The convoy quickly drove onto an even more dilapidated road, the tires struggling in the muck, each bump feeling like it was tearing apart the desolate land. The thickets on either side of the road grew denser, the branches and vines resembling clawing monsters, seemingly ready to swallow this isolated convoy whole. The atmosphere inside the vehicle became increasingly oppressive, a heavy silence enveloping everyone.
Isabella sat in the car, feeling her heartbeat begin to quicken. As the vehicle gradually delved deeper into this muddy and jungle-filled area, a subtle sense of tension rose from her core. Despite her efforts to remain calm and not show any emotional fluctuations on her face, the alarm bells in her mind had already begun to ring quietly. She knew that this jungle was not only their destination but also potentially harbored countless unknown dangers.
Across from her, Samuel clearly could not hide his fear. His breathing became rapid, his gaze darting around as he desperately sought something to reassure him. Although he had familiarized himself with the situation in this region before leaving home, being immersed in this desolate and ruined jungle brought forth an uncontrollable fear that surged like a tide.
Samuel's voice trembled noticeably as he muttered under his breath, "Damn it... what is going on here? This place is too strange." He turned to Allison, trying to find some comfort in her presence. "Allison... do you think there are Guerrillas in this jungle?"
Allison looked up at him, her expression still calm, though worry was quietly taking root within her. She gently shook her head, attempting to make her voice sound steady. "There have indeed been reports of Guerrilla activity here, but we have mercenaries and Jonas with us; they know how to handle things." She tried to soothe Samuel with her words, but she understood that the unknowns lurking in this jungle were more concerning than the Guerrillas themselves.
Samuel clearly did not feel reassured by Allison's words; instead, his fear intensified. His gaze kept flitting among the others in the vehicle before finally settling on Raymond, who was armed and alert at the front. Unable to contain himself any longer, he leaned forward, his voice trembling. "Raymond, what's the situation here? Are we really safe? Are there any Guerrillas or... or anything else nearby?"
Raymond kept a vigilant eye on their surroundings while glancing back at Samuel. His expression remained calm and composed, carrying a soldier's characteristic steadiness. He waved his hand dismissively, signaling for Samuel to relax. "Take it easy, Samuel. The vehicle is equipped with advanced detection equipment that can sense nearby living beings—whether animals or people—we'll know ahead of time. It may look desolate here, but so far everything seems normal; there are no unusual activities."
Despite Raymond's attempts to reassure Samuel with logic and technology, Samuel's fear could not be completely quelled. His eyes remained glued to the window as he nervously observed the treacherous jungle outside. To him, that endless green hell seemed to conceal countless potential threats; any rustle could signify deadly danger.
The rustling leaves and occasional distant bird calls—ordinary sounds of nature—were amplified a thousandfold in Samuel's ears. Every tiny noise made his heart race as if something might suddenly leap out from deep within the jungle at any moment. His hands gripped the armrests tightly, knuckles turning white from exertion as his gaze hardly strayed from outside.
The convoy continued its slow progress along the muddy road; Raymond occasionally glanced back and noticed Samuel's unusual tension but understood that this was not a problem that could be resolved quickly. He sighed softly and refocused on his task while remaining alert. He knew that reactions like Samuel's were not uncommon, especially for those entering such dangerous environments for the first time. Nevertheless, he had to keep himself and the team calm because real crises might still lie ahead.
Jonas noticed that Samuel's unease was gradually spreading through the group. He understood well that panic could quickly infect others like a virus once it took hold within a team; it could even shake the confidence of those mercenaries who were otherwise composed. In such an environment, maintaining calm was crucial; even a hint of fear could lead to catastrophic consequences.
He was about to speak up to quiet Samuel when suddenly Samuel seemed to see something outside; he leaned toward the window with wide eyes and screamed in terror, "Oh my God! There are people in the jungle! I saw someone!"
Samuel's voice shattered the silence inside the vehicle, causing everyone to turn and look at him in surprise. Jonas immediately sensed the atmosphere shift, the previously orderly mercenaries now on edge due to Samuel's scream. Several mercenaries quickly adjusted their weapons, scanning the jungle outside with wary and puzzled expressions.
Jonas grabbed Samuel's shoulder, forcing him to turn and meet his gaze. "Calm down! Samuel, what did you see?" Jonas's tone was stern and low, trying to pull Samuel back to reality and shake off the panic-induced illusions.
Samuel's breath came in quick gasps, his face pale as he trembled, pointing towards the jungle outside. "I... I really saw someone, just behind those bushes! They were watching us... I know I’m not mistaken!" His voice quivered with desperation, as if the sight before him was apocalyptic.
While soothing Samuel, Jonas quickly scanned the jungle outside. His gaze was calm and focused; years of battlefield training had taught him not to let panic cloud his judgment. However, no matter how carefully he observed, there were no signs of anything unusual beyond the swaying trees and grass.
He muttered a curse under his breath, realizing that Samuel's panic had reached a critical point. Such baseless fear was undoubtedly the most dangerous, as it could swiftly incite chaos within the team. Lowering his voice, he said to Samuel, "Samuel, you need to calm down. There’s no one out there like you said—just shadows and changes in light in the jungle. You can’t let fear control you; otherwise, we’ll all be in danger."
Samuel's expression remained fearful, but Jonas's voice carried an undeniable authority that helped him regain some composure. He pressed his lips tightly together and fell silent but continued to grip the armrest of his seat with trembling fingers, his gaze fixed on the window as if ready to confront the "danger" that might reappear at any moment.
