"Letter from the Sixth Prince!"
Ye Xiaohan shook the letter in her hand, pretending to be mysterious. "Guess who this is for?"
Six Seven raised his hand high and exclaimed, "It's for me! It must be a letter from my brother to me! He likes me the most!"
"Well, that makes sense." Ye Xiaohan nodded and then turned to ask nearby, "Any other opinions? Six Yang, don't you think it should be for you? Didn't he not write to you last time?"
Six Yang glanced at the excited Six Seven and proudly said, "A gentleman's friendship is as light as water; what does it matter how many letters we exchange? What's important is the feelings behind the communication!"
"Oh? Is that so?" Ye Xiaohan shot him a glance and handed the letter to Six Seven. "You guessed right; it is for you."
Six Seven jumped up happily and took the letter. "I knew I was more important to my brother than Second Brother!"
"Hmph! Don't get too smug!" Six Yang pretended not to care, but he was actually quite jealous of the bond between Six Seven and Murong Xi. He couldn't tell if he was more jealous because his sister was taken away by a friend or if he was jealous that his friend was taken away by his sister.
However, not being able to distinguish between these feelings did not stop Six Yang from teasing Six Seven. "You can barely recognize a few characters; do you think you can understand it? Beg me, and I'll read it for you!"
"I won't!" Six Seven hugged the letter and hid behind Ye Xiaohan. "I can read; I can understand it myself, no need for you!" Even if she couldn't read it, she could always ask her sister-in-law, Sister Luo, Brother Luo, or Princess Sister. She didn't need this fake kindness from Second Brother.
She hadn't forgotten that because Murong Xi wrote her more letters than Second Brother did, Second Brother had tricked her into thinking the content was completely different from what was written.
Ye Xiaohan laughed heartily on the side. "This is what you get for always bullying her; now she even looks down on you. Six Yang, you're just like the boy who cried wolf, haha."
"Hmph! I won't stoop to your level!" To show he wasn't bothered at all, Six Yang started reading a book without glancing sideways.
Six Seven made a funny face at him, sat down, and began to read the letter.
The content was nothing out of the ordinary; it was written simply so that even Six Seven, who didn't know many characters, could understand it. There were even illustrations throughout to explain things clearly.
After finishing the letter, Six Seven frowned and handed it to the peeking Six Yang. "Brother seems unhappy. Second Brother, isn't life in the palace fun?"
Ye Yang took the letter, glanced through it briefly, and sighed, "It's quite big. As for whether it's fun or not, only the person involved would know. Some people enjoy the royal power within the palace, and they find it entertaining. Those who dislike it but have to stay inside won't find it enjoyable."
Li Qi listened intently, her face showing confusion. "I don't understand."
"If you don't understand, then you don't. It's not a big deal; we won't have anything to do with the royal family anyway." Ye Yang shoved the letter back into Li Qi's hands and playfully ruffled her hair. After she hit him on the head in protest, he patiently re-tied her hair.
Ye Xiaohan watched the playful antics, finding them rather childish. Although Ye Yang usually took care of Li Qi and styled her hair, he still enjoyed teasing her from time to time, which made him happy even if it upset her.
Even if it took extra time to redo her hairstyle, it didn't seem so boring anymore.
"Qi, let Ye Yang give you a nicer style. Gu Bei is coming later; we'll take you out to have some fun!" Ye Xiaohan was actually looking forward to it as well; it had been a while since they had all seen each other.
Li Qi loved going out, especially with Ye Xiaohan and Gu Bei accompanying her this time. She readily agreed.
Ye Yang had to go to a restaurant and didn't join them.
The three of them walked down the street together like a real family, close and intimate.
"Sister-in-law, candied hawthorn!" Li Qi exclaimed as she spotted the vibrant colors that caught her attention.
Ye Xiaohan pulled out some money while saying, "You can only eat half; we'll take the rest home for later. Otherwise, you'll get a toothache."
"Okay! I got it!" Li Qi looked up at the giant candied hawthorn stick in her eyes, blinked, and opened her arms toward Gu Bei. "Big brother, pick me up! I want to choose one myself—the biggest and reddest one!"
Gu Bei smiled and bent down to lift Li Qi up so that her eyes were level with the candied hawthorn for easier selection.
After carefully examining them all, Li Qi finally picked a string that she thought was the biggest and reddest one, biting into it with satisfaction.
"Greedy guts!" Ye Xiaohan laughed as she scolded, wrapping her handkerchief around the stick of the candied hawthorn to prevent the sticky sugar from getting all over her hands.
The three of them walked while eating, quickly moving away, unaware that their scene was being watched by others nearby.
Not far behind them stood Gu Rong, his expression dark and his eyes burning with anger.
He had just returned from the Crown Prince Murong Cheng and was in a foul mood.
Murong Cheng had been experiencing a series of misfortunes lately; his proposal for marriage had been rejected, and he had been beaten to a pulp by Luo Jingxian, leaving his face still swollen and red.
The Emperor was increasingly indifferent towards him, often treating him dismissively. Several times, in front of the other ministers, he had scolded and reprimanded him!
Murong Cheng did not reflect on his own shortcomings; he believed it was all due to the Emperor's favoritism.
Lacking the courage to confront the Emperor directly, he vented all his frustrations on Gu Rong instead.
"If only you had Gu Bei's abilities, we wouldn't have fallen into such a predicament!" Murong Cheng felt that Gu Rong's ineptitude was the reason for their continued setbacks.
If Gu Rong were stronger than Gu Bei, then what role would Gu Bei have in the court?
Faced with Murong Cheng's accusations, Gu Rong's resentment towards Gu Bei deepened even further. It was always about Gu Bei; he felt like a massive obstacle blocking Gu Rong's path, preventing him from being recognized by the world!
Emerging from the Crown Prince's Residence filled with anger, he unexpectedly saw Gu Bei and his companions pass right in front of him.
That intimate scene stung Gu Rong's eyes. Why was Gu Bei so much luckier than him? He only had Liu Susu at home, who was a constant source of annoyance and even required effort to deal with after death, while Gu Bei could enjoy the joys of family life!
Though both lacked parental support, Gu Bei managed to build another family that cared for and loved him!
Gu Rong gritted his teeth, barely suppressing the urge to rush forward and stab Gu Bei.
He kept staring intently in the direction where Gu Bei had left, and after a long while, he finally turned to leave.
However, he did not go home; instead, he returned to the Crown Prince's Residence once more.
He had come up with a way to deal with Gu Bei.
"Oh? Are you sure this plan will work?" Murong Cheng asked skeptically. Gu Rong had failed too many times, and now he was hesitant about any ideas proposed by Gu Rong.
Gu Rong was determined. "Rest assured, Your Highness, this time it will definitely succeed! It's much easier to deal with a girl than an adult. Gu Bei treats Liu Qi like his own sister; as long as we use her as leverage, Gu Bei will have no choice but to listen to Your Highness!"
This was Gu Rong's idea: to capture Liu Qi and use her to threaten Gu Bei, forcing him to switch sides and join Murong Cheng's camp.
Of course, this was not Gu Rong's true desire; in his heart, he wished nothing more than for Gu Bei to die right before him.
However, Murong Cheng's thoughts differed slightly from Gu Rong's. He preferred to win over Gu Bei and gain a powerful ally. Only as a last resort would he consider destroying this formidable weapon.
Indeed, the general who held half of Dongchuan's military power was like a sharp spear capable of taking countless lives!
To avoid offending Murong Cheng, Gu Rong had no choice but to comply for now. As long as it could bring harm to Gu Bei, even if it was just a little bit, he would find it satisfactory.
Murong Cheng was convinced; he had no better ideas. Gu Bei was impervious to both threats and persuasion; no matter what he did, Gu Bei steadfastly refused.
Although Gu Rong's idea was not the best in his mind, at least among the current options, it sounded the most feasible.
