"This person is beyond help; we need to find a doctor. What use am I?" After hearing the story, Qing Luan felt no sympathy for Hu Linglong; she thought she deserved it.
Was it worth it to be so desperate over a man?
"I apologize for my abruptness, Qing Luan. Please don't take offense," Hu Lingyun said politely, knowing he needed her help. "I understand you are not a doctor, but Uncle Lin mentioned that you cured his daughter Xuan'er of her eating disorder, which is why I came to ask for your assistance in saving my sister. If you can help her, I will surely reward you generously!" She was his only family, and he would spend any amount of money to save her.
"Generous reward?" Qing Luan's eyes flickered as she made a decision.
Qing Luan's gaze locked onto Hu Lingyun's eyes. As a businessman, he was adept at reading people's expressions and spoke plainly: "If you save my sister, I will give you a house so that your sister and the maid have a place to stay, along with a substantial reward. What do you think?"
She intended to go, but matters of the heart were complicated. "What if I can't save her?" This was her way of securing an escape route.
"If you can't save her, I won't hold it against you. I'll give you one hundred taels of silver for your travel expenses. How does that sound?" He wanted to ensure she would come first and deal with the rest later.
After weighing her options, the innate shrewdness of a born merchant surfaced within her. This was a deal that wouldn't result in losses, so after a moment of hesitation, she reluctantly agreed.
Although Uncle Lin and Aunt Lin were reluctant to part with her, they knew Xuan'er was safe now. The cook could prepare suitable meals for Xuan'er, and the matter concerning the Hu family was urgent. They reminded Qing Luan to return once everything was settled; the Lin residence could still support them.
With red-rimmed eyes, she boarded the carriage, reflecting on the harmony and generosity of the Lin family. Then she thought about Hu Lingyun's protective nature towards his sister and felt that the Chen residence truly was not a place for humans; those who lived there were nothing short of ravenous beasts.
Some things she could vaguely guess in her heart, but she dared not inquire further for fear of being discovered. She didn't want Tide and Qin'er to be implicated; that was something she could never bear. She had already suffered enough loss and needed to cultivate herself patiently while slowly building her own power. One day, she would strike back and seek revenge.
The Hu family lived outside the town; after quite some time on the road and then into the city, they finally arrived. Qing Luan's thoughts were restless, preventing her from sleeping, while Tide and Qin'er slept soundly despite the bumpy ride.
The Hu Family residence was vast, much larger than the Lin Residence, which was the first thought that crossed Qing Luan's mind.
"You're all tired from the journey today. You should rest first. Tomorrow, I'll take you to see my sister," Hu Lingyun said. Although he was eager to rescue his sister, he understood that this young girl was not someone to be trifled with. It was better to make proper arrangements and address matters tomorrow.
"First, prepare something for us to eat," Qing Luan replied, not being unreasonable. She had too many things on her mind and wanted to resolve them as soon as possible. "I'll go check on your sister shortly." Some things could be postponed, but a life could not.
"Then I’ll trouble you, Qing Luan," Hu Lingyun expressed his gratitude.
"Taking money to help others is just business; being overly polite would seem insincere," Qing Luan said, still wary of him. Her tone lacked the warmth that Uncle Lin and Aunt Lin had when they spoke.
Hu Lingyun chuckled but did not respond. Instead, he turned to instruct the maidservants to prepare food and arranged for three rooms to be tidied up. Once everything was in order, he finally took a moment to rest.
As she looked at the pavilions and towers in the courtyard, adorned with exotic flowers and plants, Qing Luan felt puzzled. Hu Lingyun did not seem unattractive, and his family was wealthy, so why hadn’t he taken a wife? The absence of a woman managing the household made things rather chaotic; it was no wonder that maidservants were becoming bold and taking liberties.
