Two little girls invited me and Brother Biao to have a cup of Mixue Ice City each. Deputy Director Jiang from the Business Bureau called me: "Kid, my granddaughter is back from vacation and still doesn't believe that those little lumps on me were taken care of by you. When do you have time? Come over and teach her a lesson; she shouldn't be flaunting her half-baked skills!"
He sounded like he was enjoying the drama. I didn't want to go; what does a little girl know? It would be pointless to argue with her. "Old man, I've been busy lately. Let's talk about it later."
The old man insisted, "Then make some time soon."
There's a saying, "In the world, one cannot act freely." Two days later, Mr. Zhao's driver, Brother Qin, drove a BMW 7 Series to Wangji Funeral Company and directly found Boss Chen: "Mr. Zhao wants to discuss something with Xiao Lin Brothers; please excuse him."
Boss Chen readily agreed, saying, "Just give him a call; you didn’t need to come all this way. Please send my regards to Mr. Zhao..." He had that annoying, eager demeanor.
I chatted with Brother Qin pleasantly and comfortably.
Brother Qin said, "Brother, my mom can stand up straight now!" His voice choked with emotion as he spoke.
I replied, "Brother Qin, that's just the beginning. Once I'm done with my work, I'll prescribe more medicine; she must keep taking it and adjusting! I can't guarantee anything else, but if she sticks with it, she'll be back to normal in less than six months."
Brother Qin nodded enthusiastically, "Good brother, I'll listen to you."
I also mentioned how I saved Sister Liu at Xishan Villa; Qin Zhijian had heard about it too: "You're impressive! Sister Liu is the big sister of our Jiangbei Literary Circle; next time you see her, ask for an autograph for me!"
I said, "That shouldn't be a problem; she reached out to me last time and said she'd arrange another meeting."
Brother Qin looked at me with envy and admiration: "Brother, you're amazing!"
I also told him about the ten thousand yuan Sister Liu gave me last time.
Brother Qin dismissed it: "That's what she should give; people like her earn money easily; they shouldn't feel burdened by it."
As we passed Mr. Zhao's villa without turning off, I asked, "Brother Qin, where are we going?"
Qin Jian turned his face slightly: "Deputy Director Jiang's house."
I thought to myself: The old man is quite crafty.
When we arrived, it was Madam Jiang who came out to greet us, followed by none other than the “Ponytail” I had met with Brother Biao last time.
"Why are you here?"
Both of them exclaimed simultaneously.
Madam Jiang was surprised. "Have you met before?"
Ponytail blushed. "He helped me get my wallet back..."
We went up to the second floor and arrived at Elder Jiang's room. The old man was sitting with Mr. Zhao, drinking tea. Upon seeing us enter, he gestured, "Everyone sit down and have a drink to calm your nerves."
He pointed at Ponytail and introduced her. "This is my granddaughter, Jiang Qiuying, an outstanding student from Peking University Health Science Center. She's the one who wants to 'challenge' you... Next, I want to see whether formal training is superior or if the 'wild practitioners' are better..."
Not only did Mr. Zhao wear a teasing smile, but Madam Jiang also sat nearby, appearing unconcerned and ready to watch the show.
Ponytail looked defiant and took on the posture of a thesis defense mentor. "Lin, could you share your thoughts on the illness my grandfather has?"
I found this behavior rather tedious, but everyone else seemed to take it seriously. Remembering Ponytail's earlier arrogance and rudeness, I decided to tease her a bit and test her temperament.
With a plan in mind, I took a sip of tea and spoke slowly. "A lipoma is essentially a localized stagnation—a lump of hardened tissue that the body doesn’t need; it’s a gathering of negative energy, a mass that blood and qi cannot nourish. Therefore, treating the symptoms means softening and dispersing this lump."
Ponytail nodded thoughtfully. "I've seen the prescription you provided; can you explain the pharmacology behind it?"
I continued my explanation. "There are many herbs that soften hard masses and disperse lumps; let me focus on Zhe Bei Mu, Soapthorn, and Selfheal Herb in the prescription.
—There are two types of Fritillaria: Fritillaria Cirrhosa and Zhe Bei Mu. Fritillaria excels at resolving phlegm and clearing heat phlegm because it has a cold nature. While Fritillaria Cirrhosa is good for nourishing lung yin and can be used for dry cough due to yin deficiency with Chuan Bei Pi Pa Gao, it’s not as effective as Zhe Bei Mu for dispersing lumps. That’s why we use Zhe Bei Mu here.
Soapthorn is powerful due to its strong penetrating ability; it can break up stagnant blood and resolve blockages—wherever there’s a blockage or mass, Soapthorn will do the job.
Selfheal Herb also softens hard masses; it wilts in summer, indicating its cold nature. It can clear liver fire and resolve stagnation, making it effective for lumps formed by qi stagnation combined with phlegm, such as many thyroid nodules treated best with Selfheal Herb.
Zhe Bei Mu softens the lipoma while Selfheal Herb disperses the stagnant qi within it, clearing out heat. Finally, the vigorous Soapthorn charges in fearlessly to break apart and shatter the lipoma."
At this point, I felt compelled to continue: "This step is akin to surgery in Western medicine but only addresses symptoms. Next, we need to understand how this lipoma forms.
Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that lipomas require a pathogenic factor called phlegm-dampness for nourishment. Phlegm-dampness accumulates into phlegm nodules, forming hard phlegm pillars tightly wrapped in phlegm-dampness that calls upon more phlegm-dampness to gather around it until it becomes a hard lipoma.
Thus, to address the source of the lipoma, we must first resolve phlegm. The best partners for resolving phlegm are Dried Tangerine Peel and Ban Xia; they are key ingredients in the classic Er Chen Tang for phlegm resolution.
Dried Tangerine Peel and Ban Xia can almost handle all body phlegm-dampness; however, for particularly stubborn phlegm, we add a bit of White Mustard Seed. White Mustard Seed is very warming and specifically targets chronic cold phlegm—it’s an enemy of 'old slow bronchitis.' So combining White Mustard Seed with Radish Seed and Perilla Seed creates the famous Three Seeds Nourishing Soup."
As I spoke about these remedies, everyone except Ponytail seemed lost in confusion. However, seeing Ponytail's increasingly serious expression made others exchange glances: this girl might be in for a tough time today.
Nevertheless, Ponytail's final attitude reassured everyone: she neither got angry nor flustered but respectfully bowed slightly to me and said, "I truly learned something today!"
This left me momentarily speechless.
"Is this really the same Ponytail who not only cuts in line but is also unreasonable and speaks harshly?"
That evening, I stayed at the Jiang family for dinner. Ponytail Jiang Qiuying had already been won over by my knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This wasn't something you could grasp just by reading medical textbooks or what those rote-learning professors and associate professors could teach!
As I requested, Old Man Jiang couldn't drink alcohol; since he wasn't drinking, no one else did either.
It seemed that, quite unintentionally, the dinner table turned into a one-on-one tutoring session with Jiang Qiuying:
"What remedies are there in Traditional Chinese Medicine for insomnia?"
"Is Traditional Chinese Medicine suitable for nearsightedness?"
...
Watching me answer each question confidently, I didn't know how effective my explanations were, but at least I had completely conquered her in theory.
As we were finishing our meal, I was about to suggest leaving when Jiang Qiuying stopped me: "Um..."
She took a deep breath: "I'll call you Teacher Lin!"
I was momentarily stunned.
The others, including Old Man Jiang, didn't laugh; in fact, there was a hint of approval in Old Man Jiang's gaze.
"You can just call me Xiao Lin," I said, feeling my face heat up.
Old Man Jiang interjected: "Call him 'Teacher Kobayashi' instead."
Ignoring the curious looks from everyone present, Jiang Qiuying eagerly made a request: "Teacher Kobayashi, about my classmate—the chubby round-faced girl you met last time..."
She glanced around and urged, "You can't tell anyone! Her name is Lu Anqi, and she has a kind of ringworm on her legs that she's had since childhood. It started out the size of a one-yuan coin, but now it's not only larger but has spread to many places on her body...
When it flares up, red rashes appear on her skin with thick white scales on top. It's not only unsightly but also very itchy... The doctor said it's psoriasis.
Can you help her think of a solution? If it were just on her legs and body, it wouldn't be too bad, but she's afraid it will gradually spread to her hands and face!
She's almost depressed about it now!"
At this point, she looked at me anxiously, as if fearing I wouldn't agree or wouldn't have any solutions.
