Gu Bei brought along elite subordinates, including strategist Shen Ru and several capable generals. The soldiers rallied together after Gu Bei's disappearance and managed to fend off all enemy assaults quite impressively.
However, even so, the army suffered heavy losses. After several raids by the bandits, they had lost one-third of their forces.
Gu Bei pressed down on the scroll with some force; one-third of the troops written on paper was merely a number. Yet each figure represented a living person.
The atmosphere in the military tent was somewhat oppressive as everyone felt a pang of sorrow. Brothers who had once shared daily life were now buried in the earth; such feelings were not something everyone could bear calmly.
"Since the Bandits have discovered our camp, why not retreat and find another location?" Gu Bei asked, furrowing his brow.
It was well known that the Bandits were incredibly formidable. Now that they had found this place, they would not easily give up. Staying here would only expose them to danger.
Shen Ru stepped forward and reported, "It was my insistence that we did not relocate. Therefore, I ask for your punishment regarding the losses incurred."
"This cannot be blamed on the strategist!" someone quickly explained. "The strategist was only waiting for you, General. He feared that if we retreated, you would not be able to find us, which is why he suggested we stay put!"
The remaining Soldiers all chimed in, "Yes, General! This matter cannot be blamed on the strategist! Moreover, it was merely a suggestion; all of us Soldiers agreed to remain here until you returned!"
Gu Bei glanced at Shen Ru, whose expression was resolute. He was unafraid of facing punishment as long as Gu Bei could return safely.
Shen Ru firmly believed that Gu Bei would not easily fall to a few Bandits; he would surely find a way to escape. Thus, he steadfastly held his ground, waiting for Gu Bei's return.
"Forget it for now; let's discuss the pressing matters ahead," Gu Bei said, waving his hand. He felt it was more important to eliminate the threat of the Bandits before addressing other issues.
While Gu Bei and the Soldiers were discussing important matters, Ye Xiaohan wandered around the camp.
It wasn't exactly leisurely wandering; she was busy despite her appearance. In reality, Ye Xiaohan had a lot on her plate.
After several surprise attacks by the Bandits, the Army had suffered heavy casualties, and injured Soldiers were everywhere in the camp.
Moreover, medicine was a significant issue. Although they had brought a considerable amount this time, it was insufficient given the number of injured Soldiers. More importantly, no one could determine when this situation would end.
With limited supplies of medicine and considering future circumstances, they needed to conserve as much as possible and minimize each person's share.
As a result, many Soldiers could only receive basic treatment rather than comprehensive care.
Faced with such circumstances, Ye Xiaohan felt it was highly inappropriate. After receiving approval from Gu Bei, she took several Military Doctors from the camp to search for usable herbs nearby.
The medicine brought in was treated as a reserve, and they first used the herbs that were available. This way, they could alleviate the potential crisis of insufficient medicine in the future while ensuring that the injured Soldiers received adequate treatment.
After Ye Xiaohan demonstrated her skills, several Military Doctors immediately recognized her abilities and held her in high regard. Especially in the field of surgery, they regarded her almost as a deity.
In battles between the two armies, external injuries were the most common, and the number of injured soldiers was immense. Ye Xiaohan spent nearly all her time in the wards, hardly having any time to rest.
It was only after a few other Military Doctors noticed that Ye Xiaohan had not fully recovered that they urged her to take a break. However, she quickly resumed helping again.
In this brief interaction, Ye Xiaohan clearly sensed that this Army had an extremely rigorous style and a strong sense of trust among its members.
Even in their current defeated state, none of the Soldiers complained; as long as they could get back on their feet, they remained steadfast at their posts.
Watching the Soldiers wrapped in layers of bandages and donned in Armor, Ye Xiaohan felt deeply moved.
No wonder Gu Bei had always been victorious; with such a disciplined army, if they still could not achieve results, how would the rest cope?

"Shen Strategist," Ye Xiaohan greeted him. "Do you need something from me?"
Shen Ru smiled and replied, "Not just me; it's all of us. I'm here as a representative."
"Oh?" Ye Xiaohan said, somewhat puzzled. "Is there something I can do? Is it to treat the injured?"
For someone like her, who didn't understand warfare, the field of medicine was where she could truly make a difference.
Shen Ru replied, "Indeed, I would like to ask you to see the patients, but it's not that simple."
He sighed and continued, "You've seen the condition of these generals. They were already severely injured, and now with their reckless behavior, I'm afraid they won't last much longer."
"That's true." Ye Xiaohan felt a deep sense of worry about this matter. "I've been trying to persuade him every day, but he doesn't listen. There's nothing more I can do."
Shen Ru smiled bitterly. "The general has always been like this; he prioritizes the greater good above all else, completely disregarding his own health. As long as he can still breathe, he will keep pushing himself."
Dealing with someone like this left others feeling helpless.
Shen Ru said, "I hope you can persuade the general again and urge him to take care of himself. He is our leader; if he's not around, we will end up like we did before—scattered and disorganized."
"That's a good point," Ye Xiaohan replied. "Just my persuasion alone won't work; he's completely focused on strategizing right now. However, we might try approaching it from the perspective of the soldiers. It could yield different results."
Shen Ru pondered for a moment and said, "I think that method is feasible. The general has always valued the soldiers highly. If we can find a reasonable argument from that angle, I believe he will consider it seriously."
"How about we start with the fact that too many soldiers are injured and need to rest temporarily to regain their best condition? Then we can launch a decisive attack; it would definitely be more effective than dragging along a bunch of wounded."
