Liu Susu felt as if she had been ignited like a firecracker upon hearing Gu Rong's sarcastic remarks.
"Who do you think you are?" Liu Susu retorted angrily. "Gu Rong, you cried and begged to marry me just to secure the support of the Liu Family. Now that I've been framed and my appearance ruined, you take pleasure in my misfortune?"
Gu Rong sneered, "Are you really framed, or did you bring this humiliation upon yourself? You know the truth, Liu Susu! Stop constantly mentioning the Liu Family; I've tolerated you for long enough!"
He unconsciously raised his voice. "Now you're just a laughingstock all over the capital! How dare you embarrass me at a time like this! Have you gone running back to Gu Bei again?"
Liu Susu was taken aback and instinctively denied it. "Don't be ridiculous! When did I ever go to him?"
She had gone to the General's Mansion with the intention of stirring trouble but ended up being driven away by Gu Bei and Ye Xiaohan working together. There was no way she would admit to such an embarrassing incident.
"Do you think that if you deny it, no one will know?" Gu Rong's eyes were filled with cold malice. "Someone saw you enter the General's Mansion, and someone else saw you leave. Liu Susu, are you still deluding yourself? Look in the mirror; with that ghastly face of yours, do you really think Gu Bei would want to look at you again?"
Gu Rong's words dripped with venom. He hated Gu Bei for always being in his way, no matter how much he tried to undermine him. He loathed the Liu Family for choosing to support an outsider like Gu Bei instead of their own son-in-law, treating him as if he were not one of their own.
But most of all, he despised the woman standing before him, neither human nor ghost! When Gu Bei went missing, he was overjoyed, thinking his luck had finally turned. To seize everything that belonged to Gu Bei, he even married this woman, who was supposed to be Gu Bei's fiancée but whom he did not care for.
Yet now, Gu Bei had returned and was more favored than ever. And this woman, under the guise of being Gu Rong's wife, was entangled in ambiguous relations with Gu Bei!
The thought of Liu Susu and Gu Bei sneaking around together and mocking him behind his back ignited a surge of rage within Gu Rong.
"Bitch, are you still thinking about Gu Bei?" Gu Rong snarled at Liu Susu, his face contorted with fury.
In reality, there was nothing between Liu Susu and Gu Bei; all that existed was Gu Bei's desire for revenge against her for the malicious deeds she had done to Ye Xiaohan whenever he saw her.
Even if there were some entanglements between them, Liu Susu could never admit it in front of Gu Rong, after all, he was her nominal husband.
"I don't know what you're talking about!" Liu Susu quickly suppressed her guilt deep within herself and defiantly shouted at Gu Rong, "You hear some rumors outside and come home to blame me? Are you even a man? Picking on your own woman at home!"
Unfortunately, no matter how righteous she appeared, the truth remained the truth. Gu Rong was not foolish; he could discern these matters.
Moreover, Gu Rong had always disliked Liu Susu, so he naturally only cared about the bad things he heard and paid no attention to her merits.
From the beginning, Liu Susu had not lived comfortably in this household with Gu Rong. He did not like her, and the maids below would inevitably gossip behind her back.
It was just that before, Gu Rong's attitude had not been so overt; now, he openly expressed his disdain for her and even instructed the servants to make things difficult for her in secret.
The more difficult Liu Susu's life became in the Gu Family, the worse things got for her recently when the emperor personally investigated a poisoning incident that made her a laughingstock throughout the capital. At such a time, if anything else happened, it would no longer be possible to cover it up as before; instead, people would be watching her every move and embellishing their tales.
Even with the Liu Family, she could no longer come and go as she pleased but had to adhere to the duties of a wife and behave cautiously in the Gu Family.
"That scoundrel Gu Rong!" Liu Susu twisted the handkerchief in her hand as if it were Gu Rong's head. "He really has some nerve to treat me this way! What has he achieved today if not thanks to my Liu Family's support? Without that, with his little ability, would he even have a say in court?"
The maid quickly glanced around nervously, fearing that the ever-watchful servants of the Gu Family might overhear. She urged softly, "Miss, this is something I overheard from outside. You should be more cautious; if Son-in-law hears this, he'll come looking for you to argue again!"
"If he wants to argue, let him! Am I supposed to be afraid of him?" Liu Susu glared defiantly. "What is Gu Rong? He lacks both talent and skill; all he knows is how to flatter and ingratiate himself! And he always thinks he can compete with Gu Bei? What a joke! With someone like him, how can he even be compared to Gu Bei?"
The maid was frightened and quickly lowered her voice to comfort her, feeling anxious inside.
However, Liu Susu completely ignored the maid's advice. "One Gu family member is enough to bring glory to the family. Now with an additional Gu Rong, it's simply embarrassing the Gu family!"
"Say that again!"
Before Liu Susu could finish her sentence, a furious shout echoed as Gu Rong stormed into the room.
Gu Rong had heard every word of Liu Susu's earlier remarks.
Liu Susu had always looked down on the household servants, punishing them with beatings or scoldings for even the slightest mistake. Sometimes, she would vent her frustrations on them simply because she was in a bad mood, which naturally made her unpopular.
So after the confrontation between Liu Susu and Gu Rong, Gu Rong discreetly instructed the servants to make things difficult for Liu Susu, and no one felt sympathy for her.
After learning about the situation earlier, Liu Susu had raged against Gu Rong in her room, and soon enough, a servant informed Gu Rong of her tirade. When Gu Rong arrived, she overheard Liu Susu praising Gu Bei while belittling her.
"Bitch!" In a fit of rage, Gu Rong slapped Liu Susu across the face as soon as she entered. "Do you even know what shame is? Praising another man in front of your own husband? You should take this outside so everyone can see what kind of people the Liu family really are!"
Liu Susu was genuinely startled when she saw Gu Rong enter. In truth, she had long since lost any lingering affection for Gu Bei; now he was allied with Ye Xiaohan and both were enemies of Liu Susu!
Her motivation for speaking ill of Gu Rong was merely to vent her own frustrations.
But in front of Gu Rong, how could she admit defeat? To her, Gu Rong was nothing but a despicable person. She hated Gu Bei and felt the same disdain for Gu Rong.
Moreover, how dare Gu Rong hit her! Liu Susu covered her face in disbelief.
"Do you still dare to mention the Liu Family?" Liu Susu shouted angrily. "If it weren't for me, the Liu Family, would you be able to do so well? You don't know how to be grateful, and instead you repay kindness with malice! What can I do about it? You Gu Rong are indeed no match for Gu Bei! This isn't just my opinion; everyone in the capital thinks the same!"
This was indeed the truth, and because it was true, it made Gu Rong even more furious.
"What if Gu Bei is so great?" Gu Rong retorted sarcastically. "Don't forget, you were the one who broke off the engagement. Now Gu Bei has another woman by his side, a pure and beautiful lady. Do you really think he would look at someone as ugly as you, someone who could scare even ghosts away?"
The appearance of Ye Xiaohan and the destruction of her own beauty were the two most painful things in Liu Susu's life. Yet Gu Rong showed no mercy, his words cutting into Liu Susu like a knife, each word drawing blood.
"You scoundrel! How dare you say that to me!" Liu Susu erupted in fury, rushing at Gu Rong to fight him. "You should die, along with those bitches!"
Gu Rong did not expect Liu Susu to make a move. Caught off guard, he was pushed hard by her and crashed into a nearby candlestick, a sharp pain spreading through his waist.
The pain intensified his anger. Gu Rong grabbed Liu Susu as she charged at him again and forcefully threw her aside. "What a fine daughter of the Prime Minister's Residence! Not only are you sneaking around with other men, but you also dare to hit your own husband! Truly excellent upbringing!"
Hearing Gu Rong speak ill of the Liu Family only fueled Liu Susu's rage further; she just wanted to tear this villain apart.
As they struggled, Liu Susu grabbed a white jade floral ornament and hurled it at Gu Rong. However, Gu Rong dodged the attack with a swift movement and countered by grabbing Liu Susu's long hair, repeatedly slamming her against the wall.
Liu Susu fought desperately but could not break free.
"Bitch, if you beg for mercy now, I might consider letting you off!" Gu Rong was tired of hearing comparisons between him and Gu Bei from others behind his back.
