"Yes," Ye Xiaohan said without hiding her thoughts. "Gu Bei sent a message a couple of days ago. He’s coming to Jiangnan, and he should arrive soon."
She glanced at Murong Jing, only to find that his expression showed no surprise.
Murong Jing smiled and said, "As expected, he is not dead. Only that fool Murong Cheng would believe that the esteemed Flying Dragon General could be killed by his assassination."
"It seems you haven't done anything else," Ye Xiaohan replied coldly. "You were also one of those who sent assassins."
Both were equally guilty; they were enemies.
Murong Jing's smile faded, and a look of contemplation crossed his face. After a moment, he said, "If I told you that I never really intended to kill him, would you believe me?"
"I wouldn't."
Ye Xiaohan's response was quick, almost as soon as he finished speaking. "The only reason you wouldn’t want to kill him is if he didn’t obstruct your ambitions. Since we are already on opposing sides, there’s no need for such self-deceiving words."
Even if Murong Jing had no intention of killing Gu Bei as a person, the identity of the Flying Dragon General had to be eliminated.
"True enough. It’s just me deceiving myself," Murong Jing admitted, leaning his weight against the window frame. He bent his arm back and gazed at the soft white clouds drifting lazily by.
If he hadn’t harbored that ambition in the first place, would things be different now?
A layer of gloom clouded Murong Jing's pitch-black eyes as he felt shocked and disgusted by his own regret over this matter.
The study fell silent once more, with only the sound of Ye Xiaohan occasionally turning pages and tapping on the abacus breaking the stillness of the room.
Murong Jing, rarely seen taking the initiative, had left early.
However, his complex emotions went unnoticed by others. Ye Xiaohan merely felt that his departure meant less trouble for her, and she thought he would likely return soon.
Luo Jingxian ordered the servants to quickly close the main door.
Calculating the time, Gu Bei would arrive in just a little while, and Ye Xiaohan busied herself preparing his room. Although the newly purchased house lacked nothing and had plenty of servants, resembling a proper wealthy merchant's residence, Ye Xiaohan still preferred to manage things herself. Once Gu Bei arrived, this place would no longer be just a house; it would become a home.
Humming an off-key tune, Ye Xiaohan felt that this moment was the happiest she had been since moving south.
Of course, there would be even happier times ahead when the family was reunited, and everything would gradually improve.
After finishing her tasks, she stepped aside to admire her work but was startled when she turned around.
"Third Prince, why are you standing here?" Ye Xiaohan took a step back, looking displeased at Murong Jing. The smell of alcohol emanating from him made her want to hold her breath.
Murong Jing seemed to have drunk excessively from somewhere and stood there unsteadily.
"You’re drunk. I’ll have someone take you home," Ye Xiaohan said as she turned to call for help but was abruptly pulled back by Murong Jing.
Ye Xiaohan regained her composure and frowned at Murong Jing. "Third Prince, what do you mean by this?"
Murong Jing did not respond or make any move; he simply stared at her with unwavering eyes, not blinking at all.
"Let go! Don't go too far!" Ye Xiaohan struggled fiercely, but Murong Jing held on tightly, making it impossible for her to break free.
Murong Jing stared at her furious face for a moment, then blinked and looked around. "This is where General Gu is supposed to stay?"
Ye Xiaohan's room was not here; the decor leaned more towards masculine, unlike a woman's boudoir.
"Yes, he'll stay here when he arrives," Ye Xiaohan admitted directly. In front of an opponent like Murong Jing, openly showing affection would likely be overlooked; hiding it would only suggest there was something to take advantage of.
Murong Jing surveyed the room. It wasn't as luxurious as the palaces he had stayed in; it was just an ordinary room without any decent furnishings. There were many such rooms, yet this one made him feel a twinge of envy.
"Why are you so good to him?" Murong Jing genuinely couldn't understand. Gu Bei was indeed a good person, but wasn't he, Murong Jing, even more outstanding? Why did Ye Xiaohan have eyes only for Gu Bei and dismiss his affections?
Ye Xiaohan looked at the drunkard before her and wondered if he even knew where he was or what he was doing. After sobering up, he probably wouldn't remember any of this.
Yet she answered the question seriously: "Because he treats me better."
Long ago, when Ye Xiaohan still considered Gu Bei an enemy, he had been very gentle with her, and later on, he devoted himself entirely to her.
They had gone through so much together; their bond was not something that could be easily broken by anyone.
Murong Jing stood there in a daze, unsure if it was the alcohol clouding his mind or if he was taken aback by Ye Xiaohan's response.
However, it seemed like there wasn't anything particularly frightening about what he had said. Ye Xiaohan pushed Murong Jing in confusion, trying to break free from his hold.
Her resistance brought Murong Jing back to reality, though he still felt somewhat muddled. He only knew that Ye Xiaohan wanted to escape from him. Where would she go? Right! She was going to find Gu Bei!
He had originally thought that despite his deep scheming, he was proud enough to disdain such despicable acts. He had overestimated him!
Ye Xiaohan's struggles only deepened Murong Jing's anger. He grabbed Ye Xiaohan's hands with one hand and pressed them against her head, while using the other hand to hold her body down. He bent one knee to press against Ye Xiaohan's leg, rendering her completely immobile.
"I've had enough; don't provoke me," Murong Jing said slowly, pulling a smile that sent a chill down Ye Xiaohan's spine.
A dangerous aura exploded around them in an instant. Yet, no matter how hard Ye Xiaohan fought, she couldn't break free and ended up exhausting most of her strength.
Murong Jing watched Ye Xiaohan struggle with amusement, his smile deepening while his gaze grew increasingly cold.
"Why can't it be me? What makes him better than me?" He leaned down slowly, inhaling the faint floral scent from Ye Xiaohan's hair, the fragrance of the shampoo she had mixed herself.
This woman was clearly special, more outstanding than any he had ever encountered. Shouldn't such a woman be matched with an even more exceptional man?
No matter how capable Gu Bei was, he was just a general who knew how to fight—he couldn't sweet-talk or make a woman happy, and he wasn't as handsome as Murong Jing. Furthermore, in terms of status, even if he was temporarily down on his luck, he was still far more noble than Gu Bei.
After comparing many conditions, Murong Jing never considered that sometimes love isn't based on external factors at all.
There was simply no reasoning behind it.
