"Rest assured, I, Hu Lingyun, have always kept my promises," Hu Lingyun said, shaking off the previous gloom. His dark eyes fixed intently on the petite girl before him, who was brimming with untold strength. Curiously, he asked, "How did you know this would save Linglong?"
With his question, Qing Luan had no intention of hiding anything. Instead, she explained gravely, "If one can express their grievances, they are not true grievances. But I found that Sister Linglong was unwilling to voice even her complaints, which made me realize she had resigned herself to death." She hesitated for a moment, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I slapped her twice to wake her up and scold her, then used Rui'er to provoke her. It was a desperate measure; if she hadn't awakened, we would have had to prepare for her funeral—thankfully, she still cared for Rui'er. Otherwise..." She left the rest unsaid.
Hu Lingyun understood the unspoken implications behind her words and felt a wave of sadness wash over him. "I searched high and low for renowned doctors, but all they told me was to prepare for the worst. I lost all hope until Uncle Lin mentioned you had cured his son's loss of appetite. That's when I thought you might be able to cook something delicious to save her. I never expected you would use such methods; you've truly impressed me."
Logically speaking, Qing Luan was only ten years old; her ruthless methods seemed entirely out of place for someone her age, leaving many puzzled. However, Hu Lingyun had witnessed her intelligence before and knew she had saved his sister. She was a benefactor; there was no reason to doubt her—whatever Qing Luan said was likely right.
"Hu Ye, don't elevate me too high; this is merely a desperate gamble," Qing Luan replied with a shy smile, choosing not to pursue the topic further. "But while Sister Linglong has gained some understanding, she still faces many challenges. The first is her weakened body from confinement, and then..."
"I know," Hu Lingyun interrupted Qing Luan earnestly. "This time, I hope she can resolve everything on her own. No matter what happens, I will support her from behind."
"If it were you in her place, what would you do?" She asked curiously, fearing that what she might say could be shocking or unacceptable.
"I..." Hu Lingyun began to respond but was interrupted by Jin'er’s anxious shout. The two exchanged a quick glance and turned back in unison.
"Miss! Miss!" Jin'er cried out in panic as she saw the chicken soup that had been consumed now spilled out. Her eyes brimmed with tears as she waved her hands helplessly, unsure of what to do.
"What happened?" Qing Luan asked as she stepped forward with concern.
"Miss... Miss has thrown up all the chicken soup she drank," Jin'er hurriedly replied.
"Linglong," anger flickered in Hu Lingyun's eyes as he questioned her tone, but he was cut off by Qing Luan.
"Her stomach is hurt; she needs to eat light food. Chicken soup is too greasy, and vomiting is normal," Qing Luan said with a frown. Although her tone was casual, there was a hint of worry in her heart, fearing that the situation might not be so simple.
There are people who want to eat, who feel very hungry, but whatever they consume reflexively comes back up. That truly is a torment. She was concerned that Hu Linglong was experiencing just that—given the backward medical practices of ancient times, it seemed hopeless.
"Brother, I didn't mean to. I just drank the chicken soup and suddenly vomited," she explained proactively, knowing where her brother's anger stemmed from. She also felt grateful for Qing Luan's understanding.
"Go fetch a doctor," Hu Lingyun said, his brow relaxing slightly, though a trace of concern still lingered in his eyes.
"Yes!" Jin'er replied and hurried out.
For several consecutive days, Hu Linglong's condition showed no signs of improvement. The doctors changed one after another, and the amount of medicine prescribed could fill a box, yet nothing worked. Even the medicine she managed to swallow came back up, confirming Qing Luan's worst fears had come true.
