"Stop drinking, you're drunk." Gu Bei took the wine jar from Ye Xiaohan's hands and placed it out of her reach.
Ye Xiaohan stubbornly reached for it, but she was always just a bit too far away.
"I'm not drunk, give me the wine." Ye Xiaohan's tone sounded calm, almost convincing, if one ignored her increasingly unfocused gaze.
She believed her mind was still clear, but in reality, her movements had slowed significantly, and when she stood up, she swayed unsteadily.
"Give it to me!" Ye Xiaohan stretched out her hand, almost touching the jar, but Gu Bei deftly moved it even further away.
"Don't drink anymore," Gu Bei advised. "I know you're hurting inside; I feel the same way. If Qi saw you torturing yourself like this, she'd be upset too."
Hearing his mention of Qi's name ignited a surge of anger within Ye Xiaohan. "How could she be upset? She's already dead! Do you really believe in reincarnation? It's all just self-deception!"
In moments of helplessness, that little bit of self-comfort was utterly useless.
Her voice trembled slightly; Qi was the first person she had connected with, and over time they had developed a bond that felt like family.
Gu Bei held her tightly in his embrace.
He felt the same way; even without blood ties, Qi was his sister, and that would never change.
"In the future, let's visit her more often and bring everyone along. Qi loved lively gatherings; it would make her very happy," Gu Bei insisted, ignoring Ye Xiaohan's struggles to free herself.
His grip was gentle enough not to hurt her but strong enough to prevent her from escaping.
Ye Xiaohan wasn't angry at Gu Bei; she was just sad and a bit guilty. After all this time, she still regretted not keeping Qi by her side.
"I'm sorry; I didn't mean to take it out on you," Ye Xiaohan said softly as she relaxed in Gu Bei's embrace and apologized quietly.
Gu Bei could never be angry with Ye Xiaohan. He gently patted her back. "I understand; we share the same feelings. I know."
The warmth of his body enveloped her, soothing her dampened spirit. Ye Xiaohan turned and embraced Gu Bei.
Fortunately, someone had always been by her side, unwavering and steadfast. In any situation, she could rely on someone for support instead of facing everything alone.
"Thank you," Ye Xiaohan said gratefully. "Thank you for saving me back then, and thank you for being with me all these years."
Gu Bei smiled as he held her tightly, as if he were cradling the most precious treasure in his life. "What nonsense is that? It's only right that I stay by your side. From now on, we will always be together. A hundred years together, growing old side by side."
His gentle voice carried sincerity and warmth, comforting Ye Xiaohan. She hugged Gu Bei tightly, reluctant to let go.
"It's getting late; you should rest early." Today had been exhausting, especially emotionally draining, which took a toll on her energy. Gu Bei glanced at the time and prepared to return to his room.
His room was right next door; it was a small selfish desire of Gu Bei's to stay as close to Ye Xiaohan as possible.
Upon hearing his farewell, Ye Xiaohan did not release him but whispered softly in his ear, "It's getting late; are you staying over tonight?"
Their relationship had long since evolved into one of deep mutual understanding. Gu Bei had even mentioned marriage before. However, Ye Xiaohan had hesitated and hadn’t had the chance to respond.
Many events had transpired afterward that left them with neither the time nor the energy to discuss such matters, and so it lingered unresolved.
Yet in Ye Xiaohan's heart, Gu Bei was already the one she envisioned spending her life with. For a woman in ancient times, inviting her beloved to share a night together was something too shy to speak of.
But for Ye Xiaohan, who grew up in an era of free love, this felt entirely normal. A genuine relationship where both parties earnestly nurtured their feelings was more than enough.
"Xiao Han, what did you just say?" Gu Bei had indeed heard her words but found himself doubting his ears and asked again in disbelief.
In Gu Bei's mind, Ye Xiaohan was undoubtedly the person he wanted to spend his life with. However, sharing a night together was something that should come after marriage, wasn't it?
Despite these thoughts, he couldn't deny that his heart was filled with anticipation.
Ye Xiaohan smiled silently; it was precisely this aspect of Gu Bei—his admiration and respect for her—that gave her the courage to let go of her past and truly embrace this world, remaining in a place that originally did not belong to her.
A feather-light kiss landed on Gu Bei's face as Ye Xiaohan slightly tilted her head to look at him.
As if enchanted, Gu Bei felt his body frozen in that moment, obeying Ye Xiaohan's every command.
That night, Gu Bei stayed.
The next afternoon, when the two of them walked out of the house together, everyone in the General's residence finally felt relieved about Gu Bei.
The General's feelings for his wife were well-known throughout the household. However, despite his valor on the battlefield, he acted just like an ordinary young man in front of her, hesitating and making others anxious.
At last, he had fulfilled his long-held wish and embraced the beauty.
After they had shared intimate moments, Ye Xiaohan and Gu Bei grew even closer. Their relationship gradually shifted from lovers to something akin to a married couple; they were only missing a wedding.
Even amidst their busy schedules, they would try to carve out time to wander aimlessly through the streets together. A simple meal together would see them serving each other their favorite dishes.
And at night, cuddling together, even trivial matters became interesting simply because they were with each other.
Within three feet of them, it felt as if a pink aura surrounded them at all times.
Their unabashed display of affection initially made others blush and turn away, but eventually even Luo Jingxian could look on without changing expression.
Though it seemed like they were constantly showing off their love, in reality, they didn't spend all their time together; both had their own responsibilities to attend to.
Ye Xiaohan had come to accept Gu Bei's help without feeling indebted. Instead of thinking about repaying him, she hoped to utilize his resources to improve her own business. Later, she planned to invest her earnings into Gu Bei's endeavors, becoming a solid support for him.
Not long after Qingming Festival, Ye Xiaohan returned to Jiangnan, where two familiar faces awaited her.
"Greetings, Boss," Li Yi said with a smile as he brought Round along to pay their respects.
Ye Xiaohan quickly stopped him. "No need for that. You must be tired from the journey; take a break first and enjoy your time here." Her gaze fell on Round beside Li Yi as she reached out to pat her head and remarked, "You've grown so much; you're quite the young lady now."
If Six Seven were still alive, he would be this age now.
When he left back then, Six Seven still held onto the promise made with Round, but now it was impossible to fulfill.
Li Yi and Round were both aware of this matter and felt quite saddened. They comforted each other for a while until Ye Xiaohan shifted the topic elsewhere.
Those who should be remembered will always remain in the heart. The pain that should be forgotten should also be let go in a timely manner.
After Li Yi arrived, he greatly assisted Ye Xiaohan's business. His lifelong experience in commerce often helped Ye Xiaohan choose the right path, saving a lot of unnecessary waste.
Gu Bei could not reveal that he was still alive; he was now officially considered dead in Dongchuan.
To facilitate hiding, they brought Six Yang along this time.
Six Yang had previously been following Gu Bei closely, blending into the military camp and immersing himself in various studies. Shen Ru was very satisfied with Six Yang and often guided him, considering himself to be half of Six Yang's teacher.
Gu Bei felt both gratified and pained by his rapid progress.
Compared to before, Six Yang had become much quieter. The once bright and sunny face rarely showed a smile now. Occasionally, when Ye Xiaohan teased him, a glimpse of the youthful spirit would emerge.
The separation of life and death was an even more intense blow for a simple and emotionally rich youth.
