Ye Xiaohan suddenly extinguished the torch, startling Liu Yang beside her, who thought something was wrong and hurriedly asked, "What happened? What's going on?"
"Shh, don't make a sound." Ye Xiaohan pointed at the blue brick illuminated by the moonlight and said, "Look, at this time yesterday, it was also this brick that was lit up. Based on this timing, could it be that the strange noises started when the moonlight hit this blue brick?"
Liu Yang stroked his chin in contemplation. "It's not certain, but it is quite a coincidence."
"Exactly," Ye Xiaohan reminded him. "Do you remember that when we changed rooms this time, there were no strange noises?"
She continued, "It just happened to rain, and the following two nights were cloudy."
Liu Yang recalled and nodded. "Oh, could it be that the strange noises are related to the moon? Only when the moonlight shines here do we hear them?"
Ye Xiaohan nodded. "I think there must be some connection; otherwise, it's too coincidental."
She crouched down and began to feel around the blue brick. They had checked this spot twice before and found nothing—where could the problem be?
The piercing screams continued to echo in their ears. Ye Xiaohan leaned down and pressed her ear against the blue brick to listen for the source of the sound.
Suddenly, as she moved to the left side of the brick, the noise grew significantly louder.
"Here!"
Ye Xiaohan stood up, grabbed a handy tool, and inserted it into the gap between the blue bricks.
As she worked, the gap widened. Now Liu Yang didn’t need to crouch down; he could hear the strange sounds coming from within.
"Underground?" Liu Yang asked in confusion. "It doesn’t seem like there’s any emptiness beneath this blue brick. How could there be a sound?"
Ye Xiaohan relit her torch and said, "It’s possible that this blue brick was intentionally placed here. If this brick is much thicker than the others, even if there’s space underneath it, you wouldn’t easily discern any sounds from outside."
Regardless of the situation, since they had discovered something, they couldn't just ignore it.
The two of them took a hoe and a shovel, prying around the blue brick to loosen it before working together to gradually shift it aside.
After creating a small gap, they were astonished to find that there was another layer of wooden planks below.
Once the planks were lifted, a hole about half a person's height was revealed. Ye Xiaohan illuminated it with a torch, and inside was a narrow passage from which the strange sounds emanated.
"Sister-in-law, I'll go down first." Liu Yang was quick on his feet and jumped down ahead. The space was too cramped for the torch, so he used a fire stick instead.
The passage wasn't long; after just a few steps, it sloped downward. Liu Yang slid down the gentle slope, and in the dim light of the fire stick, he saw a mass writhing and struggling, with screams that seemed to echo right beside him.
Not far in front of "it," a thin beam of moonlight shone into this dark Black Room.
Liu Yang threw the fire stick toward the writhing mass, which landed nearby, allowing him to barely make out the situation there.
"Sister-in-law!" Liu Yang called out in surprise from the passage, "Hurry down! It looks like there's someone in here!"
When Ye Xiaohan descended, she finally understood what Liu Yang meant by "looks like."
The object before them had a human shape, but its limbs were twisted and it was convulsing continuously. Its head was elongated and tangled with its body on the ground, making it hard to distinguish its front from its back.
"Sister-in-law, this is a person, right?" Liu Yang shrank back slightly, almost retreating behind Ye Xiaohan. Fortunately, his determination to protect her kept him from backing away any further.
Ye Xiaohan pulled out all the fire sticks she had in her arms; both of them held them tightly, illuminating the area significantly.
"You keep the light steady; I'll go take a look." Ye Xiaohan held one fire stick in one hand and a powerful Sedative in the other. No matter what this being was—even if it were a mutated elephant—it wouldn't be able to withstand the effects of this Sedative for more than ten minutes.
As she approached closer, Ye Xiaohan realized that this was indeed a normal woman. The reason she appeared to be acting strangely was that she was bound by chains.
Her movements were restricted, and coupled with her exhaustion, her screams were likely instinctive reactions born from madness. It resembled how some mentally ill patients exhibit greater strength than ordinary people because they cannot control their instincts.
A person's subconscious will avoid dangerous behaviors when they perceive harm. For instance, under normal circumstances, one would not deliberately drag a knife across their skin knowing it could cut them.
However, when someone is driven to madness, they often lose rational self-control and break through their body's protective instincts, entering a state where they might harm others while also inflicting damage upon themselves.
Ye Xiaohan observed the Black Room, finding it devoid of anything else. For all this time, this person had not eaten at all.
In such circumstances, merely surviving was a stroke of luck; she was now exhausting her own life force. By nightfall, even a deity would be unable to save her.
As she moved closer, Ye Xiaohan reached out to probe.
The moment her hand touched the person, they reacted like a startled beast, suddenly thrashing violently. Their head whipped around to face Ye Xiaohan, and they opened their mouth to bite.
Ye Xiaohan was prepared; as the person lunged at her, she quickly stepped back and evaded the attack.
Missing its target, the person seemed to be greatly agitated, shaking their head wildly and screaming at Ye Xiaohan.
In that brief moment, Ye Xiaohan caught a glimpse of the person's face.
To her astonishment, this seemingly deranged woman was an extraordinarily beautiful lady.
Even in the dim light of the fire, disheveled and contorted from spasms, one could still see glimpses of her immense beauty in the corners of her eyes and brows.
Ye Xiaohan was puzzled as to why such a person would be found in this Black Room.
Was there someone hidden in the house? Did the owner of the house not know?
"Sister-in-law, are you okay?" A voice called out from beside her. It was Liu Yang, who had been startled by Ye Xiaohan's attack and rushed over to check on her condition.
Ye Xiaohan snapped back to reality; now was not the time for such thoughts. She needed to rescue the person first and could ask questions later.
"I'm fine; just step back," Ye Xiaohan said as she covered her mouth and nose, holding her breath. She sprinkled the sedative she had in hand towards the stunning woman. After a moment, the woman gradually ceased her screaming and collapsed onto the ground.
Once some time had passed for the sedative to take effect, Ye Xiaohan cautiously approached to examine her.
The beauty was not only bound by chains but also had an iron chain locked around her ankle, with the other end secured to a large stone in the corner.
From this, it was clear that the person who locked the beauty in the Black Room was determined to take her life. In a situation where food and water were cut off, her movements were severely restricted.
Ye Xiaohan dragged the unconscious beauty over, and together with Yang, they managed to lift her up.
Once they reached the study, illuminated by the flickering torchlight, they discovered that this beauty was merely seventeen or eighteen years old, at the prime of her youth. Despite the inhumane treatment she had endured over the past few days, which left her pale and with cracked lips, she still possessed a captivating charm.
However, her lip color was quite strange—deep purple, almost black—indicating that she had been poisoned.
Ye Xiaohan examined her thoroughly and confirmed that she had indeed been poisoned. This toxin appeared to be a type of Neurotoxin; it wouldn't claim her life in the short term but was far more insidious.
Those affected by this kind of poison would have the toxins rapidly spread throughout their bodies. At a certain point, when physical activity reached a certain level, the toxicity would be triggered.
The specific manifestation of this would be a state of madness, where the person would be acutely aware of their disorientation while experiencing full-body convulsions.
The cries and moans they heard were her unconscious screams during the height of her toxicity.
Additionally, after Ye Xiaohan unfastened her clothing, he found that the beauty's body was nearly covered in scars. Every inch of her jade-like skin bore various marks of injury.
Some of these were even burn wounds.
What was chilling was that these scars had been treated with some kind of powder. Ye Xiaohan took a whiff and recognized it as ordinary Healing Ointment.
It seemed that the person who had imprisoned her feared she might die too quickly to endure further torment; hence, they deliberately applied medicine to prolong her suffering.
