, do you have money to burn? The prices at the airport are outrageous; why not buy a cup outside and bring it in?"
Though annoyed, I didn't argue with her. The trip had just begun, and I didn't want to create any conflict.
When we finally reached the waiting area, I realized she had booked me an Economy Class ticket.
I frowned again. "Brother, I remember saying I wanted to fly First Class."
Before my brother could respond, my sister-in-law jumped in: "Wang Zixuan, what makes you so special? We're all flying Economy Class; why should you get treated differently?"
"Besides, sitting in the front is so expensive; that money could cover several nights in a nice hotel for our family."
I was both angry and amused. "I'm spending my own money; what does it have to do with you?"
"How can you say that? Your money? What about your brother's money? What about your parents' money?" my sister-in-law's voice was sharp.
"So you're the only one with money, huh?"
I couldn't be bothered to respond to her and went straight to find the staff to upgrade my seat.
"I'm sorry, but there's only one seat left in First Class," the attendant said.
My sister-in-law shouted loudly, "See? There's only one seat left, and you still want to waste money?"
"Do you have any idea how hard our family has worked and saved for this trip?"
"Can't you show some understanding?"
"No!" I looked at her expressionlessly. "I earn my money; why shouldn't I spend it?"
"You..." My sister-in-law trembled with anger. "Yugang, look at her!"
My brother held her back and gently comforted her, "Alright, don't get upset. Since my sister wants to sit in the front, let her."
"Hmph!" She huffed heavily and turned away.
My brother smiled apologetically at me. "Sister, don't be angry; your sister-in-law is just thinking about the family."
"I know," I smiled back at him. "I'm going to take care of the paperwork."
By the time I changed my boarding pass, they were already waiting for me at the security checkpoint. My sister-in-law looked displeased, but after my brother reassured her a few times, she calmed down a bit.
Once I found my seat and sat down, the plane had already taken off. I fastened my seatbelt, covered myself with a blanket, and closed my eyes to rest.
When I opened my eyes again, the sky was brightening. I checked my phone and saw that my sister-in-law had already sent our accommodation information to the Family Group chat.
I opened the photo and took a closer look. It was a Youth Hostel, a six-person dorm with bunk beds. I clicked on the reviews and saw that the ratings were not very good.
"It's too old; the bathroom and toilet are both broken."
"In the morning, you have to wait to shower, and the water pressure is low; you can't get clean at all."
"The environment is terrible; it's not clean at all."
"There are no charging outlets; I can't even charge my phone."
I raised an eyebrow and opened a review site to find a nearby five-star hotel. After getting off the plane, I told them, "I'm not staying at the Youth Hostel; I've booked a hotel for myself."
My sister-in-law's expression changed: "Wang Zixuan, what are you doing this time?"
"Why change hotels when everything is fine?"
"I’m not used to sharing a room with others," I replied honestly.
Over the years, I had grown accustomed to living alone and couldn't stand sharing a space with anyone else.
"Then why didn't you book a hotel in advance?" My sister-in-law scoffed. "I think you're just trying to make things difficult for us."
